He thought back over his time playing the game, earning the starting job with Mike, that Raiders game after he lost Big Irv, the playoffs in '96, record after record after record, the big throws he never thought about that sometimes came off and sometimes, well, not so much. And then 2008 with the Jets. How could he have done that to the team? The more he thought about it, the worse it became. --- He parked the tractor in the shed, closed the door and turned towards the house. Through the front door and past Deanna reading her book on the couch. He picked up the phone and dialled a familiar number. A deep voice on the other end of the line gruffly answered and Brett began to apologise. He began to say sorry for the circuses he'd created, the continual search for attention, the unreasonable demands, the drama and the fuss. The impossible position he'd put the team in. He couldn't take it back but he could make it up. Is there anything, he asked, anything he could do to make it up?
