"Chips Report" from Packers Week 6 Win at Dolphins
Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers came up big in the Packers' come-from-behind 27-24 victory in Miami against the Dolphins on Sunday.
Our weekly "Chips Report" will always include two blue chips (outstanding, exceptional play), two red chips (good, though maybe not great) and two cow chips (dud performances). From the Green Bay Packers' 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins...
Blue Chips
- Quarterback Aaron Rodgers—In the face of most heat any opponent has applied against the Packers this season, Aaron Rodgers thrived in a pressure-packed environment. Despite enduring three sacks and six official quarterback hits (that felt like more), the Packers quarterback directed his team to an impressive fourth-quarter, come-from-behind victory. Each touchdown was a work of art unto itself, from the play-action fake to Jordy Nelson on the opening drive of the game to buying time with his feet and finding Randall Cobb in the third quarter to hitting Andrew Quarless with the game on the line. Finishing the game with 263 yards through the air, 34 on the ground, three touchdowns and no interceptions, Rodgers showed once again why he's one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
- Wide receiver Jordy Nelson—For the fourth time this season, Nelson had at least nine receptions and for the third time, he eclipsed 100 yards. His first-quarter touchdown catch gave the Packers a quick 7-0 lead one drive into the game. Nelson was Rodgers' security blanket all game long, and made no bigger reception than the fourth-and-10 conversion to keep the drive alive on the final Packers possession of the game. Another third-down conversion the drive before to help set up the field goal to pull the Packers within 24-20 was clutch as well.
Red Chips
- Wide receiver Davante Adams—With a career-high six receptions for 77 yards, Adams appeared to gain the full trust of Rodgers for the first time and it couldn't have come at a better time. On a day when only five players caught passes from Rodgers, the Packers still don't have a big number of weapons for their quarterback to exploit. It was a heads-up play by the rookie to be on the same page as Rodgers on the penultimate play of the game. Adams didn't quit on the fake spike and gained 12 yards up the right sideline, eventually stepping out of bounds to stop the clock.
- Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix—In his short time with Green Bay, Clinton-Dix has become a more reliable safety than M.D. Jennings could ever dream to be. He made a team-leading seven tackles, several of them dropping the ball carrier cold in his tracks. He cleaned up a good play by the front seven to record his 10-yard tackle for a loss and did a nice job breaking up a pass. The Packers' first round draft pick didn't allow any throws to go over his head either.
Cow Chips
- Linebacker Clay Matthews—Matthews batted down a pass in the fourth quarter that made just about his only positive contribution of the game. For an athletic linebacker that should be an asset against the read-option, Matthews' aggressiveness worked against him when Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill ran for 49 yards on just three attempts. As a pass rusher, Matthews was also a non-factor, seemingly neutralized by the Dolphins offensive line no matter if he tried to speed rush off the edge or stunt up the middle. He wasn't credited with a single tackle.
- Linebacker Brad Jones—Starting inside linebacker Jamari Lattimore wasn't having a good outing when he exited the game with a neck injury, responsible for the Packers' blocked punt and missing a tackle, but Jones—who entered the game as a backup—was even worse. One nice tackle on a dump off pass to Lamar Miller and a pass defensed couldn't make up for several poor run fits, a crucial missed tackle that led to the Dolphins' go-ahead, fourth-quarter touchdown and an illegal hands to the face penalty that wiped out a would-be sack on that same drive.

Sorry, but Brad Jones was much better than Lattimore today. Not because he was good but because Lattimore was beyond terrible today.
And, I'd rather put Bulaga in the cow chip category. Terrible, almost as bad as that Seattle game when he gave up the 4 sacks.

Lattimore went out of the game in what the 2nd quarter? Other then the bad block on the punt team I didn't see anything bad about his play.

Well his "Olê" on the blocked punt puts him in the cow shit chip without question.

Jones looked much better than AJ Hawk...if that guy knows the defense so well, why then dont the Packers put him in the coaching booth? i'd rather see Dix at ILB

The Packers Tackles never seem to play well in the Miami heat. I'm very happy they left this game with a win.

Nothing new about Matthews getting baited. He's got to clean it up.
The ILB position is so bad that I wouldn't mind seeing Peppers and Neal at OLB, and slide Matthews inside, as the basic 3-4 starting lineup. If this team is going to make a run in the play-offs they simply have got to shore up the middle. CM3 can cover, he can stunt from the middle, he can spy the QB from the middle, and just maybe being stuck inside would keep him from biting upfield so hard.

