Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy have been called the best quarterback/coach combo in a column by NFL.com’s Adam Schein. “One of the reasons I rank Rodgers and McCarthy ahead of Eli and Coughlin or Brady and Belichick is because the Packers’ pair is attached at the hip,” writes Schein. “McCarthy calls the plays, but the coach shares a brain with his quarterback. McCarthy and Rodgers have the same philosophy, formed through years of quarterback school, offseason programs, training camps, practices and game-day experiences. They meet, they talk, they plan for the chess match. And then they dominate.” You’ll receive no arguments here, although the other combinations mentioned by Schein are worthy competitors. After all, Rodgers/McCarthy have fewer Super Bowl rings than Eli/Coughlin and Brady/Belichick.
Packers rookie running back Johnathan Franklin joined the All Packers Talk podcast on Thursday for an interview. The fourth round draft choice had some interesting things to say about Randall Cobb being a mentor on punt returns. It was also interesting to hear Franklin talk about the coldest game he’s ever played in, a bowl game in Washington, D.C. where it was 14 degrees. Franklin said he couldn’t wait for the game to be over. It gets even colder in Green Bay, Johnathan. Wear some warm clothes and get used to it.
A feature on tight end Jermichael Finley appears at FoxSportsWisconsin.com. “This is an all-new Jermichael Finley,” writes reporter Paul Imig. “The most outspoken member of the Green Bay Packers has completely shifted his locker room demeanor and off-the-field attitude in recent months.” The article talks about how much quieter and less outspoken Finley has become recently. For a guy who’s said many foolish things in Green Bay, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But the most important thing will be his play on the field.
In an interview with the Green Bay Press-Gazette, punter Tim Masthay talked about the challenge of place-kick holding for a left-footed kicker this offseason. “I don’t know that I’m game-ready right now, but I think I’m doing a decent job with it,” Masthay is quoted as saying by reporter Wes Hodkiewicz. “Once I found out we signed Giorgio (Tavecchio), when I was back in Kentucky, I started working on it right away. It’s coming along and I’m confident in it.”
