…and now Bigby is doubtful.
Hate to say it, but I really don’t think it would have made a difference.
…and now Bigby is doubtful.

Bigby’s return is, of course, a great development for the Packers struggling defense. They need all the help they can get. But I can’t stop the nagging feeling from deep down in dark places that only cause misery and despair when they are visited, that LeRoy Butler in his prime could take the field on Sunday, but Bob Sanders and his Magical Schemes Of Ineptitude would ensure that Butler was used in the most ineffective manner possible.
Completely agree with Andy here on the Packers missing Atari Bigby. Peprah and Rouse have been absolutely pathetic while he’s been out. Rouse’s play against Dallas was particularly shocking after the strong showings he put in last season against the Lions and the Panthers.
Bigby simply has to get back on the field. He is quickly becoming the Packers version of Colts safety Bob Sanders.
Toward the end of last season, I was a vocal proponent for Aaron Rouse to take the starting free safety job from Nick Collins. Then, this past offseason, I told anyone who would listen that there was no doubt Rouse would beat out Collins in training camp. Then preseason came and went and we were told that Rouse was not consistent enough to pry a starting safety job away from either Collins or Atari Bigby.
Well, now that Bigby will most likely miss Sunday night’s game against the Cowboys, Rouse will have an opportunity to make amends for his horrible performance in place of an injured Bigby during the second half of the Lions game. And when I say ‘horrible’ - I mean shockingly inept for a guy I thought looked like a sure-fire starter after playing against the Lions and Panthers last year. Here’s hoping Rouse and the coaching staff get his many mistakes from this past Sunday (taking bad angles to the ball, ducking his head when trying to tackle, etc) corrected before Sunday night.
It’s been awhile, but here in the depths of the worst, most boring part of the NFL offseason is my official ‘Good, Bad and Ugly’ - without the Ugly - from the latest Packer mini-camp report. (Yes, I am now reduced to observing and commenting on the observations of others for practices that the media doesn’t even get to see most of…)
The Good:
Aaron Rogers
Aaron Rodgers, for the most part, sounds like he’s delivering just what you’d expect. Some nice throws, some mistakes, but overall he’s being efficient with the football. Maybe the hope for Packer fans should simply be that points the Packers don’t score because of the loss of Favre’s brilliant playmaking are offset by Rodgers taking better care of the football, thereby giving the opposing offense fewer opportunities to score. Or something like that.
The Bad:
Defending the Tight End
It’s nice to read that Rodgers is throwing 16 yard touchdown passes, until you realize that he’s throwing them to the starting tight-end in double-coverage supplied by Atari Bigby and Brady Poppinga. Some things never change…
Always nice to see McCarthy and his staff get some national recognition.
Peter King today in his Monday Morning Quarterback column, mentions the great job McCarthy’s staff has done coaching up players like Atari Bigby, Donald Lee and Johnny Jolly. Bigby and Lee were taken off the scrap heap of the NFL (Bigby was cut by both Miami and the Jets, while Lee was claimed off waivers after getting cut by the Dolphins) and Jolly was a 6th round pick. But in all three cases, the Packer coaching staff has done a wonderful job of coaching their guys up and getting them ready to not only play, but to start.
One other note, I just love the fact that the Packers let David Martin go in Free Agency, where he signed with the Dolphins, while Donald Lee, a better, more consistent player, was picked up by the Packers for almost nothing. Of course, Lee has gone on to sign a nice extension, at a very Packer friendly price, while the Dolphins gave Martin stupid guaranteed money, and he has thanked the Dolphins organization by getting hurt, just like Packer fans everywhere could have told Miami he would.
Thank you Nick Saban and Cam Cameron…
One of the many great benefits of having Packer World up and running is being able to monitor news basically as it happens. So, I see that there is a new article on packers.com. It’s my favorite kind. Highlight videos. Last season’s 5 best by packers.com polling data. A must see.
“Favorite Fives” of 2007: Play of the Year.
Having seen 2 of the 5 plays live, Donald Driver TD against the Giants was a trace more exciting than the Tramon Williams punt return TD if only because it was a playoff game and we needed the boost and Double D willed it to happen.
The other interesting note is that Favre is only truly responsible for 1 of those plays…and it’s the one that has the most questions for Aaron Rodgers.
