Good Chance Packers Open 2012 Season Against The Giants

A matchup featuring the last two Super Bowl champions and the reigning Super Bowl and regular season MVPs could very well be too good for the NFL to pass up.

With the Giants winning Super Bowl XLVI, there's a very good chance the Green Bay Packers will be opening their 2012 season on the road in MetLife Stadium.

By virtue of the Giants' first place finish in the NFC East, they are slated to play both the San Francisco 49ers and the Packers, both of which would be compeling matchups for the opening of the season. However, the Giants play the 49ers in San Francisco while they play the Packers at home.

There's always a chance the NFL could put the Cowboys or even the Saints (the NFC East plays the NFC South next year) in the opening game against the Giants, but you would have to think the appeal of having the last two Super Bowl champions, along with the reigning Super Bowl and regular season MVPs in Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers, would be too good a matchup for the league and NBC to pass up.

Packers fans should know soon enough. The league typically releases the regular season schedule sometime in April and the opening matchup is usually set a few weeks in advance of the formal announcement.

If that's the case, here's hoping we break the trend of defending Super Bowl champions winning the first game of the season.

Naw - As much as I'd love it, NYG/Cowgurls would kill it in ratings more than NYG/GB. The NFL NEVER loses a chance to feature that terrible team with a star on their heads.

This coming from someone who lives in Austin - and knows full well how much the Cowboys don't deserve all the attention they .

I would have agreed with you until this year when the Saints were locked in to play the Packers. My bet was on the Bears, since they were a division rival and had just played the NFC Championship Game the season before.

I think having the two previous Super Bowl winners square up has trumped everything else.

You forget that it was the Packers, not the Cowboys, who played in the most watched Super Bowl of all time.

Meh. A lot of general interest fans, not solid fans, are Cowboys fans.

They are dumb. They are obnoxious. But they make the NFL more money than any other team. Jerrah's in idiot GM, but he's a smart businessperson.

As a result, I'd bet it's an NFC Least rematch in week 1.

Will be a fun match-up.

A bit surprised there are so many suggesting last nights SB was a 'classic'. Up until the last 5 minutes of the game that was a poorly executed, ugly game from both teams. At that point, I couldn't even name a worthy MVP candidate on the Patriots squad if they won, and only Weatherford for the Giants.

Perry Fewell is a magician. That back 7 for the Giants isn't very talented, yet they locked it down since week 15.

Only reason this is considered classic is that the NYG won and the NY media will hail anything that city does as the greatest ever. Most media members are taught now to write/speak only in superlatives.

agreed. as a Wisconsinite forced to live just north of NYC for the last 6 years, i've grown so sick of the centrism/exaggeration.

- all i heard about in the local pregame garbage was about how eli and tom coughlin were canton bound and how coughlin and eli were the greatest coach and qb in giants history (if they won - if they lost, the fickle new yorkers would no doubt flop back to their demands of a regime change)

- every radio personality immediately deemed the tyree catch from a few years ago "the greatest play in superbowl history" -- it wasn't even a touchdown, it was a flailing hail-mary feat of incredible luck on both ends. (ice-bowl qb sneak anyone?)

- in non-sports examples - every winter storm (snow) is the GREAT NOREASTER OF ______ (insert year). They close schools out here the DAY BEFORE at the mere possibility of 3-5 inches.

- the number of people out here that have never been further than 50 miles from NYC is astounding - in small rural towns in Montana, people don't leave because they don't have the money to leave, or because they're running the family business, etc. in NYC, people don't leave because they think the rest of the country is farmland, and there aren't any stores or restaurants or roads - i can't count the number of times i've heard people say "why would i WANT to live anywhere else?"

midwesterners are often proud of their region, but without the uninformed arrogance i see here. i've lived in 4 different regions, there are great things about most places you could live (except maybe east st. louis... unless you're into dope and murder), and i can't wait to get back to the midwest.

new yorkers are trained from birth that the rest of the country isn't worth their precious time, that it's reasonable to spend 2 hours commuting 35 miles every day from their suburban 1 bedroom condo that they bought for $250,000, and that it's okay for every single pizza parlor to offer the exact same menu with the exact same cardboard pizza recipe, and the exact same non-descript grumpy tough-guy working behind the counter. i'm just glad i know better.

sorry. that kind of fell out of me.

don't mean to write off native new yorkers entirely, of course. they're not all arrogantly clueless about the rest of the country.

just most of them. plus the rest of them.

but it's too bad they'll never enjoy george webb's, or squeaky badger cheese curds, or marty's pizza, or a friendly cashier, or a real brat, or cudahy salami for $4/lb (not $10/lb for boarshead bullshit), or really wide highway lanes, or a proper friday fish fry, or pontoon boats on a lake, or merkts.

huh. i'm realizing all this pent up frustration is really about missing all the really wonderful unhealthy food from my childhood. did the german immigrants just skip NY altogether?

Kind of a yawner, for 55+ minutes. Glad it's done, the off-season is now officially here, kinda exciting, almost like a kid anticipating Christmas, with the draft and what's sure to be an action packed free agency period for the G&G. Maybe not the last one.

Great! I hope we lose, feel terrible, and get off to a lame 4-4 start.

That's obviously our best chance to get hot down the stretch, finish 11-5, and win two road games on the way to the Super Bowl.

Kind of kidding, but seriously I don't even know how to feel about early season games anymore. Is it even clear whether having the Pack come out the gates hot is a good thing???

I thought the game was a good one. No video game scores which is a nice change. The tackling from both teams was extremely crisp. Maybe our Packers could learn a thing or two from watching the game.

3 seasons ago i learned that the preseason means absolutely zero.

2 seasons ago i learned that the team that's hot at the end of the year has the best chance to win the sb.

this season i learned that the regular season means zip.

i have a new philosophy. play your ass off until a playoff spot is secured. once a spot is locked - rest everyone until the last two games of the season. at this time play everyone (threat of injury be damned).

if your team isn't running into the playoffs you're not gonna win shit.

the first game of next season means next to nothing.

oh and if it takes you until the last 2 weeks of the season to actually lock up that playoff spot... EVEN BETTER!
