As I have maintained since he was drafted, Corey Williams is a good player, not a great one. Yesterday, at his introductory press conference with the Cleveland Browns, he was just a classless player. Williams went out of his way to indicate how ‘unhappy’ he was with the Packers, not two months after singing the praises of the team that drafted him and made him part of a defensive line rotation that gave him ample opportunity to get to the quarterback. He is getting his big payday because of the Packers, even if they restricted his movement in free agency. And how does he choose to leave the organization? Does he say, he knows the NFL is a business, and that he understands that the Packers are simply looking out for their best interests? No. He says some nonsense about ‘wanting out’ and how he ‘feels the love’ in Cleveland. Sure. And if Vladimir Putin had given him $16.7 million guaranteed to come play for the Moscow Muscovites, he would have no doubt ‘felt the love’ in Russia as well.
The funny thing is, Williams is about to be exposed. Headed to Cleveland and their 3-4 defense, he will be asked to play defensive end. And as he demonstrated time and again with the Packers when asked to swing outside, he will be over matched by the better offensive tackles in the league. His pass rushing prowess comes inside, where his quick first step gives him an edge against the slower interior offensive lineman. Even there, if a lineman can get his hands on Williams, it’s all over. (See: Championship, NFC).
So good luck with that, Cleveland. And good riddance to Williams.
