Danger Lurks In the (Lack Of) Depth

While the defense did indeed look dominant, albeit against a less-than full strength Seattle offense, one major concern leaps out. Both the defensive end and linebacker positions are great at the top spots of the depth chart. But after backup defensive end Michael Montgomery's injury and after watching Nick Barnett's backup Desmond Bishop and what was just about the worst display of 'taking on a block' I've possibly ever seen, you have to be concerned. With all his trading down and acquiring more players, Ted Thompson's dream defense is shockingly devoid of any quality past it's stellar starting group. One shudders to think of how vulnerable this defense would become after an injury to Aaron Kampman or Nick Barnett. And don't even start on what would happen if Al Harris or Charles Woodson went down. You think the pass defense is ugly now? Ohhhh Nelly, that would be the train wreck to end all train wrecks...
