Cory's Corner: Communication Is Key; Not Julio

Jones has been an elite reciever, but his skills are fading.

I don’t see it. I just don’t see how the Packers make an offer for Julio Jones.

Is it enticing? By all means, yes it is. However, is Jones really the X-factor in keeping Aaron Rodgers? I highly doubt that.

First of all, we know how impactful Jones has been in his career. The hulking 6-foot, 220-pound wideout has averaged 84 receptions, 1,289 yards and six touchdowns a seasons in 10 years. He was top 10 in the league in receptions in five seasons and was top 10 for receiving yards in six seasons.

There’s no doubt that Jones has proven that he was an elite wide receiver. Cornerbacks could not cover a guy with a wingspan like a pterodactyl and let’s not forget that he had 4.34 40-yard dash time. He has the perfect intersection of skill and God-given ability that made him nearly unguardable for so long.

But let’s not gloss over the fact that I said was. Jones is 32 and his production has fallen off since 2018. He has started 24 games the last two seasons, with the biggest issue being a left hamstring injury that he suffered last September and kept aggravating it throughout the season.

Secondly, what would the Packers even give up? I know that many think the Packers can dangle Jordan Love in front of the Falcons, but how much value does a guy that has never dressed in an NFL game actually have? On the surface, this looks great because Jones is a name receiver that could help out. However, I have always had a problem with signing the big, shiny object because it rarely works out.

This isn’t going to be magically solved by bringing in a receiver in the twilight of his career. It’s going to be solved through communication. We are in this position because former Packers coach Mike McCarthy was a clunky communicator and thanks to the last two NFC title games, Packers coach Matt LaFleur has his own communication warts.

Rodgers doesn’t need full autonomy. All he needs is a heads up as to what’s happening. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

32 year old wide receiver with injuries. 'nuff said regarding expensive trade. But for sure bring him in for a look if he becomes a cap casualty. FAS! GPG!

Receivers are seldom the answer to any NFL team. Atlanta paid dearly for him and they have been to one SB.
Of course that's one more than the Packers during that time, but still wasn't enough to get them over the top.
While wide outs are needed, it seems good defenses always find a way to neutralize them. Having multiple positions that become serious aerial targets are more important to the passing game.

Why would any team give up any capital for an expensive contract rather than simply using early free agency? The Bucs got Brady from the Patriots for “free.” It doesn’t even make sense that Aaron Rodgers would want to be traded. His new team would be crippled by the lost draft capital.

The theme here that all Rodgers needs is love not Love is a bit threadbare at this point. That doesn’t change the fact that Julio Jones isn’t an answer.

No, just no to Julio Jones. The Packer receiving corps was adequate last year and will be better this year with the additions of Rodgers and Funchess. The Packers can't afford Jones' contract without significant cuts elsewhere or cutting Davante Adams if you want to keep the WR pool about the same in cost. Neither move makes any sense as a 32 year old WR will not significantly improve an offense that was already #1 in the league last year.

If any moves are made, improve our defense which was not #1 in the league last year........

NO! No! No!

What I picked up on at 32 years of age is he has NOT been the same since 2018. That would put him at 29 years of age when Julio's game started deteriorating. Dont know how much injuries and other factors played into this.

Adam's is 28 years old now and will be 29 during the upcoming season? Adam's is amazing but if Rodger's is traded, please package Adam's as well and let's get some talented players and draft choices. Lombardi always said it is better to trade a player a year to soon vs a year to late.

Not a lombardi quote.

Ron Wolf used to say it, and TT also has mentioned it. I always thought it was Ron Wolf's original quote, but that's not the case, either.

I chased down the rabbit hole once and found the source, which I no longer remember, but it's definitely not Lombardi or Wolf.

Oppy - the originator of the quote is Branch Rickey. Branch was the Team President and GM of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In addition to the quote, Rickey broke the baseball color barrier when he signed Jackie Robinson to an MLB contract with the Dodgers.

Sadly, Rickey is mostly forgotten now but he was a seismic force in sports, particularly baseball, in his time.

Florio punted the theory of Julio as an olive branch for the Packers to offer Rodgers yesterday. So out of thin air essentially.

Rodgers wants more money and to pay Julio 15 million just to loose Adam's because there is no cap room makes no sense.

Not needed on the Packers but would be a perfect fit on Tampa who are already ahead of the curve vs the Packers, not signing a veteran D lineman or inside linebacker will again hinder the Packers.

Agree on passing on Jones, but IMHO it is off target to aim at McCarty and MLF re the current issues.

A year ago, in May '19, the Journal reported that GB's "organizational chart that for 25 years spelled out the hierarchy in a clear and concise manner is gone. The president is still on top, but there is no single person in charge of the football operation... to set the course and make sure everyone was working toward the same organizational goal. It is a structure that is fraught with trouble based on the franchise's history." Murphy choose a structure which allowed him to be more involved in football operations and spend a lot more time on the coach’s floor and in the locker room than Thompson did.

