Packers Daily Links: Rodgers Soon to Receive Contract Offer

Apparently ProFootballTalk.com couldn’t allow CBSSports.com to own the Aaron Rodgers story for a day. After a report by CBS’s Mike Freeman saying Rodgers would not hold out for a new contract, Mike Florio of PFT issued a vague follow-up report from another anonymous source. “Rodgers hasn’t asked for a new deal, and he hasn’t complained about his current contract,” writes Florio. “A league source with knowledge of the situation believes, however, that the Packers soon will take care of Rodgers.” How soon? Nobody knows. The important part is, ProFootballTalk.com ended the news cycle owning the story.

Reacting to the Aaron Rodgers news is the Green Bay Press-Gazette, NFL.com and Lombardi Ave.

Providing insight from former NFL general manager Bill Polian into the Aaron Rodgers contract situation are the Press-Gazette and JSOnline.

Former NFL MVP and current Packers preseason broadcaster Rich Gannon is also asked for his opinion on Aaron Rodgers over at JSOnline.

NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com digs into a report from MIT researchers about kickers in the NFL that attempts to explain some of Mason Crosby’s difficulties. “Since Crosby entered the NFL in 2007, he has attempted more 50-plus yard field goals than every place-kicker except the Oakland Raiders’ Sebastian Janikowski,” writes Seifert. “He has missed 19 of those 33 attempts, accounting for nearly half of the total misses in his career.” The research also goes onto point out that Lambeau Field was the second-most difficult kicking venue in the entire league behind only New England’s Gillette Stadium, and that was before Gillette switched to artificial turf. Presumably, Lambeau is currently the most difficult kicking stadium in the NFL.

According to AL.com, the Packers will be checking out Alabama A&M offensive lineman Jamaal Johnson-Webb at his pro day workout on Wednesday. “Headlined by Johnson-Webb, who could go in the later rounds of the of the draft in late April, a group of 19 Bulldogs will work out for representatives from the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs,” writes reporter Nick Birdsong. Johnson-Webb was the only player in the history of Alabama A&M to be invited to the NFL Combine.

More pro day information comes from Packer Report and NFL.com that has an article on a Northern Iowa wide receiver that reportedly ran 4.19 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Minnesota’s pro day where a Packers scout was in attendance.

There was a lot of discussion on social media Tuesday about St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson making a visit to Green Bay, a visit that was cancelled due to weather, as reported by Tom Silverstein of JSOnline. John Rehor of PackersTalk.com thinks the Packers should pass on Jackson anyway.

This year’s free agent class of wide receivers and tight ends is profiled at the Packers official website.

The annual checkup series continues at Fox Sports Wisconsin with the tight end Andrew Quarless.

Bob McGinn and Tyler Dunne talk about several topics on their weekly Packers podcast at JSOnline.

The draft needs of the Packers get a look at Yahoo Sports.

Whether the Packers are interested in Cullen Jenkins and Ricky Jean-Francois is debated at Lombardi Ave.

  1. California Cheesehead says:

Rodgers is total class. He deserves every cent he gets.

  2. Derek in CO says:

Let’s just hope the Packers offer him a fair deal and doesn’t ruffle any feathers. We need ARod to be a happy Packer 4 Life.

    • Evan says:

I honestly couldn’t have less concern about anything like that happening.

      • Stroh says:

No doubt. That’s just not how the Packers do business. They don’t ruffle feathers.

        • Evan says:

As long as the player isn’t a jackass (see: Walker, Javon).

          • MarkinMadison says:

#12 is so chill about the money issue that I’m not sure what to make of it – I am not even 100% sure that he will demand 100% market value. I don’t see him signing a deal and then whining about it – no matter how much or how little he gets. If he wanted to do that he’s been given plenty of opportunities by Wilde and others to complain about his current deal. Instead all he’s done (publically at least) is said that the deal was good for him when he signed it, and he’s not looking to get out of it. Dude may be the rare guy who is making monopoly money and is grounded enough to realize it.

  3. Tarynfor12 says:

What ever makes Rodgers happy…I’m happy!

  4. Norman says:

An anonymous league source with knowledge of the situation also confirmed that Mike Florio is a douche.

  5. Anthony says:

What kind of contract do you see Rodgers getting?

    • Derek in CO says:

ARod just turned 29. I’d say 5 years, 100 mil, which gives him one more contract in GB at age 34-35. but really he’ll get just slightly more than Flacco in yearly salary and guaranteed money. Of course, the cap hits each year is more important.

      • Evan says:

I’m thinking more like 7 years. Lock him up for good.

        • MarkinMadison says:

I agree. 1) Doesn’t see himself playing in 10 years. 2) Doesn’t want to play elsewhere. 3) Will want to be cap friendly. Suggests to me a longer deal.

        • No one does a 7 year contract for the simple reason that signing bonuses are only amortized across a maximum of 5 years. The Packers would be renegotiating by the fourth or fifth year regardless.

      • Stroh says:

I think he’ll beat Flacco. I think he’ll get a deal averaging 21M. He’s gotta get a little more than Flacco at least.

        • Lars says:

Flacco’s was six years and I expect Rodgers to get something at least that long. Five years means you will be saying good by to Rodgers at his age 34 season.

Reading beteween the lines he says he wants to finish his career in GB and plans to play for at least 8 more years. I think 7/$150 with a large guarantee IF the Packers don’t wait too long.

  6. MarkinMadison says:

The Yahoo break-down of Packers’ draft needs is interesting. The only player group where they find a 1st round need and value (and so propose a name for the first round) is on the DL. This lines up with my general feeling that the Packers could go anywhere with their first round pick – they have lots of needs but no one that so glaring worse than the others that they have to go position over BPA. This would be even more true if they pick up Canty or another quality DL in FA.

    • Evan says:

It’s also interesting because their two biggest needs (I’d argue) are safety and DL – the two deepest positions this year. So that should factor into their thinking when it comes to value in the first round.

      • Lars says:

The Packers always need DLine. They draft and draft and draft there and still it’s still a mediocre, at best—even though they only use 2 down linemen more than 1/2 the time.

I hope they sign Canty and Jolly makes it back so they can address the offense this year. TE, RB, WR, T/G, S, ILB. And, no worries, they will take a DLineman in this draft—a NT.

  7. 2 share owner says:

I would argue O line and Rb.
