Favre Proving Packers Point?

He wants to play football, unless he doesn’t.

It’s hard not to be sympathetic to Favre after reading his text message to Ed Werder of ESPN (HT: Brats & Beer):

There isn’t a perfect solution to this, but Mark Murphy is at least trying. We know what they want and where I stand. His solution, although awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end.

My intentions have been to play, and with Green Bay. They say no, so I still want to play in this division for obvious reasons, which I made clear to management. If they won’t let me play in Green Bay, let me play against you. That’s where I am.

Hard not to view Favre as a wounded warrior who ‘just wants to play football’ – the problem I keep running up against in my head is – If your first choice was to come back and play with the Packers, why was Bus Cook contacting the Vikings in April?

Because Bus Cook is an agent. No soul, right?

Because Favre knew he still had it, knew TT/Packers knew he still had it, and knew TT/Packers would never want to give their bitter rival the benefit of his services? It seems Favre has used the Viques as leverage to make TT/Packers play him in GB.

However, if he DOES take the money and mow, I’ll be more disappointed in him than if he suited up in purple.

I would be more sympathetic if he hadn’t demanded his release and then thrown everyone in the Packers organization under the bus. And if he hadn’t said he wanted to play against them if he couldn’t play for them.

If he really wanted to come back to Green Bay he should have said “I want to come back and I’ll play whatever role you want me to play – even if that means playing backup and restructuring my contract”. But he never could fully commit to coming back and seemed like he threw a tantrum when he couldn’t get his way.

I would respect him more if he took the offer and let this go. It seems fairly clear to me that he’s still not fully committed to playing given that he’s not willing to compromise and this would be a way for the whole situation to end with minimal controversy.
