Ever since it’s been learned that other NFL teams expressed concern about Eddie Lacy’s toe injury, it’s been a hot topic in Green Bay to speculate about what’s wrong. Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel got the lowdown from Alabama’s team doctor, E. Lyle Cain Jr. “The joint underneath the toenail was fused to allow the ligament to work better basically,” Cain is quoted as saying. “It’s something you do to give you a better push-off. His big toe moves just like a normal big toe in terms of motion. . . . If you fused it completely, it’d give you a stiff big toe and you can’t push off and that’s a big problem. In Eddie’s case, he does not have that. His fusion does not affect his big-toe motion.” Lacy himself also expressed optimism that it won’t affect him going forward. You have to take the opinion of Lacy and Alabama’s doctor with a small grain of salt, however. It’s not as if they’re going to raise any concerns.
First round draft choice Datone Jones joined ESPNMilwaukee for a radio interview on Thursday and talked about a former Packers defensive lineman. “My hero was Michael Strahan growing up, but I loved the nastiness of Reggie White. He was a nasty guy. The Minister of Defense,” Jones is quoted as saying by Jason Wilde. “He was a great player, I want to model myself after (him). I wish he was still alive so he could take me under his (wing). I want to be the best that has ever played the game of football. I can’t stand losing. I just want to be great.” Packers fans would love it if Jones turns out to be the next White, but there’s a long ways to go until that happens. Jones’ journey begins this weekend at rookie orientation camp.
A feature on undrafted rookie Andy Mulumba appears in the Green Bay Press-Gazette by reporter Pete Dougherty. Despite being selected in the first round of the Canadian Football League draft, Mulumba expressed his commitment to the Packers and the NFL. “It was an honor to be drafted in the CFL with the second pick,” Mulumba is quoted as saying. “But my goal is to play in the NFL. I want to play at the highest level.” Insight is also shared from Mulumba’s defensive line coach at Eastern Michigan, Ken Delgado, which is interesting seeing as he also coached former Packer Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.
