Christian Watson's Athletic Profile Is Legendary

Christian Watson had some impressive plays during his rookie season. It's not false hope, though - his athletic profile stacks up to anyone in the league today.

One of my favorite parts of the year is the NFL Draft.

I love studying the prospects and trying to project who will turn into stars, then following their careers to see how they progress.

During last year's draft, Christian Watson was a player who really stuck out to me. He just looks like a big play waiting to happen. He played in a run-heavy offense, which made him harder to scout, but his athleticism was as obvious on film as it was at the Combine.

He showed flashed of potential from the first play of the season. Yes, he dropped a gimmie touchdown, but he showed that he could absolutely torch opposing defenses. He used his speed and open field awareness to bend the matrix against the Eagles, showed the ability to come down with amazing contested catches against the Titans, and proved he can take over a game against the Cowboys.

Those flashes showed what he's capable of and lead me to believe he can become a top tier receiver in the NFL.

A lot of players show some flashes in their rookie year and end up flaming out. However, I think that won't happen with Christian Watson because of his absolutely insane athletic profile.

To be clear, athletic measureables aren't the end-all be-all, but when a player has them and flashes like that, it's a good clue that they have a lot of potential.

There are tons of intangibles that play into a player's potential, too, but we can't measure them (which is why we call them intangible).

Still, his tangibles are pretty incredible. Let's compare his athletic profile to a familiar face in Davante Adams, a historically insane athlete in Randy Moss, and the reigning most productive wide receiver from each of our division rivals.

Note: All measurements were gathered from Kent Lee Platt's RAS Score Database, to ensure consistency and objectivity (their historic scoring was also used for combined measurements that like the explosiveness rating that comes from combining vertical jump with broad jump).

Height and Weight

  1. Christian Watson 6'4, 208
  2. Randy Moss 6'3, 194
  3. Justin Jefferson 6'1, 202
  4. Davante Adams 6'0, 212
  5. Amon-Ra St. Brown 5'11, 197
  6. Darnell Mooney 5'10, 176

Watson is the biggest guy out of this bunch. His size makes him a big target with a huge catch radius. Randy Moss is the next biggest, and these two have much bigger frames than any of the other guys. It's worth noting that Randy Moss has abnormally long arms, which probably gave him the biggest catch radius of the bunch simply from a target size perspective. Both Watson and Moss have wiry builds that suited their roles as deep threats. Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams are build thicker and more dense, although none of these receivers have a reputation for being maulers. They get a lot of their weight from powerful thighs and glutes - this translates to less quick twitch speed than the rest of bunch, as we see in the next measure.

40 yard dash (with 10 and 20 yard splits)

  1. Christian Watson 4.36 (2.45, 1.45)
  2. Darnell Mooney 4.38 (2.55, 1.54)
  3. Randy Moss 4.38 (2.66, 1.52)
  4. Justin Jefferson 4.43 (2.53, 1.57)
  5. Davante Adams 4.56 (2.68, 1.64)
  6. Amon-Ra St. Brown 4.61 (2.64, 1.63)

Christian Watson is also the fastest of this group and has the quickest acceleration. Darnell Mooney and Randy Moss are definitely in the same class, though. This is where you see body type translate to play type. The more svelte guys are faster and get off the line quicker. Guys like Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams win with precision route-running and depend on it to get the separation they can't get from raw speed. It's clear to see how this translates on the field.

Bench Press

  1. Amon-Ra St. Brown 20 reps
  2. Christian Watson 18 reps
  3. Davante Adams 14 reps
  4. Darnell Mooney 9 reps

Did not participate: Justin Jefferson, Randy Moss

Aman-Ra St. Brown managed the most bench press reps out of this group... at least among those who participated (I don't know why Vikings receivers wouldn't want to do the bench press - whatever the reason, I get to brag that I can do more reps than either of them put up at the Combine!). Christian Watson is a couple reps behind St. Brown. Usually, these guys try to win off the line with moves (St. Brown and Adams) or speed (Watson and Mooney), but it's always nice to have a little strength in case a press corner gets their hands dug in.

Vertical and Broad Jump

  1. Christian Watson 38.5", 11'4"
  2. Amon-Ra St. Brown 38.5", 10'7"
  3. Davante Adams 39.5", 10'3"
  4. Justin Jefferson 37.5", 10'6"
  5. Darnell Mooney 37", 10'4
  6. Randy Moss 33", 9'9"

This was a surprising result. Randy Moss made some pretty spectacular jumping catches in his career, but had the lowest recorded vertical in the group according to his RAS score. Maybe (probably) he's capable of jumping higher, but we're going with the consistent RAS score here and not the urban legends of how high he can allegedly jump. In this case, Christian Watson comes out with the highest explosion score (a combination of relative performance on the vertical jump and broad jump). It's interesting that St. Brown and Adams, who had the worst speed ratings of the group, are near the top in explosion scores. This illustrates how different play styles can achieve top results. Of course, Watson is better then all of them in both categories, which shows what a truly unique athlete he is.

