Game Recap: Packers offense falls flat late in Atlanta

The Packers put together an excellent 2nd and 3rd quarter, but couldn't seal it in a 25-24 loss to the Falcons.

A banged-up Packers team went into Atlanta and came close, but not close enough. Without top players Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, and David Bakhtiari, the Packers' Offense still moved the ball and scored over 20 points, but late in the game, that all kind of collapsed.

At first, it seemed like no top weapons, no problem. The Packers got some good production out of their young receivers which resulted in their first career touchdowns. But late in the game when it counted the most, the Packers were missing these players. Lack of productivity on offense unfortunately affected the defense as well. When the offense went three and out, this left the defense with little rest and the Falcons' rushing attack ensured they paid for it.

The Packers had a great 2nd and 3rd quarter on offense, and the defense was able to hold the Falcons to only 12 points. But poor execution in the fourth quarter just let it all fall to the ground giving this young team their first loss of the season.

Let's get to the recap:

First Quarter:

The Packers started their first play of the game with a little excitement calling a flea flicker intended for Dontayvion Wicks that was called for pass interference as Wicks was taken down by the defender before the ball even got there. That penalty placed the Packers at the Atlanta 30. However, it was all backward from there as the Packers weren’t able to do anything with the good field position. A false start and a tipped pass forced the Packers to an Anders Carlson field goal attempt. But then more trouble ensued with a delay of game call forcing the ball out of field-goal range leading to a Danny Whelan punt. A big penalty was gifted, but the Packers were unable to capitalize.

After the rough first drive by the offense, the defense followed up when Rasul Douglas made a huge interception early on in the Falcons' first drive. The ball was tipped high in the air and Douglas made a leaping grab to put the ball back in the hands of the Packers offense. However, the Packer's Offense once again was unable to capitalize as they went three and out, topped off by a big sack of Jordan Love by Kaden Elliss. Again, Danny Whelan punts it away giving the ball back to the Falcons with 10:33 left in the first quarter. It was seen early that Rasheed Walker was not off to a good start in his first game as the starter replacing David Bakhtiari, giving up the sack on that drive completely whiffing on his assignment.

The Packers' defense on the following Atlanta drive had several chances to put the Falcons away on third down, but just couldn’t contain them. After the Falcons offense was able to take the ball down to the Green Bay 1-yard line, Green Bay‘s defense held firm with a big run stuff on second down, and a forced incompletion on third. After a false start was called against the Falcons offense on a fourth and goal conversion attempt, the Falcons lined up for a field goal and got the first points of the game going up 3-0 with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.

On the Packers' third drive of the game, they came out and finally looked like they were starting to cook with a few good passes from Jordan Love to Romeo Doubs and Luke Musgrave. On third down, Jordan Love broke out a 24-yard run, showing his mobility to get the Packers into the red zone for the first time in the game. This would wind down the clock in the first quarter as the offense would walk their way to the other side of the field to start the second.

Second Quarter:

The Green Bay offense started the second quarter in the red zone driving for their first score. After a short run by AJ Dillon and a pass to Luke Musgrave, it was believed AJ Dillon had gained the first down on third but the ball was marked short. Matt LaFleur challenged the call and was successful leading to a first and goal from the Falcons 9 with 13:40 remaining in the half. On the first play, following the challenge, Jayden Reed took the ball into the end zone off a jet sweep pass for his first career touchdown and the Packers were on top 7-3 with 13:33 remaining in the first half.

The Packers seemed like they might’ve forced a three and out on the Falcons following drive but a big pass on third down from Desmond Ridder to Drake London continued the drive to the Falcons 34-yard line. Atlanta drove into Packers territory, but their drive ended on a failed 4th down attempt when Jaire Alexander nearly had a gifted interception but couldn’t hold on. Alexander likely was celebrating in the end-zone had he reeled that one in but instead the Packers took over at their own 41 with 8:51 left in the half.

