Gut Reactions: 2013 Week 10

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • What a depressing game.
  • For the second week in a row, the Packers' secondary completely failed them.
  • Wallace going out early obviously hurt. And Tolzien had some killer turnovers. But I liked some of the things I saw from Tolzien. Made good calls pre-snap. Nice touchdown pass. But he's a career backup at best.
  • Dom Capers played a great game of checkers today. The problem, of course, is that Chip Kelly was playing chess.
  • Eddie Lacy is fun to watch.
  • I liked how Bostick chose to dish out a little punishment at the end of his TD catch.
  • I am depressed.
  • Well, Tolzien is probably your starter next week. Maybe Flynn is your backup.
  • Not sure if that was a TD catch by Jordy or not, but he is amazing regardless.
  • Lang at center? Taylor at guard? Newhouse at tackle? I'll be at the bar.
  • Why does it always take MD Jennings getting burned and looking terrible for someone else to see the field?
  • I understand Mike not calling a screen play the entire game last Monday night. I don't understand not featuring the screen game today.
  • Datone Jones, regardless of his 3rd down neutral zone penalty, had a nice game.
  • Mike Daniels continues to impress.
  • I really think Mike McCarthy did a decent job today after watching the QB he prepared with all week go out after the first series.
  • I'm still depressed.
  • Go Pack Go.

If Rodgers is not back for the Detroit away game, and expecting we'll be beaten by the Giants and Vikings (without a real QB), we'll need to win out the remaining five games (Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Chicago), to get to 10 wins. I would not bet on this, and don't think nine wins gets you into the playoffs.

Hopefully the 'chip fracture' theory is true, and he's Rodgers is out no more than another week.

Seriously, Tolzien played pretty decent. You trade that 1st Int for a TD, and Crosby makes those two field goals, we were in that game. The D is playing awful, but the ball literally just didnt bounce our way. If Rodgers is playing we beat the Bears and Eagles. The secondary is playing like a sieve, but we could have won. Also EDS going down is really going to suck. Newhouse is the worst and should be cut with MD. There are some players who have been given way too much slack.

So many missed opportunities. Regardless of Rodgers, our red zone offense needs a serious evaluation because it has sputtered all year. McCoy ran all over us as soon as Jolly went down. Lack of turnovers this year is baffling.

Tough to play QB without getting the first team reps.
Very disruptive to O-line when shifting Lang, Barclay, AND Newhouse.

Not really depressed, I had lowered my expectations going in.

"Next man up" is a nice idea; but at QB, well,...

I think the turning point in the game for the offense was when EDS got hurt. They couldn't run the ball anymore after that.

Next man up works when you have 1 or 2 players that you need the next man up... Rodgers, Finley, Cobb, J Jones, Mathews, Perry, Hayward, B Jones are all starters that have missed starts. That's not including backups or players that have went out in games...
There is a point when you have to many injury's and it affects your team. We are at that point.

-Seneca Wallace is a bitch. He pulled a Jay Cutler when we needed him to step up.

-Tolzien looks like he can be the man.

-Capers needs to figure something out now, or retire.

-Bostick had a great game.

-These back breaking fluke plays the D is giving up are beginning to come so often, that it's hard to regard them as flukes.

-Eddie can only do so much when they're stacking the OL with 9 guys.

Did you watch the game at all? Wallace looked miserable. He was warming up on the sidelines the whole time. He clearly wanted to go in and the coaching staff wouldn't let him. There's a lot to criticize in this game, but you're being unfair.

All I know is last week when Wallace went in, I looked at his eyes and he looked terrified. He wanted to be on the field getting beat on like I want a root canal.
May be the least shocked person that he went out of the game. I had him lasting two series before something went wrong, either a real injury or whatever.

This defense fucking sucks.

Slow to react.
Weak at the point.
Not smart.
Can't tackle.

What is it?
Are they not up to par athletically?
Are they not physically strong enough?
Are they all stupid?
Are they not coached up?

