"Chips Report" In Packers Win Vs. Vikings

Chad Clifton played well and Aaron Rodgers played poorly, but who else earned our weekly designations in the Packers 28-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings?

Our weekly designations from the Green Bay Packers'...

Blue Chips

  • Nick Collins–His interception on Brett Favre was a work of art. To be able to make a play on the ball was just an athletic feat, and the timing was even better. With the Vikings driving into Packers territory in the fourth quarter down by a score, the interception stoned Minnesota and a was an integral part to the Packers victory. Collins also had six tackles, including one for a loss and two passes defensed.
  • Chad Clifton–It was a winning performance for the entire offensive line, but Clifton in particular deserves to be singled out. It was Clifton's absence in both losses to the Vikings a year ago that contributed to Minnesota collecting 14 sacks against the Packers. As for tonight, he handled Jared Allen with aplomb as the Vikings didn't record a single sack and only hit Aaron Rodgers three times all night long.

Red Chips

  • Brandon Jackson–Jackson only had 13 carries, but he made the most of them with 58 yards for a 4.5-yard average. Of course, his touchdown opened up the scoring to put the Packers on top 7-0. He also contributed 3 catches for 46 yards, one of them going for a long of 36. Jackson was a major contributor to the success of the Packers in several phases of the game.
  • C.J. Wilson–For a rookie thrust into a tough situation on a big stage at a position dealing with injuries, Wilson came away smelling like a rose. Wilson got gouged in the run game a couple times, but he made up for it with a stuff of Adrian Peterson in the fourth quarter and a hit on Brett Favre on Desmond Bishop's interception. He was second on the team with 8 tackles. Given the myriad injuries on the defensive line, it looks as if Wynn will continue to play a large role as the season progresses.

Cow Chips

  • Aaron Rodgers–Rodgers helped make up for his two interceptions with two touchdown passes, but the quarterback continues to regress. After throwing only 7 interceptions a year ago, Rodgers has already surpassed that mark with 9 not even halfway through this season. His interception thrown into the arms of Jared Allen was inexcusable. He also wasn't on the same page as some of his wide receivers on a couple of passes along the sidelines.
  • Run defense–It's nearly impossible to single out any one player as nearly everyone had their share of faults. At one time or another Desmond Bishop, A.J. Hawk, Jarius Wynn, Charles Woodson and Charlie Peprah–among others–were guilty of getting gashed by Adrian Peterson and the Vikings run game.

The defense was amazing and I made that quote up.

I would give MM a Red Chip. His play calling on the first dive was outstanding. Screens, delayed handoffs etc. For a second I thought he may have been reading some post from this sight. His play calling in the Fourth once again almost lost us the game but overall way better than the previous weeks.

Props to Pat Lee for looking like a real kick returner.
Also, James Jones had a very good game tonight. I've been down on Jones lately. He's the most muscular/bulky WR we have, yet he's almost always catching the ball along the sidelines. Does he have a problem going over the middle? Not sure. He did have one reception over the middle today. He also tends to drop too many balls and he seems to fumble too frequently. Today he didn't switch the ball to his outside hand when running down the sidelines.
Bishop is for real. I say he starts over Hawk next year. I don't even think Hawk will be back.

i agree. hopefully lee gets better as the year goes on. he had a couple of good returns tonight. jones really stepped up his game tonight and we needed him to considering the fact that driver was playing hurt. the jury is in on bishop- this guy has been playing lights out. he's the real deal!

mccarthy gets a cow chip for not challenging the jennings reception for a 1st down in the 3rd quarter. also, why not run more screens to jackson? the one that they did run was VERY effective. also, bring back the short slants. you don't always have to go for the gold on every play mikey!

No. I don't think we should trade Hawk. I like all three middle linebackers; all three of them are amazing. the problem is that there is too much talent for everyone to be happy. I think that they should do rotating games. Don't rotate them during games, that ruins consistency, Rotate games; two games on, one game off.

That and the only relevant jersey I have is Hawk's

Blue Chip: Disciplined play (can you give "chips to things other than players?).

From memory, only one false start, no pass interference calls...maybe a few holding thrown in there. Great job.