The Packers started their following drive unfortunately without Elgton Jenkins at left guard, as he was questionable to return with a knee injury. Jenkins did not return to the game and was replaced by Royce Newman. They came out cruising though with a good mix of run and passing success as they pushed the ball into the red zone. Unfortunately, that’s where the drive stalled though, as they were unable to reach pay dirt this time around settling for a 33-yard field goal by Anders Carlson to extend the lead to 10-3 with 3:06 remaining in the half. The third down attempt was a pinpoint throw to the end-zone by Jordan Love intended for Dontayvion Wicks. But it was a good play by the defender to force the field goal.

The Falcons started their next drive with 3:06 remaining in the half and drove down the field in an attempt to get some points before halftime. The Packers nearly had a stop before the Falcons reached the end-zone but they converted on fourth down extending the drive. Then, with 16 seconds left in the half, Desmond Ridder connected with Drake London in the end zone. This would have tied the game but the extra point by Younghoe Koo was missed putting the score at 10-9 with the Packers on top and this is how it would end up heading into the locker room to end the half.

Third Quarter:

The Falcons started the third quarter with the ball. The tale of this drive ended up being dropped passes. Coincidentally, for both sides. Falcons receivers just couldn’t seem to hold onto the ball when it came their way, and neither could Quay Walker as he dropped an interception thrown right into his hands. Nonetheless, Atlanta was forced to punt giving Green Bay the ball for their first drive of the second half.

The Packers then came out on their first drive moving the ball right into Falcons territory featuring some Romeo Doubs toe drag swag for a first down to the Falcons 38. Then Jordan Love connected with Dontayvion Wicks for a 32-yard touchdown giving Wicks his first career score. An Anders Carlson extra point put the score at 17-9 with 10:31 remaining in the third quarter.

On the following drive with the Falcons' offense taking over, the Packers' defense didn’t get the memo to show up, and the Falcons drove right into Green Bay territory, mostly on the ground. Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier combined for 49 yards rushing on this drive, draining the Packers' defense. The drive was then capped off by a Mack Hollins touchdown catch in the back of the end-zone from Desmond Ridder. Or was it? Mack Hollins’ heels were out of bounds after his toes tapped. The play was then challenged and ruled incomplete. After the overturned TD, a sack on Desmond Ridder from Kenny Clark forced the Falcons to settle for a field goal putting the score at 17-12 with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter.

With the Packers taking over, on the first play of the drive Jordan Love targeted Romeo Doubs downfield but he was interfered with by Trey Flowers drawing the flag and putting the ball at the Atlanta 35. The Packers then drove into the red zone with a big run by AJ Dillon and a nice first down catch by Jayden Reed taking the Packers offense to first and goal from the Atlanta 10. Jayden Reed was then hit again wide open by Jordan Love for the touchdown bringing the score to 24-12 with 0:56 remaining in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

On the following drive for the Falcons, they continued to make it a game ushering in the fourth quarter. Highlighted by a reverse flea flicker when Ridder found Mack Hollins deep for a 45-yard pass to the Packers’ 12-yard line, the Falcons were again threatening. They capped it off with a Desmond Ridder keeper as he ran it into the end-zone to make it a five-point game with the Packers up 24-19 with 11:48 remaining in the game.

This, unfortunately, was when the Packers offense went stale following up the Falcons' scoring drive with a three-and-out. Two incompletions and a short run by AJ Dillon forced the Packers to punt. Not a good answer by the Packers and they gave the ball right back to a hot Atlanta offense.

A face mask on Green Bay off the punt gave Atlanta their best starting field position of the game, beginning the drive at their 35-yard line. A huge catch by Bijan Robinson took the ball down to the Green Bay 24 with 8:54 remaining in the game. The Packer's defense was able to get the stop though from that point leading to a Falcons field goal bringing the score to 24-22 Packers with 8:10 remaining in the game.

Yet again, on the following drive for the Packers, they looked like they could’ve hit a first down, but fell just short on yet another three and out, having to punt the ball away to the Falcons being only up by two with 6:07 remaining. This drive was the worst possible outcome in such a close game especially with the defense getting little rest. The offense was doing the defense no favors as they failed to get a first down at all in the fourth quarter. Possibly a little more rest would've helped the defense along.

