Cory's Corner: Put up or shut up for Eddie Lacy

The Green Bay Packers backfield is at a crossroads.

Eddie Lacy, the second round pick from 2013, was supposed to be the bell cow back for years.

He burst onto the scene right away by rushing for 78 yards a game, tallying 11 touchdowns and racking up an ample amount of spin moves en route to winning the NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year.

But that season seems so long ago now.

It all started when the 25-year-old Lacy showed up heavy to training camp this year. Normally that wouldn't be cause for concern, because most players come to camp a little doughy.

The difference is, most players can take the weight off. Growing up in the south, Lacy has battled these demons his entire life. His listed weight is 231, but he looks like he's north of 250. And with all that added weight, his speed has gone down. The weight has also led to Lacy being ranked 34th with only 12 rushes of 10 yards or more. That coincidentally, is the same number Aaron Rodgers has -- and he has 79 less attempts.

Then there is his maturity. He only saw five carries at Detroit because he was late for curfew. To some that may seem tame, but in reality that's a big deal. Because where does it stop? If he can't respect a simple curfew rule, what other team responsibilites does he have a problem with?

This is Lacy's third year as a pro. He's not supposed to be treated with kid gloves anymore. He's supposed to start mentoring younger players and showing them how to lead and be a pro.

Unfortunatly, that can't happen if you cannot lead or motivate yourself.

Lacy is signed for one more year -- but at the bargain price of $1.07 million. It's not time to give up on Lacy just yet, but it is time to work in the energetic John Crockett more. The rookie, who was promoted to the active 53-man roster before the Lions game, had a nice speed element that this offense has been missing all season.

And the more Lacy sees Crockett succeed in practices and in games, that should spark a fire in the former University of Alabama tailback. Then again, Lacy is a pro and shouldn't need motivational ploys to do his job sufficiently.

This is Lacy's time. If he's going to get back on track, he's going to do it now. He has an 81-yard game average for his nine career December games. And that's exactly why the Packers brought him to Green Bay in the first place -- to be the dependable road grader when the weather turned nasty.

However, if he continues to tailspin, Crockett should be sprinkled in more. And after the season, general manager Ted Thompson should look at Devontae Booker or Alex Collins in the draft.

Remember, Rodgers just turned 32. He and the Packers don't have time to wait for Lacy to go through another season like this. That's why the next four games are the most pivotal in Lacy's career. He'll be going through an in-game job interview for his bosses, while his teammates expect perfection.

Where Lacy ends up is purely up to Lacy.

Well Put! Best thing Lacy can do is show that we were wrong to doubt him. And for Crockett he should be added to the mix anyway.

I wonder if TT is looking at Murry from the Eagles as a stop-gap RB until he gets either Lacy back on track or a future rookie. Murry is too old for a long term contract, but could get the job done for a few years. Sort of a replacement for Starks.

December-February is when we need Lacy the most. Hopefully he can get it going now. This is the time of year that you want that big physical RB. Before the Lions game Lacy seemed to be turning it around. Hopefully consequences of the missed curfew will be a wake up call to Lacy and he will get his head on straight for the rest of the year.

I like our RB's with Lacy and Starks as our 1-2 combo. But I think the offense could really improve by starting to use Crockett more going forward. He is a different type of RB then Lacy and Starks. They are more similar types of RB's. Both are more physical. Crockett though brings a little more shiftiness and speed. But he also has power to break tackles. He could be their change of pace RB that could come in and provide a spark like he did against the Lions.

Maybe 20 lbs ago Lacy was a little faster, but he certainly isn't now! Crockett hits the hole on time, something Lacy has struggled w/ his career. Crockett plays much faster than his timed speed, not that he's a speed merchant or anything.

NFL... "enough suddenness to shake a downhill safety and long speed to finish with a big play."

Starks may out run them in a 40 yard straight run.

But I think Crockett has quicker feet to make quick cuts, and that little wiggle to make defenders miss. He has that short area quick step quickness that Lacy and Starks don't really have.
Also lets not forget that Crockett has very fresh legs.

