Former Packers assistant coach Joe Philbin will be in the spotlight as he announced on Tuesday that his new team, the Miami Dolphins, will be the team featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” “While Green Bay Packers fans who understand how general manager Ted Thompson operates know full-well that their favorite team will never do HBO’s training-camp reality show ‘Hard Knocks,’ at least they’ll get to see some familiar faces later this summer when the Miami Dolphins star on the NFL Films-produced show,” writes Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com. The first episode will air on Aug. 7. Former Packers head coach Mike Sherman should also figure prominently as the Dolphins new offensive coordinator.
News broke Tuesday evening that wide receiver Donald Driver has agreed to a restructured deal with the Green Bay Packers per Lance Allan of WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee who provided a quote direct from Driver’s agent, Jordan Woy. ”We have agreed to terms with the Packers but need to review it (Wednesday) to finalize,” Woy reportedly wrote in an email. It’s only fair to point out that in the report from WTMJ, it says the Packers have expressed a desire for Driver to take a pay cut. Although it’s assumed Driver will be taking a hefty pay cut as part of any renegotiated deal, the Packers have never publicly stated as such to my knowledge. A pay cut is implied, but out of respect for Driver and to maintain good public relations, they haven’t said they want him to agree to less money.
Another player whose contract is on the horizon is offensive lineman T.J. Lang whose deal expires after the 2012 season. Lang talked to Jason Wilde about his future with the Packers. “I think it’s still pretty early in the process to worry about that stuff,” Lang is quoted as saying. “I try not to think about it because I know it can cause some stress for some guys, talking to a few guys last year that were in their contract year. So I try not to think about it the best I can. The way I look at it, I signed a four-year deal, I’m ready to play that out. If anything happens where the Packers want to jump in and start talking about extensions, then that would be fantastic.” As far as players whose contracts expire after 2012, the priority list would probably be wide receiver Greg Jennings followed by Lang.

An exercise comparing the Packers to the Patriots is undertaken by Adam Czech of AllGreenBayPackers.com, which is inspired by the book War Room by Michael Holley.
