While most of the work-a-day world will be getting ready to kick off their weekend, the Green Bay Packers rookies will just be getting their work week started.
The Packers will hold their first of three practices during their rookie orientation camp on Friday evening (beginning at 4 p.m. Central time, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).
Following practice, head coach Mike McCarthy will conduct a press conference at 6 p.m., which will be streamed live at the team’s official website.
Two more practices will be held the remainder of the weekend, one each on Saturday and Sunday.
And while these sessions will not be grueling, they are necessary to the development of the first-year players on the Packers roster. They’ll be counting heavily on the first six defensive players picked in this year’s Draft to help improve a unit that vastly underachieved last season.
As the name of the camp suggests, these practices will be about orientation. The rookies will be meeting their new coaches and the rest of the team for the first time.
Any Xs and Os they’ll be getting into will just be learning the basics. But they’ve all got to start somewhere.
Under the microscope, in particular, will be outside linebacker Nick Perry, defensive lineman Jerel Worthy and cornerback Casey Hayward: three players who could play major roles on defense in 2012.
