Year:  Sr

Position: Edge rusher

Measurements: 6' 3", 254 lbs,  34 ½” arms

STATS:

Courtesy of Sports-reference.com

General Info:

Hall is a former consensus four-star recruit, who also played basketball and competed in track in high school and also played in the Under Armour All-American Game. He was an early enrollee at Auburn. The former Tiger played a small role as a true freshman, starting two games accumulating just 10 tackles, and 12 pressures. As a Sophomore in 2020 he started three games, but played a lot more putting up 17 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 31 pressures, and 4 sacks. Hall became a full time starter in 2021, and he responded by collecting 30 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 12.5 tackles for a loss, 43 pressures, and 10 sacks. Surprisingly he returned for his senior season in 2022 and was made a team captain, for his final season he collected a career high 43 tackles, 47 pressures, 8 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, his first career interception, and 12 tackles for a loss. The Mississippi native was invited to both the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine.

Positional Skills:

Strengths:

Hall is an athletic freak and it shows on his film, he is able to reach the sideline with ease, and closes space to the quarterback or a running back in the blink of an eye. The former Auburn Tiger also has a massive wingspan, especially for a guy who is just 6’3. Hall has shown that he can play patient. Despite being just 254 he shows impressive strength in shocking offensive linemen back. The Mississippi native shows a quick first step, and is able to slice into the backfield. Hall plays really well in space despite his size, he moves his feet like he weighs 230.  When he gets low he can really bull rush offensive linemen back. The former Tiger has also shown a developing rip move. Hall has some impressive bend where he can really bend the edge. He is in great physical shape and can play a lot of snaps and doesn’t look gassed, and his motor is always running. The former Four-star recruit actually showed he has pretty good hands on his interception against Missouri. Hall also has shown he can drop into zones and cover man.

Weaknesses:

Despite his 34 ½” arms, Hall does not use his arm length to his advantage at times and really needs to use them to disengage with offensive linemen. Hall missed eight tackles this season and 10 in 2021, mostly due to not wrapping up; when attempting a tackle Hall is almost never in control. He has been susceptible to misdirection plays, especially RPOs, and play action fakes where he ends up out of position a lot. For how athletic and strong he is, he gets stuck on offensive linemen too much and lacks any developed of pass rush moves. Hall will get tunnel vision when engaging with offensive linemen and will have backs run right past him without even a glance. The former Tiger doesn’t always stay low and gets rooted out by offensive linemen, or ineffective bull rush reps. In pass rush reps he doesn’t use his bend enough, he mostly tries to bull rush head up on the offensive lineman and almost nothing else despite his size and athleticism indicating he should be using speed to power, developing moves, and bending the edge.

Fit with the Packers:

Derick Hall has tons of upside and potential, but he has never reached it. His pass rush game right now is a complete mess and will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. He has shown flashes, but not enough and very little development. His pass rush plan is almost nonexistent, and the only thing he can do with any consistency is bull rush and offensive tackles just set up for that and he goes nowhere. Hall lacks general awareness as far as what’s going around him and gets fooled by any sort of trick play. He is a two to three-year project, that if he hits he will hit big! But projects like him tend to bust/fail, Gary was the exception to the rule. His floor is that of a career special teamer who gets 5-10 snaps a game on defense, because of this I am not touching him until the 4th or 5th round. He is going to need to go to a team that can be patient with him and will take their time developing him. Green Bay could do that with Enagbare, Gary, and Smith already on the roster; so he would be a good fit in that sense. The odds are that he never reaches his potential.

He is a prospect after Felix...Three year production record. Not a one-year wonder. Good leverage. Long arms. Quick off the ball. The problem is the Packers defensive philosophy. They will need a plug and play guy, since Gary will not be back until November, maybe...

I'm not going to say that's the worst possible outcome, but it might be close... : P

Couple of questions.

Why do we only have 10 picks when it is obvious you traded back? I hope we got like 3 - 1st round picks next year? (Using PFF Draft Simulator)

I traded AR12 for 13 and 42. Traded 13 to the Chargers for 21 and 54. Traded 15 to Ravens for 22 and 86, and a 3rd rounder next year.

