Gut Reactions: 2013 Week 11

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers' loss to the New York Giants.

  • That was tough to watch.
  • As bad as this one felt, the Packers are a game out of first place and play the Vikings next week. They just need to get a win. Any win.
  • McCarthy was crazy conservative early. I get not wanting to put too much on Tolzien right out of the gate, but this "Run, run, Hope  Jordy Bails Us Out" playsheet needs to be burned.
  • Tramon Williams played a hell of a game.
  • Marshall Newhouse did not.
  • Capers, who blitzed the hell out of Joe Flacco, sat back and let Eli Manning get comfortable. I just don't get it.
  • I hate that McCarthy basically gave up that last time he trotted out the punt team.
  • How many games has that quick hitter into the flat cost the Packers a game this season? At least twice. I mean, I get that it was an incredibly athletic play by JPP on the INT, but Tolzien was having success throwing downfield. The defense had just authored it's first 3 and out and the Packers were down by a TD. Go for it. Rip it, man. Go downfield. McCarthy has gone to that flat throw as a staple of his offense and opponents know it. Hell, even a traditional slant would be fine.
  • All that said, I was glad to finally see a few screen plays called.
  • On the flip side, Kevin Gilbride just owns Capers.
  • And I'm not sure Sam Shields would have helped.
  • I really hope Don Barclay is back next week.
  • Like I said above, the Packers need a win. Just a win. The Vikings are coming to town with God Knows Who at quarterback. Get that W, and hope Aaron is back for the Thanksgiving game against the Lions.
  • Lotta season left.
  • Go Pack Go.

Mike said he wasn't sure if Sherrod is ready, because practice isn't the same as games.

So, why didn't we get some film on him today?

Maybe he's not looking good in practice.

If we can't beat the Queens, stick a fork in us. Strike team football at it's worst.

I am just really disappointed in this game. Agreed on the offensive strategy. If they're putting 8-9 in the box, throw it over their heads, don't pound Lacy into the pile.

Fluke plays have followed this team for years. Remember last week with Burnett and Williams "Keystone Kopped" themselves out of an INT, which became a TD the other way?

Dom showed he COULD get it done. After the half they were getting to the QB on three drives. Nothing else for the rest of the day.

Kuhn? You're swinging a screen out to KUHN? He's not fast enough to get two yards without the D converging on him.

I really feel as if Mike had NO CONTINGENCY whatsoever for losing Aaron. I like what I see in Tolzien, though.

Man this defense is abysmal. What injury accounts for this? Losing Nick Perry? Shields was out today, but in the last two weeks. UGLY.

Yeah, and he cut it inside when Sitton had the edge sealed and an easy td to the outside.

Agree. It appears that the standard result, with one or two exceptions, is to darft a first round pick, they will be injured before their first year is complete, nurse them for about 18 months, come back for 2 games, reinjure or a new injury, rehab for another 18 -24 months and then let them go. Maybe we should sell our first round draft to other teams and draft only in the second and later rounds. They appear to be more durable in the long run. Little humor here?

The defense came out so slow. They really started looking better at the end which is a nice change.

The offense just looked flat until we through down field. That has to be our game without AR. Run just enough to keep the defense honest, and then throw down the seam.

What a tough game to watch. We were so spoiled with AR.

I for one am not giving up on this team. Maybe the Packers let up a little when they found out Detroit lost who knows.

One person I loved was Scott Tolzein and his will to win. If everyone tried as hard as he did and played with his passion we would have destroyed them today. Sure he had a few Brett Favre type passes but for the most part this kid belongs.

I have no doubt now that MM knows he f'd up and should have went aggressive right away. He'll do it next week and Green Bay will win.

I didn't like his over aggressiveness there and his lack of aggressiveness early in the game.

This team has been absolutely abysmal since Rodgers went down. McCarthy and Capers getting tooled the last 3 weeks and especially McCarthy who still has the deer in the headlights look.

We all hoped for a 2-2 before Rodgers possibly coming back. That is out the window and they should just keep Rodgers on the bench. No need to rush him back for a lost season.

This team is done. No fight in those guys. The DBs are terrible. While Tolzien has a competitive spirit, he simply isn't good enough to play in the NFL. Newhouse is, well, overmatched. If #12 is not the NFL MVP then I don't know. Without him, this team is toast. Imagine a regular season without him, and you are looking at a 0-16 team.
Next week even the Vikings will roll into Lambeau and come out with a 2 TD win margin.

