Free agent defensive lineman Chris Canty will begin his visit with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday, which will reportedly last through Thursday.
Canty has previously had visits with the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs. After being cut by the New York Giants in a cost-saving move, he is free to sign with any team he chooses.
If the Packers have serious interest in Canty, expect a contract offer to come shortly after or even during his visit. Canty will likely want to get a deal done before the start of free agency when teams start allocating dollars to other players.
The Packers will no doubt do a medical examination on Canty to find out whether they’d be getting damaged goods or a player with a clean bill of health.
Also on Wednesday is the University of Wisconsin pro day workout, one of several across the nation that also includes Alabama A&M, Duquesne, Eastern Washington, Kent State, Mississippi State, North Alabama, Northern Arizona, Pittsburgh, South Florida, Texas Tech and West Texas A&M.”
Because of the proximity of Madison to Green Bay, the Packers always have representatives at the Badgers pro day, and in many instances general manager Ted Thompson has been in attendance.
How the Canty visit will impact Thompson’s availability is unknown. There’s certainly enough other coaches and front office staff in Green Bay to attend to Canty, and his visit will span two days, so Thompson can always meet with Canty on Thursday if he’s on the road on Wednesday.
