Future Packer Jeron Johnson?

Boise State safety Jeron Johnson is featured is today's Future Packers series looking at one of the day's top college football games.

Saturdays are made for college football. So here at Cheesehead TV we try to honor that tradition while keeping an eye toward the future and look at some of the players who will eventually be playing on Sundays.

Will the players featured in this series really become Green Bay Packers? It's a long shot. Instead, consider it more of an NFL Draft preview.

Today's future Packer...

Boise State safety Jeron Johnson

The Broncos are hosting their first-ever nationally televised game in primetime on the smurf turf in Boise, Id. ESPN's College Gameday crew is in town to add to the atmosphere.

Boise State is very, very good as usual, but after winning the season opening game against Virginia Tech and then watching the Hokies subsequently lose to FCS school James Madison, their hopes to reach the national championship game took a hit.

Today, Boise not only needs to beat Oregon State, they need to do it in convincing fashion. And to do that, they need to bottle up the Beavers' dangerous Rodgers brothers.

That's where the hard-hitting Johnson comes into play. The safety will have double duty trying to take away a little bit of running back Jaquizz Rodgers in the run game and wide receiver James Rodgers in the pass game.

"Jeron Johnson (5-11, 194, Sr.) has been named second-team All-WAC two years in a row, which is fascinating as he was Boise State’s leading tackler both seasons," writes Joey Zager of BroncoCountry.com, part of the Scout.com network. "Johnson had 91 tackles last year with six passes broken up and four interceptions. Johnson is a disruptive hitting machine who is one of the best open field tacklers in the country."

He'll need to be a good open field tackler in order to take down the jitter-bug like Jaquizz Rodgers. But Johnson has shown he could do it in the past.

In the season opening victory against Virginia Tech with Johnson playing at less than 100%, he led the Broncos with 11 tackles against one of the better running quarterbacks in the nation in Tyrod Taylor and one of the most impressive backfields in the nation with Ryan Williams and Darren Evans.

At 5-11, Johnson is the same height as Packers safety Nick Collins but is about 20 pounds less. In order to withstand the rigors of the NFL, Johnson is probably going to need to put on weight without losing any speed, which should be a challenge.

While he's one of the top safeties in the nation (Scott Wright has him ranked as the no. 2 overall safety), Johnson is not a surefire first-round draft choice.

With Atari Bigby set to become a free agent at season's end, the Packers are in the need of depth at the safety position even though they're okay with their starters.