Just so sick of having a garbage offense in Green Bay.

So bad.

Cow, wife a big fan and I told her the Eagles would have a field day against our dbacks. They are what they are: cheap late round draft picks, who played at small colleges, lack speed. size and tackling ability.
The Vikes are decimated at defensive back and yet the scrubs who played against the Skins were sure tacklers, all over the Skins receivers and battled them all night. I think most of the scrubs were 6'2 and had speed.

Sorry Cow but a lot of people on this board think negative posts are trolling. Your not supposed to be negative. Why I have no fucking idea.
The defense on this team does not suck. That is not fair. The defense on this team is made up of late round picks who have no talent at covering receivers, speed, size. The pass rush is what it is, three fat oversized guys in the middle who get tired brushing their teeth in the am.
Our outside linebackers couldn't stop their nose from running let alone a back going around end.
We drafted poorly for several years now and it is on display. Yes we have Rogers, Mathews and Lacy but its that supporting casts that is not showing up. they don't suck, they are playing to their abilities and that's way worse.

Missed opportunity's is what cost them the game.
If Crosby hits those 2 field goals they are down by 8 points at the end of the game.
If Tolzein doesn't throw the interception in the redzone and they kick a field goal they are down by 5 at the end.
If he throws a better ball they are within 1 at the end.
Those things change a game...
Yes the defense didn't play good, but the fact is they missed out on opportunities, that could/would have changed the game.

Just saying....

The team would be completely different if they had a healthy, Clay Mathews, Nick Perry, Jermichael Finley, Randall Cobb, Bryan Bulaga, Casey Hayward.

You can't lose that much talent and not be a better team. If they have all of those players healthy and were missing Rodgers, they would be a lot better then they are right now.

I agree Rodgers, is the most important player on the team and covers a lot of deficiency's but the fact is, this team is missing its best players.

He escapes blame due to McMillian and Jennings being bad but considering his contract, Burnett is closer to Aaron Rouse than he is Nick Collins

Unfortunate for Wallace but opportunity opened the door for Tolzein and he ain't letting Wallace back in. Packers found their future backup and he's pretty fucking good.

This guy definately is capable of winning a game with some practice time. The defense. Oh, the defense. I have nothing further to say.

I'm with most of you here... the defense is to blame. The game plan is terrible. We don't blitz. And when we do, it's usually ineffective. The secondary generally looks lost in zone, the pass rush is awful, and we can't stop teams in predictable situations. We gave up 5 ypc in the last 2 minutes when everyone and their mothers knew the Eagles were gonna run the ball. How did Dom not know?

We don't bliz because Dom knows the quality of the corners and safeties we have and they need all the help they can get and even then can't stop the big plays.

I don't think it's the players... unless all of our DB's decided to suck this year. Their pass coverage PFF grades from last year to this year have decreased drastically. What's the difference? I honestly don't know. Ineffective pass rush this year maybe? That doesn't help. The DB's can't hold coverage all day.

I fail to see what one has to do w/ the other. Matthews plays D and Rodgers is on Offense. If Matthews can't contribute effectively then he shouldn't be on the field. Period... Whether Rodgers is playing or not. The D needs to create some turnovers no matter what. Tramon had an INT in his hands or at the very least an incomplete, but Burnett knocks it out of his hands and into the waiting hands of Jackson. That's not poor coverage.

Foles BADLY underthrows a long TD to Cooper, so much so that the Packers DB's don't have a chance to react to it. That's not poor coverage either. Nothing but bad luck in both cases.

It was an AWFULLY under thrown pass, so much so, that the DB's who were trying to run deep w/ the receiver couldn't tell that instead of a pass where the receiver was running was way to the side. Cooper had to change from running upfield to running sideways to get near it. The DB's react to what the WR is doing and since it was such a terrible pass they didn't have a chance to adjust. That's a POOR pass that the iggles got very lucky on. Nothing a DB can do in that situation.