Honestly I was more shocked that they kept Harris over both Neal and Crockett. That one preseason game where Harris dropped 2 screen passes I thought he was done.
Neal I thought was better then Harris and I thought Crockett would be better then Neal.

I'm just happy we didn't lose Crockett to another team. Hopefully he will continue to play and improve.

It seems unlikely, but I wonder if the Packers might have kept Harris becuz they knew it would make Lacy happy. If the other 3 were seen as relative equals by the Packers, it might have been a bit of a gift to try to make sure Lacy was a happy camper (thinking a happy Lacy is a productive one). Kinda ironic that now seems to be a reason, one of them anyway, why Lacy has been unproductive this season.

Not saying any of this is actually the case, but its not out of the realm of possibilities either.

Yeah, I really would like to know why they kept Harris over Neal and Crockett. But much like others in the past, they always seem to keep 1 player that is head scratching to everyone. Last year it was keeping Goodson over Rolle.
From what I had heard/read was they kept him because they thought he was the better runner, and he was very similar to Lacy/Starks so if one got hurt they could bring in Harris and the offense could be run the same way.

What is funny though is when they have been hurt they barely played him. So if that was the case, I don't think that could be true.

Starks has good straight line speed. His long strides, however, sometimes cause him to trip over his own feet in the open field, especially when needing to make a cut in space. It's happened quite a bit. Lacy and Crockett have quicker feet in the hole.

@RC

I agree with the quicker feet and wiggle part. You hit the nail on the head with that last sentence also.

I still think Starks has the advantage in burst because he doesn't waste steps going forward and is impatient (to a fault).

I really think that is something that could give the offense a boost. Especially when they are pounding Lacy and Starks at teams, if they can bring in Crockett (who is fresh) for 10 plays or so a game, it could give the offense a boost and he could be a really nice change of pace threat.

Right on. I like the idea of using a 3rd back (if talented) that's different from the first 2. He doesn't need to get 10 or 15 carries, but he should be worked in some way somehow.

I read another article on Crockett on how he was asked to travel with the team while he was still signed to the practice squad. I don't know what other teams do, but that's unheard of for me. That says a lot about the type of player and teammate he is. He only had a 3 hour notice up when he was told that he'll be on the active roster against the Lions.

I just read somewhere, and I can't remember who wrote it, but it said that the Packers take 2 PS players of the week to travel with the team. So they take whoever is the best 2 players that week with them. For last weeks game they took Crockett and Henry.
I thought that was really interesting and cool.

I'm curious now since they took Henry with if he is maybe a guy they look to promote at some point.

Yep, heard/read the same thing. From what I could gather they treat it like a reward for whoever is happening to be practicing well and doing his job the best. Whether its for that week or longer I don't know/remember. It made it sound like a coincidence that Crockett had just gotten the reward for the first time this season and it had nothing to do w/ anything that was ultimately going on w/ Lacy. That makes sense too, since Lacy was probably on course to start vs Det or at the very least play a prominent role coming off 2 consecutive 100 yd games. THe Packers didn't seem to have any reason to believe that Lacy and Harris would be late for curfew the nite b4 a game.

Turned out well for Crockett, since that got him promoted to the roster for what looks to be the remainder of the season. And he made a good contribution w/ his limited snaps. If he hadn't been rewarded that week he may have gotten promoted but not in the game vs Det.

At this point, I don't care about his weight, his past performance or the years left on his rookie contract. We all know that he can help carry this anemic offense. He has to demonstrate that he wants to be part of this team. Can't have a guy who isn't working his tail off to be the best that he can be. All oars in the water...

Eddie is fat for an athlete. He does not know how to motivate himself, and he needs to do so or he will wash out of the league.

Seeing as a strong running game is really our only hope to win it all this year, I hope he comes to play against Dallas. But you don't get yourself in shape during the year. That's what the offseason is for. There isn't enough time left for him to work himself there.

Not good for him. Not good for us. I hope he grows up before next year or he'll be gone.

I think we're making a mountain out of a mole hill here.

