A Third Round Pick and Chester Taylor

That’s according to “a person we talked to”, the ‘we’ being Kevin Seifert of the NFC North blog over at ESPN.com, who has actually been doing excellent work this month. (But note to Kevin: Please retire the use of the royal ‘we’). Is it credible? Who cares anymore. At this point, I could see a headline that said “Favre traded to Montreal Alouettes for a case of Moosehead” and I wouldn’t blink twice. Besides, Seifert works for ESPN. I work for an alternative asset management company. I’m sure his sources are better than mine.

Most of the trade scenarios I’ve heard floated have involved either a mid-level pick that could rise as high as a second rounder if Favre plays well, to a you-must-be-dreaming scenario of the Vikings offering one of the Williams’ defensive tackles AND a pick. That, my friends, will never happen. But a third round pick and Chester Taylor? That at least is in the realm of possibility, and would perhaps entice Alan Herman to shut his face, as he is STILL barking into the phone about Ryan Grant’s contract to any reporter who calls.

An Open Letter To Ted Thompson

Dear Mr. Thompson,

I realize you don’t read this blog. But on the off chance you happen to be surfing the net late tonight and stumble upon this here post, I’d like to express something to you that you may hear quite a little bit over the next few days.

Let him go.

That’s right. Give him the release he and his bumpkin agent have been trying to get since last season. It’s obvious now that the league is on Brett’s side, what with the Commissioner stepping in and all. And I realize you worry, as is understandable, about the nightmare that will ensue PR-wise if and when Favre signs with the Vikings.

But here’s the thing.

You’ll beat him. And not just on opening night, but again on November 9th. You have the better team, and you know it. The Vikings went and got Jared Allen. How did he do against Chad Clifton last year? Oh that’s right. Cliffy stoned him. The Vikings were picked to go to the Super Bowl by Paul Zimmerman over at SI.com? Let you in on a little secret. Last year he picked the Saints. Yeah, the ones that didn’t make the playoffs.

Let him go Ted. And no, I’m not one of those people who’s been bashing your handling of this thing. Just read the last month or so of this blog. I’m in your corner. Favre had a great year last year - right up until it mattered. And the success he did have? More to do with your coach than with Favre himself. And that’s another thing. Have you watched what Favre looked like when Darrell Bevel was his quarterbacks coach? That’s right. Just slightly better than Kyle Orton. (Who finally got his revenge by outplaying Favre last year, by the way) And who would be calling the plays? Brad Childress. That right there is worth 14 points. For the Packers.

So please Ted, let him go. Yes, the media will say you blinked. Your team will have to deal with a circus for a few weeks. Until opening night when you whoop Favre’s ass.

I’m not sure how those Vikings fans are reacting, but they can’t seriously call that thing a football stadium. It looks more like a space pod or a giant blob of protoplasm. Rather than sports, I think it’s a biosphere where hazardous experiments are carried out.

Yeah, it’s called Brad Childress’ offense…

How Do Call Records Prove Anything?

Packergeeks cite a Pro Football Talk report about the possibility of the Packers having records for a phone given to Favre by the Packers, the intimation being that this is the evidence the Packers are using in their grievance against the Vikings.

If that is the case, and that is all the Packers have, I don’t think the league will do much of anything. Even if those records show he called Brad Childress’ number directly, how on Earth do the Packers prove what was talked about? Or even that Childress was the one on the line? Is it suspicious? Of course. But can you prove anything with it? Hardly.

The only way the Packers have a case is if the league finds, or they provide, emails between individuals in the Viking organization specifically discussing acquiring Favre. Remember, the 49ers were disiplined by the leage for tampering with Lance Briggs on the strength of email evidence.

So unless the Packers are working with the US Government, and have recordings of the phone calls that were reportedly made by Favre to Viking headquarters, they can’t prove a thing absent an incriminating email or someone in the Viking organization pulling a Judas.