It's NOT Capers. The scheme is good, the execution sucks. Dom cannot make people tackle or catch interceptions. How many times did Dom's plan have guys hitting the back behind the line? He can't make tackles or picks. The players are not executing the plays. If WRs were dropping passes you wouldn't say that is McCarthy's fault. Well, may YOU would.

Dom is playing the players they drafted and those late round draft picks and undrafteds are showing you why they were.
I mean seriously, 31 teams have high priced football people who analize players constantly. Any 6th roud pick was passed over by 31 teams 5 times or more, for a reason.
Shields, Hayward, Burnett, Williams could not play first string on any other team.

Fuck draft and develop get some proven talent with a history of not missing games (injuries). Murphy it's time to pull your weight and bring some talent to Green Bay. Hell you played for the Redskins they had a ton of Free-Agents

Wow such more to analize. My take:
1. Seneca Wallace wants to be anywhere but on a football field. Not surprised at all he kind of got an injury and took himself out. I was actually expecting it.
2. Rogers doesn't play defense. I'm one who believes this is the worst defense in the NFL and have believed that. Rogers made them look good by scoring more than they gave up.

3. Again, no pass rush that's effective. Worse, no stopping those end runs, on either side of the line, defensive backs may as well not even be on the field. Ted wanted late round picks and undrafteds to fill this role and that's what he got.

4. Poor tackling all around and in the end the O line looked like they played like we knew who they were.

Bigger picture, can't fix this mess with one or two drafts but until this team gets some hard core tackling corners who can cover this team is not wining any playoff games.

So nice of you to show up when things are going your way Cow!

We lost 6, count them 6 more starters today.

Overall we have had to lose: both starting tackles, Matthews (crippled), Perry (crippled), Hayward, Jolly, Rodgers, Finley, Cobb, Wallace, EDS, and Barclay in order for your retarded season prediction to have a prayer of coming true.

Remember 6-10 Cow? However to call your prediction retarded would be an insult to anyone who is mentally disabled because you you actually choose to be as stupid as you are.

You are an inbred lover of misery. You backed off this site because you knew you were wrong and now you come back when things go South for the team?

Am I resorting to insults? Yes I am. You deserve every single one.

Most people who comment here are FAIR MINDED. We are not Homers. We try to be objective and make real contributions and learn from each other.

You for some reason think you know more about football than the next Packer loving fan but you are not and your stupid predictions prove it. You may turn out to be right about the record, but it required the total annihilation of the roster to make it so.

Oh yea don't forget you said Lacy was a bust.

Please go away again and don't come back.

I recommend people who enjoy this site simply commit to ignoring you (a Cow boycott), because you are not here for any productive reason whatsoever except to bring us down to your pathetic level.

I would rather hang out with Gollum from the Hobbit than you. You make him look like Man of the Year.

You routine is so old, tired, and predictable it is even worse than some of Capers' coverage schemes...see I just threw you a bone Cow! Go fetch it. It's right over a cliff.

My apologies to other readers here for my rant, and I will dismiss myself from commenting if I have been out of line.

But enough is enough man. It's hard enough enduring the streak of shit luck the Pack has had.

GO PACK GO

Ok I feel a little better now.

Really only missing Clay's hand today AND THEY STILL SUCKED!
it's not my fault that before the season started i could tell the D was going to be awful and you couldn't.

I've never been more embarrassed to be a fan of the gutless team. they have absolutely no heart. this team just got out-muscled by a Chip Kelly directed Eagles team. Imagine what the Seahawks would do to this heartless bunch of clueless quitters.

i can handle losing.

but this team doesn't even compete anymore. just a bunch of losers running into each other like a bunch of weak-ass morons.

don't worry about me coming back here this year (i know i've said that before... blah, blah, blah). but i've never been more sure of anything in my life... this team will not win another title w/ Rodgers. 2 hall of fame QB's playing their entire careers (basically) and only getting 1 ring each. so sad.