Three articles on Eddie Lacy. Come on.
Here's what we're making up:
1) He can't control his southern food diet?!?
2) He doesn't care about the Packers!?
3) He can't produce!?
4) He's lost it!?

Here's what also could be going on:
1) He's a big dude trying to figure out a growth spurt.
2) He is struggling with the game because his mom keeps telling him she's scared of concussions, he didn't produce early, and he got demoted and it's psychologically taking a toll.
3) Our offensive line isn't creating holes for anyone.
4) He's got nagging ankle concerns.

Here are the facts that we actually know:
1) No one knows what his weigh is except the Packers.
2) No one knows how he feels about the organization that gave him a check to move his mom into a new home, least of all...any of us. He missed a curfew. We have no idea why.
3) Our offensive line is missing 3-4 starters. Crockett had more success because he is shifty when there are no holes. Prior to this game Lacy had two games over 100 with a high ypc.
4) The whole offense is in a funk. See what December has to say.

It's not like this guy beat his wife or kid, but we are lashing out like viking and Baltimore fans. He's not even being a deva or complaining to the media. Calm down. Haven't we beat a dead horse on this?

so far on lacy it is only really the fumbles that have me down on him. hell, do you see him missing holes? yes, once or twice, but it is not like there are a whole lot there. and nothing i have seen indicates in anyway that lacy is a jerk; just a good guy. but then what do i know. there short answer is. we need him like he played last year or we are done. and we might be done anyway. the guy to get down on ain't eddie, but why we even have davante in uniform.

When he doesn't get the yards, he's fat, lazy and a bad team mate
When he gets 100 yards, he's a freight train with an easy going charm

Maybe there is something going on, but I think it's silly to call a guy fat and lazy when you don't see him in practice and all you see him in is pads on Sunday.

A growth spurt? The guy is 25 yrs old. The only growth he's seen is around his waist and its due to his love of food (probably southern) and his not loving football and conditioning enough to push himself away from the table.

If he's having psychological problems from being demoted, he should have thought of that in the offseason when he wasn't putting in the required training to keep the lbs off in the first place. Go see a psychologist, but get over it!

Crockett found holes to run thru for 4.5 yds per carry on the same number of carries and Crockett lost 4 yds on one run that he slipped and fell.

Enough about the ankle, its ancient history!

Per an NFL source Lacy is at least 20 lbs heavier than his listed weight of 234. Don't try to tell me he's not overweight and its affecting his production, it clearly is.

He missed curfew along w/ his buddy. Lacy got demoted (lucky he was a high draft pick and recent success), his buddy (the UDFA) got cut. Message sent and Lacy damn well better have received it! I don't care why, he was demoted previously and was about to get his job back w/ 2 very good games, only he F'd up again!

Crockett ran thru holes he didn't pull a Barry Sanders. Lacy doesn't always hit the hole on time and often misses them.

December is a new month and Lacy and the offense has a shot at redemption. If the horse is still having issues its not dead!

Have to agree with Bohj here. Think this Lacy sucks thing is way overdone. He doesn't move well laterally. Never will even with less weight. But that's not his game. Plowing, banging and spinning forward through the interior gaps is. He is more than a decent receiver and pass blocker. He had two good games just prior to this last one where he received only around six carries as a punishment for missing curfew. How can you draw an conclusions from that small sample size (same goes for Crockett too)?

The ankle and groin did affect him for most of the first half of the season. When he was getting better, he busted off two hundred plus yard games. I don't think he's ever given less than 100% on the field since he's been here.

The weight thing is whats got everyone in a tizz. But I can't tell if it's affected his speed or agility. He runs about the same to me. For all I know it makes LB's and secondary even more wary to get in front of him.

I agree the fumbling is a problem. Can't keep doing that. But I'll take his easy-going personality anytime. Way to early to jettison one of the best things about our offense prior two seasons. Especially someone this young.