Shuttle and 3 cone

  1. Christian Watson 4.19, 6.96
  2. Randy Moss 4.17, 7.19
  3. Amon-Ra St. Brown 4.26, 6.9
  4. Davante Adams 4.3, 6.82

Did not participate: Justin Jefferson, Darnell Mooney

This are drills designed to test agility. Yet again, Watson tops the charts. This is a critical component in open field running, where yards after the catch often depend on cutting ability as much as speed, especially against today's DB-heavy defensive schemes.

Up and down the charts, Christian Watson scores above the best receivers in the division, the league, and in NFL history in terms of athletic profiling.

This is a huge component of how much potential a player has. Whether they reach or not depends on a ton of factors, but when it comes to Christian Watson, the sky is the limit.

Just when I thought I couldn't get MORE excited about the upcoming 2023 Packers season and Christian Watson...

Nice job by Bruce showcasing Watsons numbers against some pretty damn WR's in NFL History. I'll slow my roll a while longer, but if this kid breaks out this year with Love? Oh, it's on a cracking!

Maybe when this happens we can stop talking about how the Vikings stole Justin Jefferson from the Packers and start talking about Gute moving up in a trade WITH the Vikings and getting Watson.

THANK GOD the Vikings didn't have the foresight to figure out Jefferson and Watson would have been an unstoppable duo, EVEN with Kurt Cousins as QB. Instead they traded the pick to the Packers used to select Watson. With that type of draft work I'm sure the Vikings will be 0-63 after this season.

As in ZERO Championships in 63 NFL Seasons.

Nick, I was pumping up Watson pre-draft...a lot. Not moving up to draft Jefferson at #20 (If we could have)...Surely, cost us 1 Super Bowl...However, after watching the AR debacle play out to it's fullest and having a God believing grounded, humble young man in Love....I'm pretty excited for where the Packers go from here. I really liked how he stepped in in the Eagles game and I'm pretty confidant that's what we will see for the most part this season. We will have some ups and downs. If ML does his job and uses the solid run game right, we will not need to be all world thru the air. This will allow ML not to throw too much at our receiver groups plate and bring them along at a slower pace. I honestly have not seen this much receiving talent amassed for us in quite some time. We are 5-7 deep at WR and 2-3 at TE as I see Deguara finally used more in that role also. Yes, Watson has huge upside, has great RB type vision also and sets defenders up and can make them look silly. High hopes in 23' folks.....No drama....GPG

Valuing Walker above Watson was a blatant error. Watson should have been the #22 and saved the Two picks for an OT and TE/WR, foregoing the musical chairs with the offensive line and getting more speed at the TE spot. He hit on Doubs, Rhyan remains a mystery. He was lucky the Purple were incompetent.

Wouldn't the "blatant error" be taking a player at #22 that was ultimately still available a full 22 picks later?

You don't like the Walker pick- and you don't like Gutekunst - understood.. but saying a GM should have taken a player 22 slots earlier than he did is just silly.

CW, has impressive stats & speed and quickness. I hope he gets rid of those end antics. Flying & flips are immature, childlike. Unprofessional could lead to injuries. I hope he steps up & leads the receiver room with encouragement & example. One of the youngest, quickest & fastest group in a long time. Abundance of talent.

Remember, he is just a kid. The coaches better have put the kibosh to that stuff, and I think they did.

"Remember, he is just a kid."

Exactly ... The flip IIRC was after his first NFL TD... IMO it's hard to get down on a guy for that, I mean it only happens once. He was clearly excited, especially after how his season started. That's about how I'd expect a 20 something year old kid to act in that situation.

Are you kidding me? I watched that flip over an over again on dvr! You know how hard it is for a 6'4 208# person with pads on to do a back flip? To me it showed the rest of the league "hey i have arrived and im a freak to be reckoned with!"

Hope he does it again.

Many athletes have done flips. Let them celebrate how they want, although I'd greatly prefer seeing an athletic display than some of the TikTok type dance stuff I've seen.

It's a great celebration right up until you sprain an ankle or lord forbid break something.

Then it's lost playtime that hurts the team for engaging in risky unnecessary antics.

I don't have hatred in my heart for players celebrating like some people do, and I don't fault players for being actual real people doing real people things in their lives, but there is an element of professionalism and responsibility that needs to be instilled in these young men. The reality is you are jeopardizing your team and, to an extent, your career when you decide to do back flips in the endzone.