STOP WASTING HALL OF FAMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the defense is beyond fixing.

it will take multiple years to get it done.

hopefully it's someone else doing the picking...

other than Matthews and maybe Raji TT's draft picks on d have been pretty sh*tty.

Here's the real issue, and lets not sugar coat it. I suffered with this for at least 30 years and want to warn you loving packer fans: beware of cheap ball, it will kill you.
I'm refering to the Lions. They had the deepest pocket owner on the planet, Bill Ford. Bill was also the tighest big ass on the planet. Pay a couple of stars some big money then acquire players from colleges you never heard from.
The Lions used to win the most penalized team in the universe award -the players were dumb a____ to be kind. Hey they came from wherever and costs them nothing.
I SEE VISIONS OF THIS NOW WITH THE PACKERS.ORG

One thought Clay. I think we have a ton of injuries because we are drafting late round picks who were injury prone in those Div 1a and II teams they played for.
Frank Zombo, was oft injured playing at Central Michigan, that power house, yet we picked him and he was oft injured playing for us.

There is a pattern here. Other teams passing on the oft injured and is picking them up.

Good point. Lets see, we need at least two top O linemen to protect the franchise. Good at running back, need to gutt the entire dbacks and start over with bone crushing tacklers who really are 6'2 with speed and can cover.
Need to dump Raji, Jolly and Pickett and get some lean 6'5 pass rushers with speed like a Peppers, who we passed on in FA. That should take about three drafts.

No doubt shitty tackling was an issue. It seems we want to strip the ball and tackle high. That's High School stuff, and Capers issue. So is the lack of the pass rush.

For 3 years D has been a major liability despite numerous draft picks on D.

I think we all see that Rodgers covers a lot of D issues.

With one playoff spot up for grabs (assuming Seahags and 49 f-off's) get their division and a wildcard.

hard to see us winning the division.

Blow the whole thing up. Er have too much talent to be this shitty.

That said, here’s the killer thing as a fan.
Eagles get stopped on third and 2 late in the game. Great, right?
No, there’s a penalty that we can’t decline, making it 3rd and 7. Everyone paying attention dies a little inside, because they know that this is the worst possible thing to happen. They know that given another chance, the Eagles will easily convert, 5 yards back or no. Result: Eagles for 8 yards, 1st down.

I stated a couple of days ago that, while I expected a loss, I wanted to see our Packers at least be competitive. We didn't get that today. Losing Wallace early no doubt had an effect on that. The defense did not look bad until the last quarter (when they were tired), and our running game was as productive as it could've been. Since we are on to our third different starting QB in three weeks I will reserve a final judgement until after the NY game. The success of our season is now on the shoulders of Tolzien. For all of us who pined for a Badger to play for the Pack, well, we got it. Give your support to Scott and the rest of the Packers. A win in NY gives us hope going forward. A loss there equals a dead season.

I beg to differ...I think we were competitive today. a coupla plays go the other way (crosby making the 42 yarders, tramon getting an INT instead of a goofy tipped TD, tolzien hitting a wide open Jordy to convert a 3rd down) and we really could have won the game easily. time of possession and total yards point to a competitive effort. That said, the D did collapse in 2nd half and THAT was decidedly not competitive.

I saw terror int the eyes of Wallace last week. the last place on earth he wanted to be was on the field taking a beating. His play showed it as he tossed the ball away when he had a path to a first down.
I think he faked his injury to get the hell off the field today. Another poor decision by Ted.
Note: The guy who beat us was a draft pick by the Eagles and the second or third stringer at that. He was not an after thought cheap available guy to sit on the bench.

What did we learn today? Among the obvious, the Packers are much better with Rodgers. However Tolzien looks like someone you could groom as a competent backup. Sure, a number of mistakes but they did move the ball down the field a number of times with him and Lacy. Plus they lost two o-lineman during the game.

Also seems like Boykins belongs. For being so slow he gets open quite often. Plus he makes the catch.

