Donald Driver Addresses Hall of Fame Potential

Donald Driver Addresses Hall of Fame Potential

GRAND CHUTE, Wis.--As the franchise's all-time leading receiver, Donald Driver's place in Green Bay Packers history has been cemented.

It's a foregone conclusion Driver will be inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame, a notion further intensified following his rise in popularity from winning ABC's Dancing With The Stars.

But whether he's good enough to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Driver's not sure.

Driver said at his annual charity softball game on Sunday, "I don’t know if the numbers are going to get you in, but I look at it as, you’ve got great guys who haven’t been in the Hall of Fame. Cris Carter, Tim Brown, those guys have all the numbers. I think what separates those guys is those guys don’t have Super Bowl rings. Everybody you look around, they do.

"I’m hoping maybe one day, but I can sit on top of this franchise and nobody ever breaks my records and it stands forever, maybe with what this franchise stands for, maybe that’ll get me into the Hall of Fame. There are great players who played before me, and to be mentioned in the same breath with those guys, I’m fine with that. And if I never get in the Hall of Fame, I’m okay. As long as I get in the Packers Hall of Fame and my name gets around that (Ring of) Honor, and I’ve done everything I can for the fans and this organization."

For comparison's sake, Driver has 735 career receptions for 10,060 yards and 59 touchdowns. Carter has 1,101 for 13,899 and 130 while Brown has 1,094 for 14,934 and 100.

We all love DD. We've talked about the NFL HOF a lot. I have yet to see a convincing argument for why he will make it. I don't think this should even be a topic for discussion unless he blows the barn doors off of the Super Bowl this year.

Yeah, if there's one person I'm rooting for to make it is DD, but, like you said, barring a SB MVP or a stat-leading year coupled with a SB ring, he's not going to Canton.

Even with that he'd be more than a long shot.

Is the HoF a prerequisite to get your number retired by the Packers?

PackersRS's picture

Absolutely. I think even for the ring of honor it is, but I'm not sure.

That's too bad. If anyone deserves that honor -- either to have his number retired or be added to the Ring of Honor -- it's Driver. Tenure, stats, ambassadorship, he did it all.

No HOF and no ring of honor. He's one of the classiest guys around and I'd love to see it happen, I just do not see it happening in a million years. Sorry DD...