I checked into this. Lacy's NFL combine profile has his weight at 231. I don't think he's been 231 since that day, he obviously got himself in shape for the combine and has recently let himself go. He'll continue to have leg injuries if he doesn't get his weight down. Hell, even AJ Hawk got faster when he lost weight.

Cory's best article in my opinion.

Good comments here as well.

I believe Lacy lacks both self discipline and I'm suspect about how much he actually likes and is devoted to professional football.

He is a likable fellow who lacks the ability to push himself away from the table and it's affecting his performance on the field. Too bad for Lacy and it's too bad for the Green Bay Packers and us, the fans.

The negatives about Lacy when he came out of Alabama is that he was injury prone and had problems making weight.

Nothing has changed. When he's motivated, he helps. When he isn't motivated, he's fat and no help.

He's clearly at a crossroads as a professional athlete.

Well, as far as the injury history, it was known that Lacy was always banged up in college, but the full story line was Lacy was always banged up in college, but he never let that stop him from showing up to play and playing at a high level.

One NFL scout, in reference to Lacy's ability to play through injury at a high level said, "He's a different kind of cat", for whatever that's worth, lol.

It may not have translated over the NFL, but that was the 'skinny' on Lacy's injury history as he came into the league.

The Packers misuse Lacy too often. While he can run out of the off-set position in the gun, he's better suited in I formation or in single back sets with his heels at 7 yds or 6 1/2 on the Packers 60 series runs. He's decent enough in the Pistol. In the shotgun, he's forced to move laterally too often.

If Cassel can ligth it up against our pass D then Capers needs to be shown the door. I know his answer is to rush 6 hoping, praying we can get to Cassel before he throws that dart to the wide open guy in the middle like everyone else has been doing.

Game opened at GB-5. Did Not like this line at all. Line has now moved to GB-7. I still don't like it, especially with Romo out, but I like it better than GB-5. I'd be happier with GB-8 1/2.

I don't see how GB can lose this game. Usually that's not good. Unlike all or most of you guy's, I look at all the angles.

Contrary to what some of you have said, MM knows what's going on, & what's best for his team. GB is currently in a Very Good position for the playoffs. They are also Pretty Banged Up. Go ahead & jump on me, but GB has a game to waste somewhere here down the stretch. This may not be the game, but MM will do what is Best for the long hall. What he says, & what he does are 2 different things. He's a Smart Coach. I've seen some of it, that you wouldn't probably understand.

As I said, I personally don't see GB losing this game, but it would be a tough game to bet, considering all the circumstances. Don't think for a second that MM isn't watching the board, & who's where. He's the 1st GB coach I've seen, who knows the score. He knows what he is doing.

Tom ,this is December. The key thing is for this team to get healthy and start to get in some sort of rhythm. This is the game not to lose . They always play good against the Cowboys, Packers roll in this one.

4thand1, I don't disagree with what you are saying. IMO the health of this team is the most important thing at this point. What is the weather suppose to be like on Sunday in GB? We're looking at this game from 2 different perspectives. You're looking at it even up, & I'm looking @ -7. Normally I'd run to the window with GB -7 over Dallas. That looks to me like an automatic Win. The Health of this team, & the weather on Sunday may play a role in the outcome. I don't get daily news here on GB. What do you hear on the OL. Who's in & Who's out? LVT

This Lacy thing scares me more than the rest of the offense's struggles for reasons you just mentioned, Cory. We don't have time to sit back and hope he figures this out. BUT this is exactly the kind of thing that those veterans TT runs off are good to keep around the locker room for. They've been in these battles and have no fear of calling young guys out who may, or may not be, playing video games instead of preparing properly. They've been in big game situations where 'It's time' as Kevin Greene once said to Clay Matthews (another guy I'd like to see back on this staff if he's willing). I see absolutely NO ONE on this team, in the coaching staff or playing, that's leading that vocal charge to getting their crap right and if we're back to square one at RB, that's going to not only sink the season but put us back to yet another hole to fix at the draft when it supposedly didn't exist. Just like DT, ILB, safety, and RB over the last several years of TT.