One thing I would like to know is why our DBs seemingly have no idea who should cover whom, whether there is safety help, and what is going on in general. I've counted at least 7 situations when a Ginats WR just ran down the field, caught the ball, and after the tackle one could see 3 or 4 Packers somewhere lost on the field, not covering anybody. I think once even Johnston noticed it...

Flynn will be the backup next season. If Tolzien struggles next week he will become the starter until Rodgers is ready. Flynn has a stronger arm and has proven himself to be able to beat playoff caliber teams - albeit 2 seasons ago (The Packers rallied around Flynn).

Tolzien has thrown five ints in two games! Reading some of these comments you would think he has played flawlessly but unable to come up with the wins. He is the reason they haven't won! Just b/c he connected on a few deep balls with 7,8, and 9 guys in the box doesn't mean he can play well enough to win!

Have you watched every punt formation this year? How do you know that either one of those players haven't been on that special teams unit?

Have you ever seen Franklin or Hyde in that ST unit? Simple fact is you have to call that play based on the situation, your not calling it based on who is going to handle the ball. Sure its better if you have an experienced ball handler in that unit, but you don't not make the call. Its a play call you make based on the situation, not the personnel. If you adjust the personnel you announce your intentions.

I have no clue if either has been on the field on those units. I have no clue what so ever. that's why I asked you.
I know they each play a lot of special teams. That's why I suggest those 2 players.

My biggest gripe was the play call. I didn't like it. The defense was playing well enough, and they could have put them inside the 10 there. I thought the distance to the first down, was to much in that moment.

Then to top it off I didn't like that the ball went into Jennings hands. I understand he is probably the primary person in that role, but I would have rather seen someone else get the ball...
I think they could have gotten away with bringing in Franklin or Hyde into that role without many knowing. Just my opinion.

It was a great play call that just didn't work. Again you don't adjust your personnel to run a fake in that situation. Given the situation and the need to make a play of some kind, whether on offense, D or ST, they needed to do something to try to create an advantage. It was a great call IMO, that just didn't happen to work. The fact it didn't QUITE work doesn't suddenly make it a bad call.

I don't like to question coaches play calling because if it works they look like geniuses but when it doesn't everyone is calling for their heads.
I just didn't like the call in this situation... That was my feeling before they called the play too...

and you think the other team always knows who is on what ST unit? come on man... with all the injuries during games and with injured players before games, the makeup of those teams fluctuates a big deal.
And by the way, MD Jennings in general is NOT a regular on this ST unit. Since he took over as starter at S he plays on KR, not PR. in this situation you'd need someone who is fighting for the extra yards, and no disrespect, but MD Jennings is not that guy. Again, I have no problem with the call, but I have a problem with the guy who got the ball.

Watched the end of the Niners - Saints game. The Packers D looks like it's playing at half speed compared to those teams, and with half the intensity. Let's be honest - whether it's scheme, the players, draft and develop - this is a poor defense. the speed of these defenses is just at a different level.
makes you realize how bad our D really is.

this season is what it is.

shut Rodgers down, develop Tolzien as your #2, tank the rest of the season, get as high of a draft pick as you can, heal up, and make a run at it next season.

By the way - that Beason guy sure looked pretty good. Crazy how he wasn't on the NYG roster at the beginning of the season. Some weird deal where the team saw they had a hole at a position so they did something called a (hope i get this right)... I think they called it a "trade".

Seems there's this really strange, unheard of rule in the NFL that says you can give away a draft pick (even a real late one) and get an actual player back in return.

But we have Hawk and Jones, so.......

The defense did not play well enough to aid in victory but they did improve from the last two weeks. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the offense. I think it is pretty clear that Aaron Rodgers makes McCarthy look good and not the other way around. Tolzien was able to push the ball vertical but instead of attacking the Giants with crossers or drive routes and no semblance of attacking in the air with the backs the offense was relegated to run, run, pass punt in the first half and most of the game. For all of the bluster to get rid of Capers don't forget to add McCarthy to that conversation. Good coaches help out their QBs. McCarthy has not been able to do that I seriously question if he ever will.

Perhaps the most important game is next week. We will learn a lot about how talented these subs really are. Hopefully shields can come back. But is Burnett really that good? Is House? Can Brad Jones get a sack, how about Datone Jones? How will Boykin do? Fire the strength and conditioning coach after this season, no question. Figure out what the lions and chiefs strength and conditioning coaches are doing, and follow that. And Ted, if your players can't take the field, then their value is reduced by the amount they are injured no matter how good they are, end of story. So pay attention to durability for god sakes. Get some men out there. You'll probably need to get some free agents that have proven themselves. Sorry but it's true, you're not a draft genius.

