Mike McCarthy during yesterday’s presser:
We have a lot of work to do. I say it all the time, and I mean it. We’ll correct it with the players tomorrow. It’s important to get it corrected. We don’t ever sweep anything under the rug around here. That will never change, because we feel like we’re going to go into a hornet’s nest up there in Detroit with their home opener.
He’s right of course. The Packers’ performance during Monday night’s game was hardly optimum, on any level. In fact, about the only two players you could grade out as having nearly perfect games were the two Aarons - Rodgers and Kampman. And even their efforts can be improved upon.
McCarthy has a long list of things he wants to work on, I have no doubt, but if he’s looking for suggestions he could do worse than BratsandBeerGuy’s suggested To Do List. It covers the major points that the team needs to address, the most important of which is the inability of the defense to get off the field on third down. Where I would differ with my esteemed fellow blogger is item number 4 - Opening Up the Playbook.
B&BG writes:
Overall it was a pretty conservative gameplan MM used last night, an understandable strategy given it was Aaron Rodgers’ first start. Next week against Detroit I would expect to see a little more variation and more aggressive play calling leading into the Dallas game.
I understand the impulse, but I think following it would be a mistake. Perhaps we’ll see a few more multiple receiver formations, but as I wrote last week, McCarthy needs to keep things tight and heavy formation-wise the first couple of games. The Packers don’t need to open things up against Detroit to win. Now Dallas and Indianapolis? That’s a different story.
Believe it or not, the Packers have bigger problems than Brett Favre heading into 2008. (And boy did it feel good not typing that name even once in that last post…) If you think about it, however the Favre drama plays out, the Packers will have added value to their team that wasn’t there last month, whether it be the addition of Favre’s playing services or an extra draft pick or two.
No, the bigger problem for the Packers is the fact that their defensive line could be in big trouble in 2008. Johnny Jolly’s issues, coupled with KGB and Justin Harrell’s injury problems, on top of the loss of Corey Williams, leaves the strength of the defense in 2007 in a precarious position. Despite the reports that the Packers will be blitzing more this season, the defense is still run by Bob Sanders, who never met a vanilla scheme he didn’t like. And all those vanilla schemes need exceptional play up front, and right now, ‘exceptional’ is not a word I’d apply to anyone on Green Bay’s defensive line other than Aaron Kampman and Ryan Pickett.
Aaron Kampman vs. Kareem McKenzie
Giants right tackle Kareem McKenzie did a decent job against the Buccaneers, although he gave up a sack, and really played an excellent game against the Cowboys and their 3-4 defense. But Aaron Kampman is the best end he’ll have faced in the playoffs. Going back and watching the match-up from Week Two, Kampman gave McKenzie fits with his quick release up-field, getting the tackle to commit to the outside, and then using inside leverage and a bull rush to collapse the pocket on quarterback Eli Manning. From the little I saw of the Giants in the regular season, and the two playoff games so far, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride doesn’t give his tackles much more than a back chipping out of the backfield for help, which would be a major mistake against Kampman this week. I expect to see some of the rookie TE Boss lined up to Kampman’s side to help McKenzie. Should the Packers grab an early lead, look for Kampman to make McKenzie’s life miserable as Gilbride sacrifices protection by bringing in extra receivers to try to take advantage of Green Bay’s safeties in man coverage.
Congrats to Brett Favre for being named the starting quarterback for the NFC Pro Bowl roster. Congrats as well to Al Harris for finally, FINALLY, making it as a starter and not an alternate. And as well to Aaron Kampman for a well deserved trip. Not bad for a 5th round throw-in pick, huh? Donald Driver trip as a reserve is well desereved as well.
It’s a minor surprise that Charles Woodson isn’t at least an alternate. But the shock to me is that Nick Barnett is not even a reserve. That, in a word, is ridiculous.
| Love it. It does not get any better than this.
