Datone Jones Suspended One Game For Violating Substance Abuse Policy
The defensive end will miss the opening game against the Bears.

The NFL has announced that Green Bay Packers defensive end Datone Jones has been suspended one game for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
NFL announces Packers DL Datone Jones is suspended for Week 1 for violating the substance abuse policy.

No word yet as to what the substance in question may have been, or if this was a possible procedural violation.
With the suspension being one game, a punishment that is not listed in the text of the Substance Abuse Policy, one would assume Jones and his reps agreed to a reduced suspension upon appeal. Indeed, Brian Carriveau points out the pertinent passage from the policy.
"A player who tests positive a first time due to the abuse of a prescription or over-the-counter drug will be eligible for a reduction"

Jones can return to the active roster on Monday, September 14 after the team's Week 1 game against the Bears. Jones is eligible to participate in all offseason practices and preseason games.
Needless to say, not a great start to what is an important year for the Packers veteran defensive end.

Say that again. We already know we'll miss Guion and now Jones? I bet it's weed

At least they'd know how to motivate him then. A bag of Doritos for every tackle (I was going to write 'hit', but he may have taken that wrong). Taco Bell for every sack.

My guess too. More snaps for someone else. Wait, who?

Came across this from Datone . Maybe you can interpret it. ? LOL
"I learned so many new things," Jones said during last month's minicamp. "I had to mature a lot. That was one thing. I had to really dial in and really mature a lot and really put my focus all into football. A lot. I had to really focus. That was the biggest thing with my growth to make that next jump. A lot of times it's not all about the numbers. 'This guy had 15 sacks.' No, it's not that. You have to dial in mentally and actually learn the game. That's where you get that veteran game where it's like, 'Man, this guy, you think a guy is physical, but he's not doing anything spectacular.'"

This quote is actually quite similar to Datone's UCLA career. He didn't blossom until his senior year.
I heard Datone interviewed on the radio several times during his senior year and after the Packers drafted him. He's a great kid, very well spoken. Everyone knows he has all the talent necessary. For some reason, it seems to take him a long time to adjust to a new situation.

They both smoke it but they don't inhale... If he inhaled he would miss 4 games. So glad many have learned from Bill Clinton.

How disappointing. I'll wait for the details before I crucify the man, though.

Don't see the resemblance in style, just tone. Cow's posts were not exactly pithy.

Hehe, eventually we'll know more. Mostly this is an annoyance. I doubt this is Roids or other illegal drugs with the one game. The Packers should be able to beat the Bears without him.

Without Datone and maybe Guion.

This is feeling verrry Nick Perry - Esque. Always hurt, marginal when he's not...
I hate to say it, but the B word can start to be thrown around.

Need more info but Perry at least is just injured. Dat One is still a young player who being a No 1 pick should it appears know better. Not like he's a washed up player looking for something to keep his career alive. We'll see I guess.

This guy is one of two 'bustkateers' I have labeled. Him Perry and the former James Worthless worthy.
Two one's a two and they call Ted a genius. If the would have drafted some very good players with those picks this team would have another SB in their pocket.
Datone does nada and Perry shows up. That;s all folks.

Since we expect that Guion will also be suspended our allegedly improved DL will start the 2015 season down 2 starters for the 1st game of the season. That's assuming no one else is suspended or injured during the preseason. Our defense may be off to another flying stop. Given D. Jones' injury history he doesn't need more reasons for missing games. Hopefully this is just a one time problem. Thanks, Since '61

Sorry, I don't think I am clear on what this means. Did Datone agree to this penalty instead of an appeal, or is some reduction in the future possible if he appeals? That is, is a fine possible in lieu of missing a game?
Second: does GB have to use a roster spot on Datone (and Guion) or will they be exempt? Against the Bears, will the DL roster look like maybe 1 or 2:
1) Daniels, Raji, Jones, Guion, Boyd, Pennel
2) Daniels, Raji, Boyd, Pennel, Thornton, Ringo

Don't we all get a little tired of the almost good players? Those who can't stay on the field for whatever reason - injuries, suspensions, not that good. Players like Neal, Perry, Jones, Quarless?
I don't fault Ted for picking these guys, just don't hang on to the marginal players too long.

As has been said: Datone the friendly ghost ... you know he is there ( on the field / in the lineup ) - you just can't see him ( do anything ) !
