Clay Matthews Possibly Out as Little as Three Weeks

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy told Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray of SiriusXM Radio that linebacker Clay Matthews could be out three or four weeks.

With most reports saying Matthews would miss roughly a month, many had assumed four games or more.

Certainly, nothing will become official until a later date, but perhaps Matthews' timeline for return has become more optimistic.

When McCarthy says 3 weeks, always double to get the correct answer.

Please give me an example of McCarthy putting a timeline on a player and it ends up being longer.

When did all this injury talk take center stage? During what era? Was Mike Sherman always talking about it? Ray Rhodes? Mike Holmgren? Lindy Infante? Forrest Gregg? Bart Starr?

Players have ALWAYS gotten injured and missed games, but, how did this slowly morph into the deal it is now? Or was it more abrupt?

Man, it is tiresome...

Started w/ the internet age. Before people just said he was out and waited for a players return. Now w/ the internet and all these chat sites, we have a forum and the ability to speculate a lot more than we did in the past. The emergence of Fantasy Football also makes injuries a lot more relevant to us fans.

3 weeks would be a pretty quick turnaround for that injury. I had the same fracture and it took mine a good 5 weeks but I was in my 40's not my 20's. It comes down to the amount of fusion the bones have that determines how soon he'll be back. Gotta have a good strong start to the fusion or the bones fragments could detach again if irritated. I would guess 4 wks to be safe. Only xrays or a scan will be able to determine if fusion is good enough. Complete health would be about 8-10 weeks.

Hmm never had the extent of these injuries in the 80s and 90s,would like to go back and see how many games linebackers missed in 20 years.I would imagine linebackers missed more games this year than all of ten years from 1990 to 2000