With the Packers' defense hitting the field gassed, the Falcons' offense certainly took advantage moving the ball right into the red zone. They were able to drain the clock down to 1:01 left in the game when the Falcons settled for a Field Goal and converted putting the score at 25-24 Falcons with 0:57 seconds remaining in the game.

It was now time to see if the Packers could drive down for a score with zero timeouts in their pockets and less than a minute to play. Once again though, the Packers just could not even get a first down. Three incompletions brought on fourth down. It was then that it appeared Jordan Love had hit Samori Toure for the conversion, but later the play was reviewed, and found that Toure did not have possession. The game was over as the Falcons took over and kneeled the ball to wind out the clock.

Offensive Player of the Game:

Last week, I wanted to give this award to Jordan Love. This week, I think I'm doing it. Today Jordan Love brought his touchdown to interception total from 3 to 0, to 6 to 0 on the season. The Packers Quarterback is showing signs of why this organization had so much confidence in him to take over. He also got the chance to show off his rushing capabilities on a nice 24-yard run in the second quarter. The panic just isn't there with Jordan Love, for the second straight game, he looked very comfortable in the pocket. The only improvement is that he needs to make his reads possibly a little quicker. There were several receivers open in situations that could've given this game a different result. He'll be kicking himself as he watches film this week but that's all part of being a young QB.

Defensive Player of the Game:

There wasn't a true standout on defense in this game. But, if I had to pick one I'm going to take Rasul Douglas. His interception early in the game was a highlight and he had two more passes defended. He had four solo tackles on top of this, and there weren't many moments where I saw him give up a big play so he's getting the award this week.

What Went Right:

I have to give a huge compliment to the offensive line. Missing both David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins early on was a concern. However, you wouldn't know it as they only gave up one sack and three quarterback hits. Jordan Love may have been hurried a few extra times, and the running game possibly could've gone better with those two in the lineup, but for the most part, the line held firm and kept the offense in the game.

What Went Wrong:

My first "what went wrong" is going to the fourth-quarter offense. After looking pretty good spreading the ball around, suddenly we couldn't get a first down to save our lives. We had many opportunities where it seemed like we could've converted but the offense just did not get it done at all in the fourth quarter and it essentially decided the game. Possibly one drive into the red zone in the fourth quarter could've drained some clock, given the defense a rest, and ended it even if it resulted in a field goal.

My second goes to the run defense. It's the same old song and dance for this defense again getting gashed on the ground. Atlanta's rushing attack produced 211 yards. I will refer back to the above statement that this defense didn't get any rest help from the offense, so, that could've contributed. But all in all this defense is too stacked up front to be continually knocked out by the run.

Next week the Packers will enjoy their first regular season game from the comfy confines of Lambeau Field. The New Orleans Saints will be entering Green Bay fresh off a shortened week after taking on the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football in Charlotte. The Packers will see some familiar faces in former running back, Jamaal Willams, and former tight end, Jimmy Graham. The Saints boast one of the best defenses in the league, as well as a dangerous receiving tandem in Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and veteran Michael Thomas. It should be a good test for this young team as they look to pull off another win. Hopefully, they can get back to their winning ways in Green Bay as they will have to turn around a short week back on the following Thursday against Detroit.

The biggest offensive screw ups were the failure to call a time out in the very first drive and Myers failure to snap on the 4th, for whatever reason.

On the other hand, the D looked eerily like the D of last year against hood teams and particularly ones with both air and ground threats. Robinson is good, but 175 yards at 5 yards a clip when we knew it was coming is redolent if the Eagles last year. A game that should have ended Barry’s tenure.

It sounds like Jenkins may have an MCL sprain. That’s a month to 6 weeks in the good end. Looks like Newman will be playing again.

What was the rotation at LT? Don’t we know who we want? Pick one and let them settle, not make the challenge harder on both.