One game out -not looking good right now, but find a way to win against the Vikes, everyone use their turkey day wishbone wish on Rodgers being healthy and playing, and get to 11-5 or 10-6, sneak in with tiebreakers over lions and bears. This team just needs a spark to push them in the right direction, I truly believe we haven't seen their best football yet.

Seriously? The entire offense is built around Rodgers and his ability not only as a passer but also to make pre-snap adjustments. We all said before the season that if Rodgers is out the entire team will suffer. That includes the Defense... Having Rodgers at QB also changes the way the Defensive Coordinator calls plays.

It doesn't change the fact that the Packers are still as talented as almost any NFL team.

Packers would be 8-2 right now w/ Rodgers and we would be trying to figure out if we can get past Seattle or NO for a home field advantage/ 1st rd bye.

This isn't a new situation that most didn't see as a very strong possibility w/o Rodgers for an extended time.

When did I ever say Tolzien wouldn't play if Wallace couldn't do the job. YOUR WRONG!!!

Fact remains we all knew that w/o Rodgers this isn't a great team. Its the same w/ every team that has a franchise QB. Its becuz when you do have one you do everything to maximize his ability. That includes tailoring the plays to his ability and it also means the DC calls plays differently. To deny that is ridiculous.

i disagree. a talented team would win some even without their starting QB. there have been quite a few starting QBs out with injuries, and those teams won also. the last few weeks the Packers didn't play the best of the best in the NFL. Opponents they lost to were the Bears, the Eagles, and the Giants. Those teams are a combined 16-15, and take away the 3 wins those would be 13-15... this is the definition of average. a team as talented as almost anybody in the NFL would not go 0-3 against such teams. Just sayin'

packer pete chimes in with some truth! i went into yesterday's game thinking that it was going to be a shootout and that we had a good chance of winning. boy was i wrong! i was thinking that we could at least go 2-2 while rodgers was out. wrong again. it kills me to say this, but i think the craptastic viqueens have an excellent chance of coming into our house next week and getting a win. their game plan will be the same as the giants: stack the box, stop the run and make tolzien beat them. their defense can be as opportunistic as the giants D was yesterday.

and don't get me started about the thanksgiving day game against the lions. that game will be a battle to the end even with rodgers!

Aaron, I agree with your gut reactions. When I knew the game was over, I was pissed and just sulking in the loss... Then I went, cleared my head, and realized that they are 1 game behind the Lions and the Bears.

Anyone that thinks either team is going to run away with it, good luck...

Packers play each team yet this season.

Next time the know-it-all's drool over Teddy T's managerial prowess, keep this fiasco in mind. The powers to be had decided that Graham Harrell was a good enough backup even after watching him stink it up in training camp and 2 preseason games. It is completely unfair to put Tolzein in this situation and have his confidence shredded - the guy deserves better. A healthy Rodgers couldn't win against the Giants for multiple seasons now; Tolzein racked up 300+ yards against that defense in his first NFL start. I think we may have finally found a legitimate backup.

So Thompson realized the bad situation at backup QB and moved to fix it! Its not like Tolzien was available when training camp was in progress. As soon as he had the ability to make moves he dumped the backup QB's, cleaned house and picked up Tolzien and Wallace. That is recoginizing the problem and moving to do something about it! Hell its the F'in definition of doing what he needed to!

He drafted McMillan... Clearly they expected him to develop into a competent Safety by this point. He has the athletic ability, but hasn't become as good as they hoped. Its not like he didn't try. If McMillan is even decent, Jennings is on the bench where he belongs and this isn't an issue. So he missed on a 4th rd draft pick. Geez, I guess no other GM has ever done that before.

McMillan even spent the entire offseason in GB trying to ensure he would become the starter. Not like Rhodes or Huff is helping another team is it?! Or do you think you know more than Thompson and all the other GM's?

to paraphrase the late, great John McKay..
We cannot win at home. We cannot win on the road.
The problem is…. I don't know where else we can play.

I kid, I kid. Here is the thing: as bad as it has looked the last 2 weeks, we still pretty much control our own fate. Gotta win next week against Vikes, without AR12. That is gonna be tough.
Then, hope against hope for AR12 to be back for Turkey Day, and we gut out a win. At that point, we are 7-5, and in control of our own destiny, and with no one on remaining schedule that with AR12 that we will not be favored to beat. Granted, this would require D to play better than it has the last 3 weeks, but I think AR12 being in the game would help the D as well.
Of course, I am just a little biased here.