Speed kills. Just catch the ball.

The Packers ranked towards the bottom of NFL for drops last season. I think it was a combination of new receivers and Rodgers not being able or not participating in practice. The upside to that is that those practices were run by JL. They had a chance to get real familiar with his throws.

Thanks Bruce

So, there’s someone out there that DOESN’T? Why the heck not?

Watson clearly has the athletic attributes to be a “special” receiver.

There are two things that stand in the way.

Number one he needs to stay healthy. Not necessarily his “fault” but staying on the field matters. He’s been dinged a couple of times last season concussion and hamstring if I remember correctly. Hopefully, he can get a little stronger and avoid the injury bug. Some of it is just luck.

Number two he needs to catch the ball. He was good last year but at times he could’ve been better. I think he gets there but more consistently catching the ball will allow him to show off his freakishly good speed and skill.

He needs to catch a 6-yard pass on 3rd and 5 thrown at his shins on a comeback route. That is, he needs to show he can be a chain-mover and a volume receiving threat.

I agree with T7Steve.

While Christian's RAS gives us insight in his possibilities for the future, RAS value does not talk about mental strenght and durability. My opinion is that it is (with some serious injury) the only thing that may produce problem for him.

But, looking how he endured dissaproval of former Packers QB (FPQB), gives high hope that Christian is also very good in that department.

What I hope is that next season Packers will have the most complete and the most deepest WR room in the whole NFL, with players that can make hell for opponents on the field with their unique high talents.

That would gave Jordan Love and MLF so many options for building the unstoppable offense.

GO PACK GO!

Croat, these are all very exciting things to think about. The fact is that after #4 and #12, we have no idea what to expect from our deep passing game. We can speculate about whether they put 5 or 6 WRs on the 53 man rosters, who they dress vs not, if maybe a couple more WRs make the PS, who gets how many targets

The fact is we don't know any of this.

I really like an idea in this article, about being run heavy first and short throws. I'll add that YAC machines like TEs and RBs make more sense for that application, and once that's working consistently a WR or 3 is bound to get wide open somewhere, the next question is can JL10 find him.

It'd be great if we have air raid options by mid season, but it's also true that if it's not there by next year mid-season this can still be a winning team. Bo Melton might develop into a great, even though he isn't standing out yet. 7 WRs is a LOT of depth! I'm hoping we find at least 2 that are consistent targets, with 1 or 2 usable gadget WRs, plus Musgrave as a viable target and Kraft and Deguara both highly effective in the red zone.

Plus our RB room!

MLF has a full chess board to work with, I hope he has a great strategy about how to use it ...

He caught a ball twice in a game against Arizona. Then the Packers lost. That's all I remember.

In fairness, he was hell on wheels as a punt gunner...

He was a good ST Gunner. Maybe he fell out of favor with QB1. CW is the real deal though and our new QB1 will not have issues throwing to him. Doubs seems like more of the possession receiver though, and may get more throws his way.

I'm not sure how he'll compare to those guys eventually, but for 2023 I hope he compares to Lazard.

We're going to miss Lazard. He was our leading receiver with 60 and he was a real asset in the run game. I am actively wondering if we might use Musgrave in a similar manner.

LH, that's how I peg Musgrave too, a combo player. I think of him as more of a big bodied receiver than a typical TE. Can MLF scheme him open?

We have a crossover player in Tariq, a deep LB or a CB who's good close to the LOS. Versatility creates options, but using it successfully creates opportunity for mistakes. There's a LOT riding on this coaching staff ...

Musgrave presents problems. If you line him up with Kraft, Watson, and Doubs, you might be running a double TE but you also might be running a 3 WR set. Then somebody might go in motion. Meanwhile, you've got Watson over there and you'd better pay attention to him.

Or it's a run, and Musgrave is lined up wide, or goes in motion wide, and then blocks Lazard-style on the runs. Or we line him up with Watson-Doubs-Reed and make the defense cover him with an LB underneath. Lots of possibilities with this guy.....I wasn't so surprised we took a TE at #43, but I didn't think it'd be Luke Musgrave. I think it's a good choice.

I liked Lazard. Our quality of WR's is going to be very good...Far above what it has been. His production will easily be eclipsed by better athleticism. His blocking may be missed some but the pass game has moved up a couple notches also...it will even out and when these guys gain snaps in the NFL we will be a machine on offense in 2024.

This is not a knock on Lazard, but we're not going to miss Lazard's 60 catches. He got his targets as a function of a QB who has trust issues and generally doesn't utilize young talent to its fullest.

There is far more talent at WR on this roster than Lazard possessed that will be getting those 60 reps. I feel the WR room is actually pretty stacked.

I agree the Packers will miss his blocking, however.