What Went Wrong:
Nah, first and last is run defense. At half they already had 107 yds at 5.9 per. Special back Bijan Robinson at 72 and 8 per. Continued in 2nd half. Led to 30:15 TOP to 23:45. 211 rushing yds - 84 in favor of Falcons. 27 1st downs to 17, 15 to 4 rushing. 446 overall yds to 224. That's not winning football.

Falcons ran over 30+ more plays.....That's a lot of time for the defense being worn down on the field too long. The offense didn't make them get out of the run game. 2 dropped INT's. Without BAK and Jenkins....We can only hope our AHC takes over the defense and some bodies on offense make a healthy appearance. We need the Colts RB "NOW" Gute.... But, even he wouldn't start till after game #4....GPG

i'm tired of hearing that the defense gets worn down because of the offense. if the defense were playing well enough they would get some 3 and outs and put the offense back on the field. they get tired BECAUSE they can't stop the other team and get off the field!

Welp, the run defense and tackling were putrid, the run offense was bad, injuries are piling up and it's only week 2. Lots of good to take away from this as we narrowly lost the game despite not having 4 of our best offensive players on the field. AJ Dillon needs to stop falling down behind the LOS, they need to figure out a way to incorporate him effectively. Defense needs to make those interceptions. Sloppy play all around in the 1st and 4th quarters.

Dillon is putting himself on the bench. He has to get the first downs, not hit the deck by an arm tackle.

Stop overrating Watson. In his 19 game career he has 7 touchdowns, 611 yards and a lot of drops.. he and #69 should get to know each other real well in streetclothes. I don’t think either one is highly motivated to actually play.

Crucial play, short yardage
Snap...Dillon gets the ball
Charges forward spots a whole
Trips...oops
Slams into and clips allpro Left Guard Jenkins
Puts him out of the game
still moving forward
stumbles... oops
lunges forward for a yard pick-up
causes five minute referee challenge...

And MLF never got the memo that there were better choices for DC than his buddy Joe Barry. It’s ultimately MLFs responsibility. Just like one (1) opening drive TD in the last 19 games and counting.
It’s a bad staff, blaming a receiver that is always hurt with suspect hands, or a disinterested left tackle is just an excuse. Look back at the entire history of the MLF era. Nothing changes. We are constantly losing winnable games and are always out coached on both sides of the ball.

1. Why didn't they run Wilson more? Took two rep second one went for nine yards. Could of been more if not for missed block.
2. Did Musgrave get hurt? Didn't see him in second half. If he was in the 2nd half it must of been in an out on one drive.
3. Missed Van Ness after he got hurt. Looked like an elbow injury. Could have used his speed on that 4th down Atlanta had when they ran to the right side. Van Ness would of been there a lot quicker than who ever it was.

Other wise it was a good game. They just couldn't close it out. Love looked good but they relied on Dillion way Too much when they could have put someone else in there on the runs off the end. Dillion doesn't have the speed to get to the hole on outside runs

PS: The call on the 3rd down call that was down inches from the 1st down marker was a joke. How did they miss that call?! It should have been 4th an one not inches. His knee was down and the ball was even with the 23 yard line not inches from the 22. BAD call cause I'm sure they would have taken the points to go ahead and that would of left us with plenty of time to get within field goal range to win game. In fact they had the field goal team on the field.

I was shocked by the original spot of the ball and the original call of a 1st down, then doubly shocked that after a replay they called it 4th and inches. I agree, it looked like a bad spot and it may have affected the outcome.

That being said.. the best way to overcome bad officiating / bounce of the ball, is to go out there and perform so well that they can't take it from you. Ultimately, this team failed to do that in the 4th quarter of play.

They will be better down the road for lessons learned in today's loss.

Some examples would be nice.

You're a trash Rodgers-first fan. Go sulk in the Jets fan forums. You're not a Packers fan.

By the way, not only did Jordan Love's season opener 100% outclass Rodgers' last two season openers, but I hope you enjoy knowing that it's 100% official now that Jordan Love will outperform Aaron Rodgers for the entire 2023 season.