As for Crockett, this guy is getting WAY too much hype. This is Samkon Gado or DuJuan Harris 2.0 if he got into the lineup, not Ryan Grant, folks. The guy made the practice squad, that's it. If we're hanging our running game on him, our season's done. He provided a nice spark but to think he'll be able to average 4yds/carry once defenses see more of him's laughable.

On the positive side, MM said Lacy's looked good already this week so if he keeps it up, we could see another good game. The big problem with Lacy is he's a RB that gets better with more carries. That means commitment to the run early AND late, which MM rarely has shown an ability to stick to regularly. If he was on a team like the Giants, by the 4th quarter, he'd be bowling over safeties in the secondary with his 25th carry. Lacy needs support from Packer fans right now, not a mob. I get he needs to man up but he seems to be a guy that feeds on positive reinforcement, not negative.

You mean like how those veterans Peppers and Raji called out Clinton-Dix? Yeah, not worried about a lack of veteran leadership AT ALL! That just happened, what, a month ago? How soon we forget!

Read one sentence and not able read the rest of your comment.

You would suck too if you were confined to your moms basement eating boogers and doing you know what with your grandpas playboys from back when they didn't shave. I'm still trying to figure out jennerjohns excuse and why he is allowed to write here. Both need to be deported!

Good point. Dallas snuffed Washingtons run and pass rushed the crap out of Cousins all night long. Could be a long day if Rogers can't pass and we can't run.

This Lacy incident proved one thing I suspected: The coaches are hell bent on promoting and playing the higher draft picks, even if late rounders have shown more ability and should have been given a chance.

Took some doing before they sat Lacy and now they are in a big hurry to get him going again when we have two backs that seem to be getting it done.

Bottom line, every time Lacy is out there Starks and others aren't. Starks did go get overweight or miss curfew but has outplayed Lacy all season but they want to sit him again,

These guys are professionals. They need or should need no encouragement to be all they can be. Most played their entire life, thinking and breathing of playing in the NFL, getting that chance.

If Lacy needs inspiration, we drafted the wrong guy.

I still think there is something more going on between his ears that allowed him to be grossly overweight and not ready to play.

They have to weigh in all the time. They also get fined for being overweight. He didn't just pack on a few pounds overnight. With a bad ankle early and groin he apparently did some big time piggin down. Maybe he has a thyroid problem too, lmao.

and chicken and ribs problem, pizza problem coach potato problem. Ankle injuries occur a lot when one is over weight, the ankle just isn't used to handling it. Gee I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Listened to some interview he did either today or yesterday and he says he is ready and is not the kind of guy who makes mistakes. Ah, Eddy, are you forgetting the 4 fumbles in 5 games or did that get drunk out of your memory in Canada?
He said he forgot the time but he didn't foget to take a passport. Can't go into Canada without one or a special drivers license with int, travel on it.

The way I see it...is the the Packers have 3 damn good running backs that other teams would fricken die over.

Truth: Lacy has had injuries. Groin and Ankle. To anyone who has played the game can only explain the pain. Lacy could drop 10 /15 pounds and that would increase his speed and help the beating his body is taking.

Truth: Starks is a strider, fast and smooth and doesn't mind lowering his head and laying into a back. He was awesome in the Super Bowl year and he has been injury free this season.

Truth: We have a wild card in the deck. Mark the words of an old man...Johnny Rocket is the real deal. He is going to help this team.

Truth: The offensive line is in shambles. The walking wounded just hope they don't have to move to block with their injured shoulders, hips, ankles, knees...this is not the same group that tore the league up last year...and it has diminished our running backs production. Lacy has had to run East and West because the line hasn't been able to do what they use to do...make holes that a road grader could go through.

The backs are good if not very very good. If the line gets back to form we wont have much to mumble about...if not... you could put E. Smith, B Sanders, or
Sweetness back there and they would look like mere mortals.

The Pack played 3 games in 10 days...a horrible fact of scheduling...they have had the blessing of having 10 days before there next game.

I'm betting that we will see some fantastic production out of all 3 backs against Dallas...Taking on all betters!!!

Go Pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