Even though it will never happen that's a good idea. Maybe with Newton coming to town and just Jones to man the middle with Hawk it will be considered. Matthews has been biting hard all year.

I used to be against CM3 going inside for a lot of snaps, but with Lattimore out (for who knows?) and seeing Brad Jones again (ugh) I wouldn't mind it all. He has the agility, aggressiveness and athleticism that all of our MLBs lack. Peppers/Neal/Perry should be fine at OLB.
I'm kind of looking at Perry like I look at Starks. Injury prone, but very effective when limiting his snaps.

I have also suggested that CMIII play some inside, as we have better talent at OLB than at ILB. As a note, on a couple of running plays and QB keepers, CMIII properly kept outside contain but Daniels crashed down too far inside a few times.

I wanted to say the same exact thing in regards to having C.Matthews play ILB.

Clay Nitschke?
Anyone?
I've been saying it for a while now. I seem to remember the idea of "Clay Nitschke" "manning the middle" not going over all that well here. Good to see all you all could make it.

We won't hear from him today. He's upset the Packers won.
To go 8-8, the team would now need to finish 4-6. No way this happens. Six more home games on the schedule.

Besides cooler Dec temps, I'm not sure it is accurate to describe what happened as "the Packers melted"
The defense was not very good in the 2nd half, for sure. But they only played about 23 minutes on the game. When they allegedly started to "melt" was after about 8 or 9 minutes on the field. That's not enough time for pro football players to get spent. What happened to them was more likely due to losing Lattimore, Shields and Williams midgame, after starting it down Datone Jones already. They did come up with the final big stop to get the offense the ball back for the game winning drive.
Special teams, which sucked early, actually chipped in a nice return on the ensuing punt after that big defensive stop to make the game winner a shorter drive.
And the offense scored 10 points in the final 5 minutes. They were at their best in the 4th quarter.
I hope the Packers "melt" like that the final 5 minutes of every game...where all 3 phases contribute something to a win.

Can you prove this is not true?

Jeez, the man is entitled to his prediction. You're treating this like he's putting a curse on the team. Some people are just pessimistic--it's how they roll. Just win the next game. My prediction: Pack will roll over Carolina, who will freeze up in GB: 31-17. Feel better?

Yes, but he needs to be more careful with the facts. Miller and Moreno combined for 63 yards on 20 carries, for an average of 3.15 yard/carry. The defensive line was not a sieve. Tannehill's 40 yard run makes the rush defense look bad. IIRC, Daniels got sucked too far inside on the 40-yard play. CMIII kept outside contain, but he did seem slow to close. I attributed that to a possible inability to change direction as well as normal due to his groin injury, but fear that I am making excuses, since I have seen this play breakdown before many times.

the way he is playing at the moment would call for him getting the start over Matthews. But I guess that will never happen, as some players will always have their spot on the team, no matter how bad they play. But I am encouraged to see how well Perry is developing this year.

Jones' play in 2014 means it is already dead money, IMO. Dead money being defined as cap expenditures which don't contribute to the on the field product.
With 2015 being the last year of his deal, I'm all for spending an extra 300k (or so) on a younger player that might develop. Jones can sit at home or ply his craft elsewhere while he cashes his guaranteed base salary checks from GB.

COW is really showing his purple today, what a joke this guy is, I saw today an ELITE QB Aaron Rodgers show why he is one of the best with better things to come, I saw a tough road win against a very good fast defense, and I see improved safety play and the rise of another young receiver, lets enjoy it and stop feeding into this ASS COW.

The Dolphins were the 5th top 10 defense the Packers have played this year, and 3rd on the road.
3-2 against top 10 defenses is great.
Only @Minny,@Buffalo, New England, and Detroit remain on the schedule as far as top 10 defenses this season.
Given the current success, it's not hard to imagine the Packers only losing 1 of those 4 games (my money is on @Buffalo) and winning against the rest of the schedule to finish 13-3.
The Packers are averaging almost 27 PPG (26.8) despite facing a top 10 defense in 5 of 6 contests and only playing 2 home games thus far.
Things are looking great for this team.

Hey, let look on the bright side. We beat our Kryptonite today. Coming in today, we were 3-10 vs. the Dolphins all time, our worst percentage against any of the 31 other teams. After we lost our two starting CB's early in the second half, I thought we were toast. This team has heart...and Rodgers. Just enjoy the W.