Love was good again today, just not world beating. Then again, the same can be said of his catchers. It will take time to clock. Reed seemed to take some steps today. This isn’t on Love, it’s on a D that couldn’t get off the field and LaFleur going into his shell when we were up 12, something he’s always been prone to.

Dillon is not right. I’d look at starting Taylor and Wilson if Jones can’t go. See if a jolt sorts him out as it appears to have Savage. He’s just not hitting the line hard enough often enough.

It's a long season, little buddy, and Love is going to have a successful career.

Were you this hard on your boy, Aaron, when he took the reins from Favre? Many were. Were you part of that crowd when Aaron led the Pack to a 6-10 record? Remember 2008? The season he threw 28 touchdowns and 13 Interceptions? What did he prove that season?

It must have been very painful for you to watch 12 look so lifeless and dead-eyed against Bucs in 2021 and again in the cold against the 49ers in 2022. It was difficult for me watch Rodgers fail, but I'm a Packers fan, and I can get behind our new QB.

Put him on the 4 game PUP list and bring a case to the NFL that he’s medically cleared and still not playing. He’s been talking smack against the league so they won’t have his back. Get some cap relief. Part ways after that. Like Watson , you can’t make an impact in street clothes.

As predicted by me and others, the early season will see struggles by the offense, not helped by Myers' regression at Center and inconsistent QB play. The injuries are no excuse because the offense worked fine early. Let's all just be patient for mid-season. We'll know more by then if the O-squad will sort itself out. But the run game will continue to struggle from a dearth of run-blockers. I admire Gutey's scouting and drafting so much, but even he has his flaws. Drafting OL only for pass-blocking is the root of today's defeat.

The run defense will never be sorted out. Despite bigger and better players, the Barry scheme is to defend the gaps instead of attacking them. The new DC will return to the nut-cracker drill and insist on DL who defeat the OL and preach having the ILB hit the runner nearer the LOS. Passive DEE is losing DEE. The days of the LB colliding with the runner and falling backwards will be over.

I’d be just fine with Doubs, Wicks, Reed , Toure, our tight ends and Jonathan Taylor.

It’s year 5 of the MLF era… and we have one opening drive TD SINCE YEAR 3!
It’s not just Joe Barry.
Three and outs, 4th quarter failures, blah blah blah. And to think there are fans that think Christian Streetclothes Watson is the answer.
I’d rather have traded him along with Dillon for Jonathan Taylor. I’ll take my chances with Doubs, Wicks, Reed , Toure and company.
I just don’t want this staff on the sidelines in 2024. They have a mediocre schedule.. they might get lucky and win 7 or 8 games.. hopefully it won’t save this staff.

Blame the offense? 24 points wins more than you lose based on facts for the last few years.
Blame Joe Barry? I don’t recall him drafting either Gary or Savage whom both looked as lost as last year’s Easter egg resulting in points the other way. Is #10 the answer? I’m not so sure but to me it’s certain he is not the problem right now. Nor is the HC or DC (whom I do not wish to endorse overall). We have a front office that is not able to discern defensive draft help and nothing on the field can fix that.

tell me which DC for what team drafts their players...that's lame. good DC's shape their defense around the players they get and most field good defenses year after year because they're not so set on what they WANT to do but what they CAN do. most of them have maybe 2 or 3 pro bowl type players and a bunch of average players. it's the scheme they use to make the most of the pro bowl players so that the average ones can be more successful.

Seriously? I think the draft class looks good. We have talent.
We also have one opening drive TD in the last 19 games. Who is that on? Who hired Drayton? Who hired Barry?
Who is responsible for the low energy teams we field? All the 3 n outs at crunch time?
Except for the Bears , we are out coached every single week.
By the way , in those last 19 games, to go along with one opening drive TD, we have 12 losses. 8 wins, and three of those are against the Justin fields bears.

I have no doubt the players will put in a fine effort in each game this season. The Ws and Ls is not what I am concerned with right now. It is accountability and growth with each game.