Nagler brought up a few things I wanted to touch on. Can't believe they didn't bring more pressure on Eli. When he gets time he's effective. But he doesn't want anything to do with a pass rush. Totally immobile unless there's no one in front of him(and I mean it has to be no one) Will go down like a sack of potatoes and curl up in a ball if he's getting pressured. Yet we let him stand back there and go over the middle all day long. Or maybe we just can't get a pass rush even going against a crappy o-line.

The other thing is, with six games to go and with a game a piece against the those other two teams, incredibly the Packers can still win this division. But only if Rodgers is back by the Lions game at the latest.

I saw them blitz 5 or even 6 on quite a few plays. They just didn't get home or real close for whatever reason. Not sure if its poor blitz design or what. My guess is that Capers is now situationally predictable, but that's hard to say w/o knowing the exact person blitzing each time. Everyone thinks that its soft zone, but you don't play zone behind a blitz. Then again if the blitz isn't getting close its hard to blame the DB's too.

offense can be cured either of two ways:

(1) let somebody else call the plays; or,
(2) bring back #12.

defense is more complicated.

(1) need a new DC for sure;
(2) let him clean house;
(3) bring in a couple of defensive FAs; and,
(4) devote majority of next two drafts to defense.

If we continue on as we're going on defense, we will waste AROD's prime years. This guy should win two more Super Bowls. offensive personnel look good going forward. We need to take advantage of that fact by investing our next two drafts on defense. Get bigger in the secondary. Get faster at ILB. Find a real complement to CMIII at the other OLB position. Get more 2-way DL like Daniels and Jones. Pickett-Raji-Jolly aka 3 HIPPO defense doesn't work in today's game. Need athletes on DL, not HIPPOs.

And if they go w/ Jolly, Raji and Jones next year in the base, teams will be looking to run the ball. Pickett and Jolly especially aren't and never have been pass rushers. Pick your poison... We'll see what happens when/if the Packers chose to play that kinda DL.

Packers have offered Raji 8M per and so far he hasn't accepted it. I Wouldn't give him more than that and scouts on other teams think its a very fair offer for him.

Either way, next year one of Jolly, Pickett or Raji probably isn't back. So they will have say Jolly and Raji or Pickett (not both), Datone Jones, Worthy, Daniels and probably Boyd.

I also don't think its coincidence that Raji had his best season when he was playing NT full time and since then has been playing mostly DE w/ Pickett at NT.

Out of Raji, Pickett, and Jolly I think the mostly likely to leave is Raji. I think Pickett will be back as well as Jolly.

I really like what I have been seeing out of Jones these last few games. He seems to be turning it on a bit. Also Daniels has been very productive. I think he would have had a sack today if it wasn't for a blatant holding penalty that got missed.
Now those guys are more pass rushing guys, so if they do lose any of the 3 they will have to find a run stuffing lineman.

Right now, based on Raji turning down an 8M salary, I would guess they'll got w/ Pickett and Jolly too. But theres a lot that can happen. Clearly the offer to Raji indicates they WANT Raji first and foremost. Personally I would rather have Raji and Jolly, but that is based on Raji accepting the contract offer. I wouldn't increase the offer to him and from what I've read its been the same offer since the season started and its still on the table.

Jones wasn't drafted in the 1st round to be a part time player. He needs to become a good enough player to be an every down DL or he wasn't worth using a 1st rd pick on. Daniels is great in his role and deserves more chances but if you ask him to play a lot more, chances are his deficiencies will start to be exploited.

I'm just curious, where did you hear about Raji turning down 8 mil a year? I didn't see that.

I agree with you too that I would rather have Raji first. I think they will sign Pickett to the veteran minimum or close to it. Give him a decent signing bonus on probably a 1-2 year deal. I really think they bring back Jolly too. He has been a huge lift to the DL this year.

Jones wasn't drafted to be a role player. He will be a full time player down the road, but right now he is starting to develop into a pretty good nickel/dime pass rusher.

My guess is they try to sign Raji first, Jolly 2nd and Pickett 3rd. Just my guess.

Daniels has been very good. To me his is a role player. Strictly a Nickel/Dime - pass rushing DT.

For next year, I'm curious how Worthy comes back, and what role he will play.

JS Online. Was the top of the headlines this morning. The scouts said it was a very fair offer for Raji and that Raji is the better player between he and Pickett overall, but Pickett is a little better run stuffer.