"Speaking with current and former members of the organization, there are concerns that the organization is headed down a faulty path."

Russ Ball got a position of authority nearly equal to what Thompson had despite his being passed over for the GM’s job 17 months earlier. Gutekunst thought he had interviewed for the same job Thompson had, but Murphy offered a different, lesser position. Gutekunst was taken aback but decided to stay in Green Bay.

And LaFleur didn't get the authority he expected either. "LaFleur was excited about hiring highly regarded Miami special teams coach Darren Rizzi, who was not returning to the Dolphins and had told the Packers he would come up for an interview but was not going to sign for less than three years and total of $4.5 million, a source said. Rizzi was told to come. He and LaFleur hit it off in their interview, the source said. But when it came time to talk about a contract, the Packers offered Rizzi less than he was seeking and Rizzi felt he had been led astray. He left town.

"The Packers eventually met his price a couple of days later, but by that time Rizzi had decided to pursue other opportunities. LaFleur tried to convince him to change his mind but had no success."

Let's hope Murphy has learned something and does better this time.

Being cheap never works. You know what you need, but the price is higher than you would like. How many Super Bowls have not been attained because the cost is merely a draft pick next season......really. That is what we are dealing with here in GB. In this case a proven ST master. Gute would still have to use his much coveted draft pick for ST level players to fit a good coaches requirements also, not JAG who might be able to do the job.

It's time Murphy Goes. I'd hire Brett Veach. And put Gute on Notice. Either we get a super-bowl winner, or he's out the door.

Too late, the silage is mounding up and not fed to the cattle. You get corn-fed, feed lot rough stock loaded up on steroids and antibiotics. There is no longer a natural order. Andrew Brandt could bring some new life to Packertown .

The Executive Committee 'corrected' Murphy by the end of that season. By the end of the next season, they made it clear that GM Brian Gutekunst was in control of all front office football operations and reports directly to the Board of Directors (their day to day oversite committee) not Murphy. To say the EC screwed up would be a gross understatement. It literally took former Packer President Bob Harlan riding in to save the day. But you're right, neither McCarthy nor current coach Lafleur is to blame for the massive FUBAR that happened under Murphy. The EC fixed their mistake. But it could have been worse, a lot worse. The Packer organization dodged a major bullet.

The WR addition pays dividends when our OL is rag dolled in both NFCC games and we pretty much have to abandon ML run game because of it and revert to AR throwing the ball nearly every down. The Defense brings down the pressure and punt or fumble or INT. Gute picking up road grader OL in the draft and using Dafney and Deguara more in the run game along with Dillon, maybe even an extra OL in the run game could bring a bit of smash mouth to our run game. Imposing our will on even good Defenses is a must to get over the hump. The better we can do that, the less need we have for another star WR. I do believe we get improvement from our current WR's and Amari. If Rodgers is under center, we have enough different makeup on Offense for ML to come up with a different recipe for success. I don't see us having problems running the rock with this group if enough of them stay healthy. A star WR would be icing on the cake though. Bring up the BEEF to the OL. GPG

I'm all for Julio Jones. If Rodgers is the QB. We've had Graham, Peppers, and a few others. And currently Mercedes Lewis, and Funchess. But if he wants to play. Kick the tires, and lets see what he's got left.

Jones, as an aging, oft-injured player is trending straight down to the lower claiming ranks - where he can eventually be picked-up for practically free (agent). If so - why now?

Meanwhile "communication"? As I've stated before, the Packers have never been great at "Thinking Of You" cards. And if Rodgers really wanted be kept in the loop - isn't that what agents should do? After all, his lackey and agent (David Dunn) will make approximately $900,000 this year off Rodgers. How about a phone call to Gutekunst and/Murphy - asking for a courtesy "heads-up" (or something along those lines)? The Packers are a professional football team - not a baby-sitting service.

Finally, there is the little matter of an existing contract. The only communication necessary here is "We have a signed contract - so we expect to see you in training camp. Please give our regards to Ms. Woodley." - click

(sigh) I like Julio Jones. A truly great player in his prime. Even now a no.1 WR when he is on the field. It is ironic that both him and Rodgers are in the same sort of situation. Neither team can really afford them, but both need them for this year. Well, on to OTAs...

At this point in the game, I don't want Love to leave here until we determine if he is a player or not. Right now we don't know if we have an elite talent in the waiting or just another first round quarterback misfire which is more common than not in the NFL. Gute used a 1st and a 4th round draft choice to get him and we just haven't kicked the tires on him yet. Rodgers has a good start on alienating Packer fans and certainly has done nothing to endear himself to the Green Bay Packers organization this year and it may be more difficult than most people suspect for him to be on the Packers team this year, even if he decides he is willing to stay.
