Classic Collins

While perhaps not as overwrought as Alex over at the Lounge, I admit that, new child or no, Nick Collins not wanting to report for offseason activities until contract negotiations begin is absurd.

Well fine. We’re one step closer to Anthony Smith taking over as the starting free safety of the Packers and relegating the most overrated player on the Packers’ roster to the bench. I mean, seriously – you only need to hear Collins open his mouth and speak to know that he’ll need every moment he can get with Capers and Perry to grasp the defensive installation. If he wants to throw away that time, it’s more than fine by me.

(As an aside: If Thompson is indeed going to build through the draft, perhaps he should stagger the lengths of his contracts and/or not cave in to mediocre running backs’ contract demands after half of a very good season. Just a thought…)

It still really bothers me that Thompson gave into Grant.

  2. Bad Knees says:

Buy him an insurance policy in case of severe injury. Then wait him out and pay him fairly when the time comes to negotiate.

  3. Andrew n Atlanta says:

There is Aaron weighing in on Collins. I’ve been waiting for that post.

  4. Ron La Canne says:

Okay, this is TT’s time to shine. Pull a “Lombardi vs. Ringo” and trade him while the 2008 season is still in the minds of the other GM’s. He is not an RFA, he is not an ERFA (Williams) he is a malcontent, a potential cancer. At least get something for him. Even a 3rd or 4th rounder would be better than having to hear him complaining for a year and a half.

Seriously, try to read this and not laugh: http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2009/03/19/1/ ROFL

  6. Ron La Canne says:

P.S. Tramon Williams is participating in the Conditioning Program this week. And he is an ERFA and no contract at this time.

  7. Ron La Canne says:

    AR,

” Aggressive and Bush” in the same sentence equals an oxymoron of mammouth proportion.

  8. L.A. says:

Despite his breakout season, the guy has a Wonderlic lower than his shoe size, and you would think after Javon Walker we would have learned our lesson about dealing with freakish athletic talent with the mind of Forrest Gump.

    A) He should be a strong safety, not a free safety.

    B) You don’t get rewarded for ONE GOOD YEAR after several years of mediocrity (see: Javon Walker).

Time to see if Ted’s depth is as great as we all hope it is.

  9. PackerBacker says:

The great thing is, if any of you read the National Football Post, Andrew Brandt wrote an article about this exact problem a few weeks ago.

    http://www.nationalfootballpos.....l-problem/

He talks about the players who go to the Pro Bowl and how they come back with delusions of grandure in their head. Tell Collins to show up and shut his damn mouth. If he’s “football smart” enough to pick up the 3-4, he’ll make huge bank. If not, we replace him without having invested stupid money in him.

  10. seekr says:

I agree with Ron. TT should pull a fast one and trade.

  11. L.A. says:

Incidentally, wasn’t it Latrell Sprewell who famously held out because he needed money to “feed his family”? Because, heaven knows, Collins can’t do that on a mere half-a-million dollars a year. Can you imagine if he has twins??

  12. [...] I was inspired once Aaron wrote this and had to post this video of Nick Collins. I love how Bigby calls him a feeder fish. Just goes to [...]
