Defensive Ends: Prob-lo-matic

Great post up over at (defending Titletown winner and again nominated for Best Packer Blog) Railbird Central regarding the players that could conceivably be considered defensive ends currently residing on the Packers' roster. It's a sobering post and a reminder of how much work Thompson has to do. Pat Kirwan (in an excellent overall look at the transition the defense will be undergoing) looks at the DE position as the most problomatic as well and indicates it might be the one area Thompson could be an active participant in free agency.

Jarron Gilbert, DT, San Jose St. 6'6", 280 pounds. A very good chance he could be the Pack's 2nd rounder. I just learned about him for the 1st time when Chicago Hooligan picked him in the mock draft at FBG. Scott Wright has him on his hot prospect list. He's being considered a top 3-4 DE prospect in the draft now.

How about Gilbert in the 2nd round and sign Olshansky. Canty is already professing his love for the Tuna and would like to go to Miami so I'm not sure he'll be an option.

scrump - Gilbert and Olshansky would be a bonanza. If the Pack picks up either one I'll be more than happy...

Trade up for Raji if they have to. Pickett has a real question mark this year regardless of 3-4 or 4-3. He had very limited vertical movemnt last year. It was better near the end of the season, but for the all important Middle Guard (old 5-2 terminology -- anyone remember Les Binghamin?) they must have a plan B. Looks like some good DE's could fall to round two. Olshansky would be great. Sign him on Feb 28th.

Aaron, you are dead on with the blog being focused on the DE's. Montgomery is UFA, Harrell is a medical basket case, and Thompson is untested over the long-term. There is no one else.