21: Deonte Banks CB Maryland - "In a class full of super freaks at corner, Banks may have been the most impressive. He went 4.35 in the 40 and posted a 42-inch vertical and 11-foot-4 broad jump. That's a first-round corner." Per PFF

22: Broderick Jones OT Georgia - "FIRST ROUND - Another year of seasoning could have made Jones a top-five pick. He still may end up close to that range with his dominant physical skill set." Per PFF

42: Darnell Washington TE Georgia - "Washington’s size changes the calculus for defenses. He can be a sixth offensive lineman in the run game while also being a post-up weapon against smaller linebackers in the passing game." Per PFF

45: Cedric Tillman WR Tennessee - "Tillman wins by presenting his quarterbacks with massive windows. He’s going to attack 50-50 balls in a way that will quickly build rapport with his quarterbacks in the NFL." Per PFF "FOURTH ROUND - Tillman's physicality will appeal to teams that demand plus-blockers on the edge, but he's a one-trick route-runner who can play only a few roles." PFF sees him as a 4th round pick, but I think his blocking prowess will put him higher on Gutey's board than other teams.

54: Sydney Brown S Illinois - "SECOND OR THIRD ROUND
Brown is the single best athlete in this safety class. His size will take him off some boards, but his coverage versatility should be coveted. Brown is smooth and explosive in the open field. He has range on the back end and the hips to track receivers in man coverage." Per PFF

78: Andre Carter II OLB ARMY - "FIRST ROUND Carter has a unique athletic skillset that is built to rush the passer against NFL offensive tackles. He just has to be able to threaten them with power first." Analysis by PFF says 1st round, but using their simulator he's ranked at 52 and available at 78, so who knows where he will go.

86: Moro Ojomo DT Texas - THIRD ROUND - Ojomo is a little too limited to go early in the draft, but his next team will get a high-floor run defender wherever he comes off the board." Per PFF

116: Roschon Johnson RB Texas - "Johnson would have been a bell cow anywhere else in the country, and he could still end up one in the NFL." Per PFF

149: Bryce Ford-Wheaton WR West Virginia - 6' 4" 221 LBS 4.38 speed. (MVS Clone IMO, but better coordination and heavier.)

170: Matt Landers WR - Arkansas - 6' 4" 200 LBS 4.37 (MVS Clone number two. Think he is more of a FB player than MVS appears to be, IMO.)

232: Dee Winters LB TCU - 5' 11" 227 LBS 4.49 speed. ST's. Flies to the ball.

235: Hunter Luepke FB NDS - 6' 1" 230 LBS - Fullback who can run, catch, and block.

242: Evan Hull RB Northwestern - 5' 10" 209 LBS - 4.47 speed. ST's. Backup who is smart, tough, can also run, catch, and block.

256: Tavius Robinson OLB Mississippi - 6' 6" 257 LBS 4.66 speed. Developmental OLB who could be a monster in a couple years.

Now, we all know Gutey isn't as smart as I am, so we can't expect this much from him, but we should! ; P

Did not speculate on the Jets "haul" in this mockery. B. Jones and Paris Johnson will be top twelve guys along with the top CBs. I believe most of the QBs are over-rated. I like Levis if I was sniffing one out. A couple of trade downs from 15 to 19, 19 to 22. Use acquired draft capitol to maneuver into round two where the value picks lie. I like Charlie Jones to fill in like a Edelman guy or Wes Welker, Amendola. A guy who gets open in the zones and actually catches the ball. Haener would be the backup QB. They have to roll the dice on Love and hope for the best. Not spending a high pick on a QB.

You know how to pick them Bird. I like almost all of them. I don't know much about Dee Winters, but we need a LB. I would definitely substitute a TE for that FB. We need 2 in this draft and there will be good ones still there late.

Everybody has their favorite WR and its like Xmas because there are so many good ones. Mine are Ford-Wheaton, Landers, Hutchinson, & Iosivas. If this scenario worked and knew we could still get Ford-Wheaton and Landers later I would skip Higgins and double up @ TE for one of the top 5. Either way excellent. We could rebuild both positions in one draft. Our offense would be unstoppable.

Evan Hull is going to be a steal for whoever gets him. Honestly he could replace AJ next year and we wouldn't skip a beat. How big is Roschon? I have seen 6'2 and 6'0. Can he catch good. If he is 6'2 we could trade Jones and Dillon next year before the contracts balloon and while they still have good value. New thunder and lightning. New blood and picks back. perfect.

I keep hammering trading back is the key to this draft being good or great. Great job!

I gave ya a thumbs up, but there's no way I take Tillman that high. I'd take Dawand Jones at #29 before I'd take Tillman in the 1st round. I'd take Darnell Washington at 29 ahead of Tillman, but that's just me.

I've seen Tillman rated in the 2nd to 4th round, but never in the first round. (At least I haven't seen it.)

Why read from these draft sites? Some evaluations were written last summer. I watch the Games and the Film. He was All-SEC in '21. Hyatt got his reps in '22 when he was out with the ankle. He returned strong. He is an NFL receiver, big hands, no drops and pulls down the contested catch. Trained by his father an ex-NFL player. A little of Davante mixed with James Jones. He would be #31-#33, no lower. Bag him.
Tucker Kraft has three years of production. His numbers athletically are the same or better than Washington's. I do not want another Big Dog. A blocking TE can be selected later on. Kraft has the open field ability and the YAC.

