CHTV On Sports 790 In Houston

Aaron Nagler joins Lance Zierlein on The Big Show to talk Packers on 790 AM in Houston.

I had a good time talking all things Packers with Lance Zierlein, Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler yesterday on The Big Show down in Houston. We talked about the Packers prospects for an undefeated season, their victory over the Lions, as well as the fallout from the Suh Stomp.

With you on the obliteration of the niners should they be unfortunate enough to play us.

HOWEVER! To say that Mr. Woodson can't cover is absurd. Can he cover like he did in his prime? No. But I'm not ready to say he and his second in the league 5 int's are a liability in coverage. You don't want to put him on WR #1 anymore, but he can still make a #2 or 3 disappear if asked to. I'll expect you will punch yourself in the face for your blasphemous comments on Mr. Woodson. Post pictures of bloody face.

Woodson can't cover anymore.

Selling out on a play and making an INT has little to do with coverage. Watch most of Wood's INTs..most of them aren't coming while he's covering. They come when he recognizes formations and personnel groupings, and he sees the play before the ball is snapped. He sells out.

Covering is a matter of running and reacting on the fly. Woodson is no good at that anymore. He's been ranked in the mid-80's amongst all active CB's in the NFL in terms of coverage this year.. 32 teams.. to be considered a "starting caliber" coverage corner, you'd need to rank in the top 64. Just to break into the realm of a starting-caliber nickle back in terms of coverage you'd have to rank inside of 96. You do the math.

It's not a matter of blasting Woodson, it's a matter of acknowledging what he is at this stage of his career. He's not a cover corner by any stretch of the imagination. What he is, is an extremely smart, insightful player with great instincts and a willingness to be physical and aggressive.

"Selling out on a play and making an INT has little to do with coverage. Watch most of Wood’s INTs..most of them aren’t coming while he’s covering. They come when he recognizes formations and personnel groupings, and he sees the play before the ball is snapped. He sells out."

So he's not covering? He's, uhm, playing QB?

That is one of the most ridiculous comments you've posted, Oppy. Studying the opponent has everything to do with covering. You think Revis just go out there and play by instinct?

And, also, at least a couple of Woodson's interceptions came in man coverage, where he baited Ponder;

I'm 100% with you Fitz, Woodson is not a #1 shutdown corner anymore (not that he has ever been BTW), but to say he can't cover is nonsense.

And why would we ask Woodson to play the #1 when he's so good at doing so many other things and we have a CB who can cover any #1 in the league?

Anyone that says Woodson is a liability doesn't understand football.

If you don't understand the difference between actually covering a WR or just blatantly selling out, there's not much I can add to this discussion.

There's a reason why we use Woodson in such an aggressive manner near the LOS and in zones (it utilizes his current strengths), and there's a reason we try to avoid putting him in situations where he has to cover a WR down the field (it exposes his weaknesses).

You can color it any way you want- Woodson doesn't have the tools to play man coverage down the field at a high level on good WR's any longer. He's got great value when we put him in position to use his off-the-charts football IQ and hide his limitations from an athletic standpoint. He truly is, at this point in his career, more of a LB or a S than a CB.

Quite frankly, I've been saying this since last year, and I'm relieved to see some people are finally stepping up and telling it like it is.. Nagler, and his hosts on that radio show, are absolutely spot on when they say nobody's talking about it. It's the 700 lbs. gorilla in the room. All you have to do is watch the tape.

You can be in denial all you want, but it's the truth.

Would it make you feel better if I said it like everyone else who wants to dance around the situation? "We should move Woodson to Safety". THat's the polite way of saying "Woodson can't cover anymore".

After your first four words, I had read enough. That's just not a true blanket statement.

I guess Woodson just stands in one spot the whole game and by shear # of throws he will eventually get a ball thrown right to him? Is that how he gets his picks? Or is he indeed moving around... In "coverage"... And getting picks... While "covering"?

Woodson gives up big plays in coverage on a regular basis.

Let me reiterate: Woodson is a great asset to this team. He's a monster in the role we use him in, and his presence and leadership elevate the defense. His teaching of how to study to our DB's has been a big part of their success.

But dude can't cover anymore. Not at a starting CB level. Average AT BEST. Not his fault his body doesn't have the twitch reflex it used to.

Get over it.

Waaay over it big guy. I actually run into this quite a bit, I've come to learn that I can't make people see what is correct, I can just give them a gentle nudge in the right direction. You have been nudged, that is all I can do for you.

God Bless

P.S. Woodson can still cover.

Oppy: Stevie Johnson. Apparently Revis can't cover... And not to mention Cromartie that gave up 2 tds to a WR that had none in the season...

Welcome to the 2010's NFL, where no CB can keep a receiver from catching in a whole game.

Most often Woodson is jumping routes to get his picks. He does not always have coverage responsibilities on the target when these occur either. He is also getting most of his picks against rookie QBs like Ponder and Newton. I think that tells you a lot. He certainly won't be able to read the rookies and jump the routes when play-off time comes around.

Maybe this is part of the Sam Shields mystery as well. He looks worse this year because the Packers have to use him in coverage more this year. Just a thought.
