Favre: Backup
By Aaron Nagler on Jul 12, 2008 with 5 Comments
That’s what Thompson and McCarthy told the AP this morning. They aint releasing him, but he is more than welcome to join the team – as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. That, my friends, is a bold move, almost as bold as Ron Wolf trading a first round pick for a third string quarterback all those years ago.
Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel and Tom Pelissero of the Press-Gazette are scheduled to interview Thompson and McCarthy at 2:00 PM EST and 2:30 PM EST respectivley. It should be interesting to see what the GM and Coach have to say…
UPDATE: Thompson now says his saying Brett could join the Packers “only as a backup” was taken out of context. He’s leaving everything wide open, which is the best way to leave it until we finally hear from Favre himself.

I have been saying all week. Let them duke it out in Camp. Talk about biggest battles in Training Camp.
And I thought it was gonna be Nickelback. Not quarterback.
That’s what I would do. It doesn’t seem like there is enough interest around the league (from non-NFC North teams, that is) for him to make a trade worthwhile. No one really wants to take a risk on a guy who has been acting like a nut job for the past few months.
In my opinion, the best outcome would be for Favre to just stay retired. Telling him that he won’t get traded, won’t get released and will be holding a clip board might be the best way to get him to save what is left of his legacy and just stay retired.
I doubt Brett would accept backup. Other than that I think a trade would be GBs best option. Falcons come to mind. End where he started. Full circle. Better yet… stay retired and stay Green and Gold.
So, I’m thinking that we are close to needing a special edition podcast on this nightmare. As soon as there is some substantive information I hope we hear you discussing it in your wonderful way!
