Future Packer Casey Matthews?

The younger brother of Packers linebacker Clay Matthews leads No. 1 ranked Oregon into USC, Clay's alma mater, for one of the day's biggest showdowns.

Saturdays are made for college football. So here at Cheesehead TV we try to honor that tradition while keeping an eye toward the future and look at some of the players who will eventually be playing on Sundays.

Will the players featured in this series really become Green Bay Packers? It's a long shot. Instead, consider it more of an NFL Draft preview.

Today's future Packer...

Oregon Senior Linebacker Casey Matthews

I've gotten a couple requests to do a "Future Packer" feature on Casey because of the obvious connection with his brother Clay, who plays for the Packers. This was as good a time as any as Oregon travels to USC for a big-time Pac-10 tilt, Clay's alma mater and the site of College Gameday.

Unlike Clay, Casey is an inside linebacker (although Clay has lined up on the inside on occasion this season, mostly to blitz). What they have in common is that they're both instinctive players with a nose for the football, a result of good bloodlines.

Casey was Oregon's second-leading tackler with 81 stops a year ago, a season that also earned him second-team All-Pac-10 honors.

He's kept up his nose-for-the-football ways this season with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, part of the reason the Ducks lead the nation with 25 turnovers.

Creating so many turnovers is one reason the Ducks have been so successful this season, although it can be argued that the only team with a pulse they've played so far this season has been Stanford.

Several observers maintain that Oregon's offense is better than its defense, but statistics don't lie. Oregon has allowed only 23 points in the second half of games all season long and only 7 in the fourth quarter.

Winning the turnover battle will be a key in today's showdown with USC. The Trojans' best player this season has been quarterback Matt Barkley, and if Matthews can harass him, it would definitely improve the Ducks' chances for a victory.

Whether it's getting to Barkley in the offensive backfield on a well-timed blitz or intercepting him in pass coverage, Matthews can have an impact on the outcome of the game with a momentum-changing play.

The younger brother doesn't figure to go in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft like his older brother, but Casey should still be able to make a living in the NFL.

Casey is ranked somewhere between the 5th to 10th best inside linebacker in this year's draft class, likely making him a mid- to late-round draft choice, although his bloodlines could improve his draft stock.

At 6-1 and 235 pounds he's slightly undersized, but the Packers don't mind their inside linebackers a little on the smaller side. A.J. Hawk is similarly only 6-1, and Desmond Bishop is listed as being 238 pounds.

Packers fans would no doubt love to see the brothers on the same team, and while the possibility is slim, it makes for a good story.

Nice post, but can we please stop talking about "bloodlines"? It reminds me of eugenics.

Here is my updated "dream draft" for 2011:
1. Jeremy Beal OLB Oklahoma
2. Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
3. Kendall Hunter RB Oklahoma State
3. (comp pick) Rashad Carmichael CB Va Tech
4. Casey Matthews ILB Oregon
5. Colin Kapernick QB Nevada
6. Tom Donahue P Iowa

I loooove Niles Paul (WR/RS Nebraska) as a replacement for James Jones, but I don't know where to slot him. And I'm really tempted to slot a RB into round one (Ryan Williams or Shane Vereen) but I think pass rush is a greater need. Your thoughts?

I've watched Gabe Carimi to think that he's not nearly as good a prospect as many think him to be. He's more of a run-game mauler, which has its value. But he gets beat off the edge far too often, and as often as the Packers pass, I don't think he'd be a good fit.

I like a lot of your other picks, Tim. I really like the Beal first-round projection. He seems like a future stud.

How about Darius Morris from Temple? Or Demarcus Love from Arkansas? I think Nate Solder would be the best fit, but I doubt he falls to the 2nd.

I think this is the weakest OL class in a long time... Don't think we'll find solutions to the OL in next year's draft...

I like it! Addresses our most glaring needs, all the way down. I'd take Carimi in the second round, but as Brian notes he would be a stretch in the first. Carimi on the right side and Bulaga on the left, and our tackles for the future are set. Lang as utility man/replacement for Colledge if he leaves. Sitton right guard for the next ten years. Niiiice....

