Grant Cleared To Practice
Ryan Grant will return to practice on Wednesday. Grant and Donald Driver should play Sunday against the Falcons.

According to Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, running back Ryan Grant has been cleared to return to practice and will do so on Wednesday.
After suffering a bruised kidney last week against the Bears, Grant was held out of yesterdays game against the Denver Broncos. While James Starks took the majority of carries Sunday, look for the team to return to the split workload they began the season with.
In other injury news McCarthy said that wide receiver Donald Driver, who was carted off the field with a knee injury during the first half only to return in the second half and catch a touchdown pass, was not in danger of missing the Packers matchup with the Falcons this Sunday.

At this point in his career, Donald Driver must be more 'Tussin than man.
Tough hombre.

I still think Starks is the better back. So what?

Yeah, we should probably just trade him, maybe for a pony.

No word on Bulaga? Newhouse looked o.k., but he's not Bulaga. And boy, Cliffy goes out for one play to check his leg and Rodgers just could not get the ball out of his hands fast enough. Spoke volumes about his confidence in Sherrod right now.

Dear Chad Clifton,
Please, for the love of god, puppies and Christmas, do not get hurt. Newhouse is proving to hold his own, but Derek <strike>Mandarich</strike> Sherrod is still not ready for prime time. I like my quarterbacks standing up, not flat as pancakes.
Thank you for your cooperation in advance,
Kelly

4 games into his rookie season and you compare a developmental guy that was the last pick in the 1st round to the #1 overall pick in a prior draft. Did I miss an entire college season of Sherrod hype like Mandrich?
You remember how bad Newhouse looked last year prior to an off-season in an NFL strength and conditioning program? He was on an NFL roster due to upside only, because it sure wasn't apparent on the field he belonged his rookie year.
Wow....

All I'm saying is Sherrod is not developing like I would expect a <i>first</i> round draft choice should be. The fact that Newhouse was apparently above him on the depth chart--and Newhouse really did not look good in the preseason--tells me that Sherrod was even worse. No, not the nationwide hype that Mandarich generated, but I think it's reasonable to hold a first round pick to a higher standard especially when you ink a deal that reflects being a first round pick. Yeah, I'm not impressed and stand by my opinion.
And for the record Mandarich was picked second. Aikman was the first of that draft class.

Correct same draft class as Barry and Deion sanders and derrick thomas (all those players the packers had a shot to draft)

Also, I think we were spoiled by Bulaga's development last year and Bulaga had OTAs, and a rookie minicamp, Sherrod didn't

My mistake on Mandrich's draft position, I knew better.
Newhouse didn't look good in the pre-season? Completely and emphatically disagree. He looked like a completely different player from year 1 to year 2.
You draft on upside, not year one. Rookie tackles on offense and defense rarely see the field in year one let along make an impact. Who's the last Packers pick from round 1 in year 1 that impressed you? Based on your criteria for 1st round status every pick in round 1 for 20 years have sucked outside of Clay Matthews.

"Newhouse didn’t look good in the pre-season?"
Actually, he looked terrible in that first game against the Browns. Improved as the preseason went on though.

<i>Who’s the last Packers pick from round 1 in year 1 that impressed you?</i>
BJ Raji more recently (yes, I know he didn't play much but that was more injury related than skill) and Bryan Bulaga. Yes, we got spoiled with Bulaga's development. But that really should be the norm, not the exception. Looking back at the past few years, the Packers seem to always have someone on the O-Line that goes down with an injury for weeks on end. You need to have a reliable backup corps that is ready to take over at a moment's notice. Heck, this is how Mark Tauscher got resigned the first time he wasn't a Packer. Don't tell me people weren't panicked by the relatively anemic depth chart when Bulaga went down.
Sterling Sharpe if you want to expand the list. Sharpe was out of the box ready for the big leagues his first year out.
Won't put Rodgers in that list, but I won't put him in the <i>holy god, did he suck</i> categtory either. But at the time we had the luxury to develop a QB since we had an iron-clad one already.

Nope, not after 4 games. Not a one of them.

Aaron - Do you agree or disagree that Newhouse was an NFL tackle in stature only his 1st year and needed an NFL offseason to physically acclimate and compete in the league? Is it any different with Sherrod (other than people's over-inflated expectations of 1st year, 1st round picks)?

I totally agree - just think most people remember Newhouse looking terrible that first preseason game.