I disagree with putting the run defense in cow chips. Sure, they gave up 131 yards on 28 carries to Peterson for a 4.7 yards per carry average. That being said, they didn't give up the big play on the ground, which is quite significant, especially when you're playing the best back in the game who's getting 28 carries. We stopped the run to the point where we made Favre beat us, and he obviously failed in doing so. With all the injuries at DL and LB, I cannot complain with the outcome.

How about Mike McCarthy for a cow chip? He was successful on challenges, but he didn't challenge Jennings' third down catch at the beginning of the fourth quarter that was obviously a first down. On the next play, he runs Kuhn up the middle for the second straight fourth down play on the drive. Had it not been for Collins' interception on the Vikings' next drive, this sequence could have lost us the game.

If Jones would have laid out on his big reception, he might have had six. I think that's what jennings was telling him in the celebration.

Even w/CM3 back, our defense is really, really thin. I'm sure that is part of the problem w/the run. How many plays did Lang play? 6-8?? Sheeesh!

Totally agreed. Given how thin the Packers are at LB and DL, I can't agree with a cow chip in run D against AP.

Cow chip for the officiating crew. Those two obvious non-touchdowns by the Vikings should have been caught during live action instead of replay. Thank god for McCarthy's challenge.

Undoubtedly. Though as is mentioned below, the non-calls against the Vikings O-line holding, the ball placement to set up the second 4th-and-1, and blowing the whistle before Kuhn was done driving really helped out Minnesota at the end there.

They could have challenged. They didn't. If they want to be steamed at someone, it has to be Childress, rather than the officiating crew.

Doh, I responded without being sure of which "TD that wasn't" that you were talking about and suddenly realized it. Obviously, Childress should have challenged the Quarless TD, the ball was moving. The one that McCarthy challenged and was overturned, if you watch the ball, it changes positions in the receivers hands because it hits the ground. Even if he had it strongly in his hands, the ball still hit the ground and moved during the "process" of the catch.

Honestly one of the best games I can remember, despite some sloppy play from both sides. The sheer number of referee blunders nearly ruined it, particularly missed holds and facemasks on Clay Matthews and nearly sinking the Packers' chances by blowing short Kuhn's attempt to drive over the pile on fourth down.

Still, Packers players showed up - Nick Collins, Donald Lee, James Jones, B.J. Raji, Clay Matthews, Greg Jennings, Chad Clifton and A.J. Hawk all turned in big plays when it mattered. With the notable and unfortunate exception of Aaron Rodgers who made some mistakes that defied belief, the rest of the Packers' big-time players and a number of their younger guys stepped up when it mattered to just eek out a win and send Brett Favre home from Lambeau Field a loser for (hopefully) the last time. Awesome game.

Blue chip: All O-Liners. Really happy with their performance this Sunday, they stepped their game up
Red chip: Greg Jennings. Did you see that double- ... heck ...tripple-move for his TD? Where has that been earlier this year?
Cow chip: The Packers. Because they made me nervous for the whole game, especially during the last drive. This looked so much like those last close games, where the Packers rushed 3, dropped 8 into coverage and still gave up huge plays in the passing game. My guts were very sure that BF would beat us (and he nearly did on that Harvin throw). Luckily my guts have sh*t for brain ;-)

If there isn't a QB controversy in MN there probably should be. BF put in a monumental effort, but his gimpy ankle impacted about every other throw. Chilly stuck with him, and it cost the Vikings the game.

Brad Jones had a silent, but productive game at OLB. He is a scrappy player.

Hard to get onto anyone about the defense stopping the run game when you don't have a defensive line and you are playing against a running back like AP.

I liked the way MM coached the game, EXCEPT is management of field position and time of possession. How many 3rd and shorts did the Pack go for a long pass play? That drives me nuts, get the first down. Keep that injury depleted defense off the field, more important BF.

I think McCarthy deserves a Red Chip for this game. He helped out the O-line immensely with his play calling, brought back some of the running game, and made a brilliant call to fake the FG. Plus, how often does he get BOTH challenges in his favor??

The only thing keeping him from a Blue Chip was his 3rd-down short yardage play calling and the second 4th-and-1 call.

