Cheesehead TV Matchup: Week 9 Offense

  • Bring back Falcon and Rhino

With the weather starting to turn this would be a good week to feature the Falcon and Rhino formations that McCarthy unveiled in 2007. We haven't seen a whole lot of the inverted-wishbone-type formation this season, but when we have they have been pretty effective, particularly against the 3-4 defense.

Notice in the clip below how Rodgers scans the defense and then makes an adjustment to the playcall. (You can see him flip his hand toward the left side of the formation as he turns toward the backs to make sure Jackson has the call)

The line does a good job of executing the zone-blocking scheme here save for Scott Wells. If Wells just holds his block, this is a much bigger gain. Crabtree does a great job of cutting the linebacker and springing Jackson for a good gain on first down.

This is what McCarthy needs to start using a lot more of as the year goes on. A lot has been made of the offense struggling to find an identity since Jermichael Finley was lost for the season. The last time the Packers featured this formation prominently was in 2007 - before Finley was on the team. A healthy dose is in order now.

  • Turst Swain In Your Multiple WR Packages

Last week against the Jets, especially after Donald Driver left the game due to his lingering quad problems, Brett Swain was given a chance from scrimmage. The third year player surprised me with a strong showing. Despite only catching one ball (see below) he played a good overall game.

Swain did a good job sustaining blocks in the running game and generally did a good job of getting out into his routes and making the proper adjustments. There was one play in particular where Rodgers looked at Swain after a play was over as if to say "Sorry I didn't see you there"

I don't expect Swain to come in and put up big numbers, but McCarthy shouldn't be afraid to use him. The guy is ready.

I see you have a video for "Hawk exposed in zone". Are you going to post a defensive analysis?

As for the offense, I totally agree with what you have said here and what you said on Packers Transplants. Crabtree and Swain should be given more opportunities this week with Driver being out.