Pickett would get more than the vets minimum. He is still a very good run stuffer. My guess is in the 3M range, about the same or a little more as I would guess Jolly should get. Jolly has definitely helped the D and I think he is back almost w/o fail.

It did mention that Worthy has done a good job remaking his body since he was a rookie. That's at least encouraging. Who knows maybe Worthy and Jones can be the DE w/ Raji at NT. I would guess they would suffer in run D but it just depends how each of them develops. It would be hoping for a lot to think it will turn out that good tho.

Pickett, Raji, Jolly and Wilson are all FA after this year. Pickett is getting pd in the 5-6M range, Raji over 6M, IIRC.

Boyd is someone's heir, just not sure who at this point. Possibly Pickett, but Boyd would need to gain about 20 lbs to be able to play NT.

Jolly can probably play both DE and NT.

Pickett is 33 I think. Its not at all uncommon for run stuffing DT/NT to play very well into their mid 30's. I think Pickett could play a couple years, I wouldn't sign him for more than a 2yr/6M deal. He'll sign a relatively team friendly contract if he stays.

2013 Cap numbers: Pickett: 6.7 mil; Raji: 6.59 mil; Jolly: 715 K; Wilson: 642K. The total cap for Pickett, Raji and Jolly is $14.005 million (14.647 mil for all 4). My take is that GB could probably resign Pickett, Raji and Jolly for roughly the same cap space of $14 million currently allotted to them.

I am not a fan of Raji because I don't like giving large contracts with a lot of guaranteed money to inconsistent players. He is young, but he has more than average mileage given the amount of snaps he has taken. He has been durable though. I don't know Mr. Raji, and am not sure if he doesn't like GB, playing NT, or why he recently has not played up to the talent I think he has. I hope TT is wise about Raji and has a back-up plan if he lets Raji walk.

Evan. I got the same feeling judging by what Raji had to say in the article. Fact is the closer Raji is to the QB and the ball the more effective he is. And Raji himself is the one who suggested his best season was at NT. Nothing about that suggests he wants more attention or to play 3 tech. Quite the contrary actually.

- Going into this game everyone and their brother predicated that GB would run Lacy up the middle. And what did MM do, continue to run Lacy up the middle into two straight three and outs right out of the gates. Brilliant and creative play calling from an offensive mastermind..

- On that front, those two red zone runs to Starks on 1st and 2nd downs during our third drive of that game that resulted in the Crosby field goal were great examples of god awful play calling.

- I've defended MM as being a great coach, despite having a great QB, for the first time, I'm starting to re-think that thesis. I'm not on the "Cow Train" yet, maybe just calling a cab to get to the station.

- WIth the exception of his well timed sack, Brad Jones got ran over today. He did not play up to his big pre-season contract.

- And neither did Morgan Burnett, again. The guy is not a playmaker, not a run stopper and not really a great pass defender.

- But at least he is not nearly as bad as MD Jennings whose most memorable moment of the afternoon occurred when he almost got drug into the end-zone by Andre Brown. And then he went back to his normal invisible the rest of the game.

- Only the Green Bay Packer defense and whoever he scored a few TD's against earlier in the season, would make Brandon Jacobs look serviceable.

- Despite the Giants injury riddled and underachieving offensive line, and with the exception of one drive, the Pack D got next to zero pass rush.

- And Clay Mathews is as guilty as anyone.

- As feared, Cruz and Co. had plenty of space in the middle of the field. We didn't "chase him into the end-zone", but Clay Mathew's club-less hand did next to nothing to pressure Eli.

- As great of an athletic effort that JPP pick six was, that play has been called about nine times too many.

- Tramon came to play. Very nice to see.

- So did Jordy, again.

- We ended up scoring a TD, but Kuhn's directional choice after a rare great play call was absolutely horrendous. He could have crawled into the end-zone if he went outside, but instead, he decided to seek out as many G-men as physically possible.

- Why is Lattimore not on the field more?

- At least we play the only team in the NFL playing worse than us right now next week. Thanks MN.

Overall I didn't like McCarthy's play calling or decision making. I don't like to question play calling, but I didn't like the way he was trying to attack the Giants early.
I really think now would be a good time to start changing some things up on offense. Try running some more misdirection type of stuff to not become so predictable. With Rodgers he is so good that he can still beat a defense even if they know what's coming. Tolzien isn't.

Other then the sack and 1 other nice play, I just don't see why Jones is playing over Lattimore. To me Lattimore is the better player and he brings a much needed speed/hitting element to our defense that is lacking.