Something's wrong with this D. Not only the historic bad games giving up yards over the last few years, but the inability to stop the Bears and Eagles the last two weeks when they knew they would be running. How often do we see an RB get around the edge and go for 7 or 8 yards before contact. Maybe Walden wasn't the problem. We started the year out tacking well, but it's been horrible of late.

Clay needs his hands to be effective. It's almost cruel to see him get close and not be able to wrap-up. Plus he uses his hands as much as anyone to get the blockers off him. Don't expect much from him until the club comes off.

Could have used Crosby to make those right-hash kicks. Something about that side gives him trouble, although the kicks were straight as an arrow. Nice form - bad results.

Way too many injuries to make much noise this year. A few more today. It's not nearly the same team that started the season. Almost laughable really. And let's face it, without #12, they're going to need about every break possible to pull out a win. Fortunately, I'm a long-view fan so I feel very optimistic about this team. But it's just not going to happen this year.

Morgan Burnett is the most over-rated Packer on this team. The guy is not good. And yet, he is the best in a set of very sub-par safeties. Kills me. MD Jennings is awful. The other two guys are not even worth mentioning. At last Banjo is good on special teams. Not one of those idiots is net plus against the run. And to beat them on the pass, all you have to do is throw the damn ball straight up in the air. God Awful. If there is one area of this team where TT has gotten it wrong outside of back-up QB, its safety. Bunch of ass clowns back there.

I don't have a problem with Burnett as much as I do with his supporting cast on defense. I find it difficult to single out any one player for the way the entire defense played today. We couldn't stop the run and we couldn't stop the Eagles' big passing plays. The Packers not picking up a safety in the draft or in free agency is now exposing a huge weakness on this team. Today we had the first take away since the Cleveland game. What's up with that?

I think Burnett would be better if he had a better safety next to him. Burnett needs to play better no doubt, but Jennings has been horrible. Time to move on. Banjo, McMillan can't be worse.

I know Huff and Rhodes are available. I think its time to go get one.

And if they don't want to do that, how about moving Hyde to Safety or coming up with some other packages using 3 ILB's. (Big Oakie)... Lattimore could probably play Safety with his speed.

It's like he's calling plays regardless of down/distance.

We finally have a running game. Finally. And every third and short is a 25 yard pass downfield. Even with the third string QB.

Oh, except for that 3rd and short where they did a surprise handoff to Kuhn for a dive.

There is a little devil sitting on MM's shoulder chanting: "it's 3rd and short, you've got to deceive the defense".

Quit trying to be cute. We've got one of the best YPC in the league, just grind out those short yards.

To me a piece of that is they replaced Lattimore with Jones. Lattimore proved to be a playmaking LB. Its not that Jones has been really bad, but Lattimore was that much better IMO.

Did Capers break Mathews thumb or refuse to let the defense stretch out so that they got hamstring injuries? If you think even the best coordinator could stop an NFL Offense with second stringers or hurt players in so many positions you are mistaken. You have been spoiled by the success of the Packers over the past 20 years....

Ok, as we are all ripping on the defense. How about some to the offense...

Why are we not seeing more passes to the RB's? Lacy is a beast in space. Find ways to get him on the edge with the ball in space.
Also why not run 1 play in a game getting Franklin the ball out in space on a swing pass or something? He is a playmaker. We need them on the field.

Also why has it taken this long to get Bostick the ball? I would like to see him more involved in the offense.

When is the last time we have seen a reverse ran? Why not use White's speed and run him on a reverse. The guy is just fast.

Kuhn's best attribute to me is catching the ball out of the backfield. Time to use him that way more often.
Speaking of Kuhn. I love the fullback dive, when you have Eddie Lacy in the backfield that everyone is paying attention to. I hate it when you don't have Lacy in the backfield.