Last week, it was mentioned how I'd really like to be able to feel some gratitude towarwds Favre---NOW I CAN!!! Thanks for yet more great Memories, Brett!!

I have been very critical of MM for the last several weeks & he has ended up with a cow chip more than once. I gotta say, he called a pretty good game. Sure, going back to the exact same play on the 2nd 4th & 1 was sort of predictable--had they faked to Kuhn and pitched outside to Nance, it looked like he coulda run untouched to about Appleton. But oveerall, he mixed it up pretty well--loved the TE screens. If we're going to heap blame on MM for calling sh!tty games, we gotta give him credit when he deserves it.

Wow. Rodgers gets a cow chip? The dude couldn't have been under more pressure in terms of getting that monkey off his back. The J.A. interception was just flukey. It shouldn't have happened, but it was just weird. The other int was poor as well, although Frank Walker should have easily been called with P.I. or holding. Rodgers remained poised even after making mistakes and kept drives alive. It's really hard to determine who was at fault for the miscommunications on all those back-shoulder throw disconnects. Was it him or the wideouts? I'd give MM another cow chip instead of Rodgers...and Tramon Williams gets a red chip for me just barely over Nick Collins - although I certainly can't disagree with Collins.

First of all, your reply to my comment on the other thread had me laughing pretty hard - just had to throw that out there.

MM cow chip in part because no one really deserves a cow chip. But, he didn't challenge what really appeared to be a first down - so then he had to go for it on 4th. I just can't figure out why he ran Kuhn at the Williams wall. The first success was flukey, as he was stopped and fell forward in a hole that should have been filled by a lazy Viking defender. I think the Viking defender thought the play was over and stopped.

But seriously, I can't think of anyone that had an AWFUL game (besides Favre :)

It's not that hard to figure out who was to blame. If it was just one receiver that Rodgers had problems with, you could easily say it was the receiver and nobody would know. Since it was almost every receiver, there's only one person that can be blamed.

Even if you did want to shift some of the blame to the receivers, as the play-caller, it's Rodgers duty to ensure that all of the players know what they are doing. So even if, on all of those plays, the receivers did the wrong thing, that goes back to Rodgers as well.

All I know about the back shoulder issue is that the only player involved in all of those miscues was Aaron Rodgers. So he must share some of the blame.

Part of the reason that Rodgers had only 7 INT's last year was that he held onto the ball and didn't take chances. This year, he SAID that he and the coaches wanted him to take more risks. With those risks come additional INT's. You can't have it both ways. Either take chances or hold the ball and take the sack.

We won. Rodgers threw for 295 years and 2 TD's. He outperformed Favre statistically and unlike Favre, DID NOT cost his team the game. He got the Favre monkey off his back. Regress? Not really. Last year, he lost twice to the Vikings. This year, he's the one on top. I'll take that over a "perfect" performance resulting in a loss.

Agreed. It's like it's never good enough. People bitch saying he is a stat boy and plays amazing yet we still lose. Then when we win and his stats aren't perfect, he's 'regressed'.

I thought he played well. The pick to Jared Allen was a fluke. Then the second one was just a risky throw but Jennings had been having a good night so he took the chance.

Other than that the missed thows were miscommunications with WR's not bad throws neccessarily.

It's more inexcusible having McCarthey almost lose us the game again with his inept play calling in the second half.

AR "the quarterback continues to regress" ...... Who decided this? ..... I prefer to look at it as the natural ups & downs of an NFL QB .... Ask Drew Brees ..... AR played well enough to win & he did.

Completely agree.

The most worrisome thing with Rodgers to me was the happy feet. That can completely ruin a QB.

He showed great poise last night in the pocket. It helps that the OL was great, but in past games, even when the OL held their own, he still was awfully nervous in the pocket.

BC, I can't agree that Rodgers "continues to regress." I actually thought he was better last night in a couple areas. I thought he did a better job at recongizing just how much pressure there was. I don't think he prematurely jetted from the pocket like he does at times. And I think he made some nice throws when he was under pressure.

The 2 picks were poor decisions, but the Vikings D made nice plays on both. The D could have dropped them both. If Rodgers played every game this year like he did last night, we'd have 1 or 2 more wins. If he plays like that every game from here on out, we can win some games.