Not to sound like an ass. But it's actually Ryan Donahue Punter from Iowa. But let me add this is a great suggestion he's had an amazing college career as a punter and it's a position that has needed a consistent player in these past years for Green Bay but never gotten it. Excellent recommendation!

Another person you may look at as mentioned below in a comment. Christian Ballard, if you watch an Iowa game take your eyes off the 1st round Adrian Clayborn and look at this guy, 6-5/297 Defensive Lineman with a nose for the ball and an innate ability to cause turnovers.

Question also: Were you thinking Colin Kaepernick as a draft choice to mold as a true QB? I feel like he's not a true NFL prospect at that position. Maybe a returner? We definitely need one of those if you ask me.

I can't think of anything happier than for my college QB (Kaepernick) and Lil' Bro Casey to play for the Packers. Here's hoping.

Bloodlines or not,if he has the same determination as Clay,he'll be long gone by the 4th,so be prepared to make a move if you want him.

It would seem to me that with Clays success somebody would grab little bro early hoping it pays off for them the way older Matthews has paid off for the Pack.

Don't you think the Packers would shy away from having brothers on the same team? I have a feeling TT wouldn't want that..what would happen if the Packers had to cut Casey? I'm sure Clay wouldn't exactly be thrilled..

The Packers had a pair of brothers just a year or two ago, one was an offensive lineman. The name escapes me at the moment, but precedent has already been set in that regard.

Jeremy & Orrin Thompson. As much time as you put into covering & following this team & you don't know that? Too funny. Keeps things in perspective with this site considering you're the resident Packer expert...

Anyway, good luck doing what Brian does.

Bob McGinn said something almost identical to this in a chat not too long ago, about a name escaping him. I'll let him know you think he's a hack too, Pack Fan.

So not only does Brian not have total instantaneous recall of every obscure Packer player, he's also ripping off Bob... pretty sad Brian.

Really though Pack Fan, that's pretty douchy of you. Seriously.

Anybody else watching this Oregon game? It looks like SC only has 8 defenders at times. How do you get that wide open???

I'm over the undersized ILB's on our team. It's time we get a 'thumper', maybe somebody who occasionally doesn't get dragged for three yards after initial contact (yes, I'm talking about Hawk AND Barnett). It would be nice to see a head on collision at the LOS and actually have the RB go backwards for once.

... i like to set up my defense thinking that there is a MLB and ILB in a 3-4 and usually the MLB is the undersized one adn ILB is the bigger one.. i dont think casey would start as a rookie... so you could let barnett last year or two..(assuming he has that long) and get caseys weight up a little to try and turn him more into a clay.. (clay was a lot smaller his rookie year as to now) and then casey would be able to take over for barnetts spot.. as for ilb i dont know how long we will have hawk but i would like for his replacement to be a bigger guy.. but we really need to get new players for both of the inside linebackers so having casey couldnt hurt..

he would have to grow the flow out like his brother.. nd if hawk is still playing hed grow the flow too..
the packer defense will be flowtastic

Iowa's Christian Ballard would be a good value pick-up (DT/DE 6"5, 295), as would Jeremiah Hunter (4-3 OLB moved inside).

I am unrealistically hoping for Mark Ingram (if he goes). Hey, his dad played in GB.

The first round will also have a number of good receivers. WR is no longer a position I think we're good at on Draft day. GB's core has been disappointing this year and it's time to freshen things up. Julio Jones, Michael Floyd, or Jonathan Baldwin could both be available.

I like Bruce Carter at OLB if he falls in the first and Von Miller at OLB if he falls in the second.

Ingram would be sooooo perfect. I actually don't think it would be completely improbable, since RBs always drop in round one. Maybe his 40 time isn't that great and he drops into the 20s...

Ryan Donahue from Iowa- would be a good punter in the NFL...That would be a great pick for the Packers...but Masthay is playin good ball for the moment....I also like Collin Franklin from Iowa State..But we got plenty of tight ends
