Door Closed on Packers Trading for Steven Jackson?

Judging by the comments of St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers will not be completing a trade for running back Steven Jackson.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Fisher dispelled any notion of the Rams dealing Jackson.

Also, from the Rams official site:

Fisher also quickly addressed the rumors of a trade of RB Steven Jackson. He said Jackson is “still our running back” and that they aren’t calling anyone to deal him nor are other teams calling about him. It really doesn’t appear Jackson is going anywhere despite the rumors that are out there. Trade deadline is coming before the week is out.

Rumors of the Packers dealing for Jackson began Sunday with ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, who reported that the Rams were fielding offers for their ninth-year running back and the Packers were one team who, at least in the past, had shown interest.

I opined Monday that the chances of Green Bay making such a deal for Jackson or Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams were unlikely.

The NFL’s trade deadline is Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.

Why wouldn’t the Rams wanna move this guy? Holding on to him seems like such a dead end for them.

If given the right offer, they would.

    • Zach Kruse says:

Jackson is the face of that franchise. The season is half over, and they probably don’t assume they are out of it. Think they are giddy about just giving him away?

  2. Bearmeat says:

It would take a high draft pick and a player to pry the Rams fingers off Jackson. TT ain’t about to part with anything about a 4th rounder – so it ain’t happenin.

  3. davyjones says:

If Lynch wasn’t worth a 3rd or 4th rounder to TT, it seems implausible that Pack would part with any more than that….if even close to that. I don’t think Jackson is worth what was gotten for Lynch.

Shame on anybody that thought it was a possibility.

Yeah, cause front office people never try to mislead people about trade rumors while they’re trying to fanagle a deal..

Is it just me or is Saturday the difference this year compared to last? Wells is missed much more than anyone has discussed.

    • Mike says:

Each week I believe that more and more. Not so much in pass pro, but seems to be that way when it comes to the run game. Wells wasn’t a guy to blow people off the line, but more often than not he would have position on his man and negate him from the play. Saturday seems to have issues on just about any run play that calls for him to block someone one on one, as he gets beaten constantly across his face.

Then again, one could argue that we’d be screwed without Saturday, as Wells’ injury may have still happened if he’d resigned. Then we’d be stuck with EDC or someone else at center…

      • Walty says:

A recent article on CHTV shows that Green is averaging over 5 yards per carry when running up the middle while averaging less than 2 on the left side and less than 3 on the right side.

I know Saturday hasn’t been fantastic this year, but these numbers seem to negate what you’re saying.

How refreshing would it be to have Jackson behind number 12 on 3rd and short, every defense would have to honor him when he is on the field. Green looks like he can handle blitz pickup and with a screen in the open field he can make people miss, sounds like Brandon Jackson who was exclusively a 3rd down back, that is what Green is. When Jackson had to do more even as a 2nd draft pick he was shown the door. Benson better get healthy fast because Starks will never be available on a regular basis. Thats the RB position in a nutshell.