I agree with the premise, but not necessarily the details (I don't want Kuhn with the ball at all). I want the RB's more involved in the passing game for sure. Dump offs, screens, and even draws to keep the pass rush honest. We need more slants also. Get some more WC in the playbook with A-Rod out.

It just seems when Kuhn gets the ball thrown to him he gets 4-8 yards every time. I would take that...

I am a huge fan of Franklin. I think its time they start using him more. 5-10 plays a game I don't think its to much to ask for.

I understand that this game as well as last weeks game is tough to be harsh on the offense when you lose your starting QB on the first series of each game. And especially when one of those QB's is Aaron Rodgers.
But I think they could find ways to make the offense better and more complete, if they start using the RB's more out of the backfield in the passing game.

"I agree with the premise, but not necessarily the details (I don’t want Kuhn with the ball at all). "

I couldn't agree more. I cringe every single time he gets the ball. Speaking of the FB dive, I don't think John Kuhn has gotten more than three yards on that carry since the 2010 season.

Ask the Saints how important a good coach is worth! Crap last year, now with the same cast and their coach back, what a difference. Sadly for us MM can't do the same.

The Packers don't have the same cast, Einstein.

Does anyone know, how many of our dbacks played at a high level in div I. I know one played like third string div I but weren't the rest of these guys dissed by 31 other teams as too small, too slow of foot, poor tackling and cover skills.

Just what Ted was looking for, cheap acquisitions we could develop. Mind you were developing them on the field in real games. How is this working Ted?

We needed this defense to stand up. They failed up front and in the back. MM needs a DC with some fire. Capers isn't the guy to kick someone in the ass. Time for his old ass to move on.

We've got a bunch of high draft picks that played high level D1; 2nd round Hayward, 3rd round Burnett, etc. But I wouldn't expect a turd fan to know that, let alone be able to google it.

I can't get even begin to wrap my head around the type of fucking guy who feels the need to post the same idiotic argument with half a dozen different usernames. Pathetic is an aspiration for this guy.

Defense looked horrible. The first half was serviceable, I think, but the second half was just, oh my God. Also, the running game seemed to suffer quite a bit after EDS was sidelined. Not sure about Tolzien being a career backup -- a bit too early to call, but I definitely saw the intelligence and preparation of a starter. He knew what he was doing at a professional level, which is far more than what we can say about Wallace last week.

There is some reason for the doom and gloom being posted on this site, but GB can still win this division. Injuries were to Wallace (Groin), EDS (knee), Barclay (knee), Perry (foot) and Hayward (hamstring). No idea of the severity of these injuries, or whether the players will miss games due to them. Hayward's and Perry's injuries concern me the most as they appear to aggravations of injuries that have already cost them games in the past, but we need EDS and Barclay too. We need to have some games with no injuries and to get some guys back. Here are the schedules:

Detroit (6-3): @ Pitt, Tampa Bay, Packers, @ Philly, Ravens, giants, Minn;

Chicago (5-4): Ravens, @ Rams, @ Minn, Dallas, @ Browns, @ Philly, Packers;

GB (5-4): @ giants, Minn, @ Detroit, Atlanta, @ Dallas, Steelers, @Chicago.

Looks to me like we have to beat Detroit and then match Detroit's record, and probably beat Chicago (depending on tie breakers, we might have to gain 1 game on Chicago too. Detroit plays Tampa Bay on 11/24 and plays the Packers just 3 days later on 11/28. That should help. Detroit has 5 home games and 2 away. Ravens (and GB) might be their only tough games on paper. Chicago plays 3 home games, 4 away. Baltimore, Dallas, Philly, maybe the Rams (and GB) look to be reasonably tough games. GB plays 3 home games, 4 away. On paper its tough games might be Detroit, Dallas, and Chicago. GB might have Rodgers back for the game @ Dallas on 12/16. Chicago and less so Detroit can lose to any team (Chicago lost to Minn and Washington and Detroit lost to the 5-4 Arizona). Tough, but doable for GB if there are no more key injuries. They play the games for a reason.