Isn't there someone on the coaching staff who is watching the play clock and calling a timeout if #10 isn't aware of it racing to 00?

The rookies have played well for the most part. There will be mistakes and missed opportunities. It will come with more playing time.

I believe in Gute and am happy the arrow is pointing up. We just need to coach up the talent. I am tired of the D getting gashed in the run game. It seems like that has been our Achilles heal for quite some time. The injuries to key players can be frustrating but it is what it is.

We still have an exciting season ahead of us.

You can pinpoint every game or just look at the bigger picture of MLF now in his fifth year. Nothing improves . One opening drive TD in 19 games, same mistakes, same low energy, same excuses, 8 wins in that time, three of the eight against the worst team in football. He had stood behind three of the worst assistants in packers history ( Mennenga, Drayton and Barry)
The window of opportunity in the NFL is brief.. MLF does not deserve a sixth year… barring a miracle that would be hard to imagine given his track record.

Personally, I'd encourage anyone reading this comment to R.E.L.A.X (joke intended).

The Packers lost WR1, RB1, LT1, LG1 and still got pipped at the post. They weren't blown off the park.

Are they Superbowl bound? possibly not - but they aint the bears, and that counts for something!

There's equally lots to like - and things to fix.

Darnell Savage got exposed - don't doubt the effect Jerry Gray (remember him - he only coached him for 4 years!!!) had in exposing that one.

And Love called the wrong audible on that critical 4th down sneak in the 4th.

I'm going to need to watch more of the Falcons to see how good their O-line plays, but they and Robinson were a cohesive unit - you have to recognize (and learn) from that.

Lastly - everone else in the NFC North lost - so the Pack aren't even a game behind everyone else.

On to the Saints at home next week!

WR1 is a street clothes guy. He has 7 touchdowns in his 19 game career and 611 yards. And he drops a lot of passes. He’s fragile.
If you think he’s somehow going to stay healthy and become dominant, well that’s the same as expecting Matt LaFluer to field a smart , aggressive team someday after not doing that for now his 5th year.
And get used to LT1 sitting next to Watson. It seems he lost his edge after 12 left and is blaming Astro turf.
The line afforded Love plenty of time yesterday.
The main culprits were the usual suspects.. LaFluer, Barry, Dillon, Campbell, and for good measure Alexander played like shit.

I would say falling apart late would be with under 4 minutes to play. They fell apart in the first and fourth quarters.
This is a hallmark of a MLF coached team. Year 5 and one opening drive TD SINCE YEAR THREE!!
Now that’s progress!
Obviously Barry sucks, but LaFluer hired him and retains him.
Fifth year, no energy, no answers, it’s not improving. And it’s not because Watson is hurt.
It’s because he’s always hurt. His 7 touchdowns, 611 yards in his 19 game career don’t mean a thing. He hasn’t even played enough to know if his bad hands improved.
MLF is the problem.. everything else is an excuse.

We screwed. Words out 69 won't play on fake turf. WTF! When are players calling the shots. Now no team will touch 69. We're paying a ton bucks for that 300 pounder to sit on his ass. Another corner we painted ourselves into. Damn! But, GPG just the same.

I cannot help but to think this game is a lot different with their full complement of offensive players on the field. Two pro bowlers on the o line out, Jones out, Watson out. It is amazing that they scored as much as they did.
The defense needed to capitalize on the int opportunities they had and just did not. To complain about one of the top 3-4 rushing teams in the league being successful at running on this defense I think is a little crazy. It's what Atlanta does week in, week out....they just needed to make the young QB pay for mistakes and it didn't happen.

Yes, the offense failed in Q4. No doubt. But its the D that truly lost this game! To write an article like this just takes blame away from the D. One comment suggested that our D looked much like last year? No shit Sherlock! We couldn’t stop the run from team that is run oriented. And, of course, we had to play classic Joe Barry soft coverage because, well, we did have the lead?

When will the insanity of Joe Barry as DC finally end?