Kraft is a sneaky good choice over Washington. Kraft also is a very good blocker.

"The odds are that he never reaches his potential."

They why would we want him?

I'm still stuck on Andre Carter II. Size like that reminds me of Ted Hendricks.

Exactly. Carter II works at improving his game like a Pro’s Pro. He has that level of discipline built-in.

He didn't run at the combine. I watched him play. If he makes it to the 3rd round, (I think Gutey has proven the 3rd is his Achilles heel), so taking Andre Carter II in the 3rd round would change his luck. He does need to get stronger, no doubt, but I think he's a football player and would be feared in a year or two.

Yet he is ranked as an early-to-mid second round prospect by many. But I agree: if he hasn't developed much since his sophomore season, how long is it going to take him to make an impact at the pro level?

Not a very persuasive argument for drafting Derrick Hall. We do not need another mediocre addition to our front four. We need a dynamic playmaker and if that means using a first round pick, so be it. Two players have my attention. 1) Calijah Kancey who is used in the same sentence as Aaron Donald. 2) Adetomiwa Adebaware . Nothing makes a secondary look better than a dominant front four.

All-SEC first team (coaches) in 2022. Second team in 2021 behind the Georgia guys. Would Barry use Kancey like Donald? Adebaware was All -Big Ten 3rd team behind Zach Harrison & Morris (1st team) and Johnny Newton from Illinois.. Van Ness was a second team guy. The DT was Mazi Smith. Benton only cracked 3rd team but has the 3 tech potential with the fast step, I had Benton in the 3rd, some moving him to lower 2nd?

Good points but that was all determined pre combine. Numbers matter. Adebaware is 282 lbs and runs an eye opening 4.49. That is CB speed. He has played all over the D-line and clearly has the highest ceiling for potential. Sometimes you need to risk-it to get the biscuit! Kancey will go higher and if he is there at #15 I would pick him. We also need to stop the run with our front four BEFORE they get to the secondary. Our defense stopping the run was pathetic last year. We also did not have many sacks. The best way to help Love is to get our defense off the field and Love on the field. We have a great running game and great young WRs, I see a major need at TE which would ideally be filled with Darnell Washington. So what is needed is DL/Edge and TE. After that follow BPA principle.

So you would draft Kancey that high simply because some draft people have compared him to Aaron Donald? You could say that about any undersized DT but that's a pretty expensive pick to make. A better comparison would be Mike Daniels, still a good player but not Aaron Donald. Adwbaware looks better and you could move him all over.

We need a run stopper, early I like Mazi Smith or Keanu Benton. Later how about Brodrick from Western Kentucky.

I listen to so called draft experts. I also look first at the combine numbers and then the highlight film. Granted, it is all speculation. Last year I was hoping the Packers would draft the WR from S Dakota which turned out to be a great pick. Clearly a playmaker. There is always some speculation. Based on my humble analysis I would try to draft Adebaware or Kancey. Both DL but could easily convert to Edge similar to Rashaad Gary because of their speed. On offense TE Darnell Washington. In that order. If we could get two of three great. These picks are all predicted to go late first or early second. We could for sure get one of them ideally maybe two. That said I thought Gute gave us a great draft last year so I am confident he knows what he is doing. It sure will help if we can get a couple of picks in the second round from the Rodgers trade.

It's all about when projectability, need, and draft board meet price point. At some point in the draft a guy like this is a real value, and probably earlier than many are giving him credit for.

People need to stop seeing these profiles as advocating players as first (or even second) round picks. If all they did was profile the top end at all position groups, the majority of readers here would do nothing but grouse after the second round because "I never heard of that guy". That, and nobody would have any reason to buy the draft guide.

Luckily the Edge position group is really strong just like the WR group. I like Tavius too. We should be able to get two pretty good players at both positions if we don't do something stupid early with #15.

Trade back for more chances to fill holes in middle rounds. I saw a great potential trade between Seahawks and Giants where Giants traded up from 25 to 20 and gave Seattle a 2nd and a 4th round pick to boot. Why not Green Bay making that trade and then either drafting a top 5 TE or trading back again with someone who wants back into 1st round and gives up even more. Thats how we could dominate this draft and fill all the holes in one year.

Hendon Hooker will be the #1 trade up for player this year. Bijan also. Maybe Levis if he falls as expected. Good chances for us to trade back. The Jets picks will also be a wildcard for us if it happens. This could be a draft simulator type of draft for the Packers with more than 12 new Packers.
