Capers Dials It Up

Interesting numbers here from ESPN:

In the first half of the season, Capers devoted five or more players to the pass rush on 40.6 percent of the Packers’ defensive snaps. Against the Cowboys, that number elevated to more than half (51.3).

That's a monster jump. On the one hand, I'm thrilled to see it. On the other hand, what took so long? Perhaps, as Greg Bedard famously pointed out in our Twitter Battle last summer, the guys really DID take 6-8 games to figure it out and now, emboldened by what he sees from his chargers, Capers has finally felt comfortable enough to let them loose. Or, perhaps, after watching film of his four man rush getting eaten alive by the Buccaneer offensive line and made to look silly by a rookie quarterback, Capers finally got the hint that he would need to manufacture pressure if the quarterback was to be hit.

Whatever the reason, it's a welcome change and I hope it's the beginning of a trend and not a one-week gameplan.

I am (very) cautiously optimistic that Capers will continue to attack. If so, we can expect more excitement, if not always wins.

I personally hope he gameplans each game individually. I don't think a lot of blitzing is necessary every week...but I do think the QB has to be pressured regardless of the rushers. If he thinks that they can do it with 4, all the better. This week called for more...and I loved it.

I would urge you all to check out profootballfocus.com. The site goes into ridiculous detail about things like who lines up where on every single play, and hands out grades to every single player, for every single game. I have no idea where they get their info, or if it is 100% accurate. But it's cool.
----------
Hopefully yesterday's blitzing success will, at the very least, give upcoming OCs some headaches in gameplanning. At the very most, I'd like to see continued success. Gotta love a great performance against a very good team.

The only negative (besides penalties) about the win on Sunday, was the fact it showed how out of position Kampman is. I feel the difference this game besides great individual play was the fact we had another outside LB who could can play all phases of the game, even if he was just average in play it made our defense very unpredictable. You never new where the pressure was coming from. When Kampman is in, our defense is more predictable and if the QB does get introuble he just dumps a pass on Kampman's side

Do you think this might have as much to do with the secondary as it does the linebackers? I think Capers had to wait to blitz until the safeties and corners could handle picking up the WR's and TE's that were left in the voids created by the guys blitzing. Otherwise you get hammered by a QB with a quick release.

Ha-haa! Bush ran into a brick wall on that play. But, he was nearer to a QB than I ever thought possible. What a defense!!!

All aspects of the defense are important, yes the secondary must be sharp. But this was the Dallas Cowboys with Witten and the running backs they have you have to have good cover guys off the line of scrimmage to deny that short dump off pass to avoid the blitzing. I was not sure we had an answer to Witten, but we did.

Wow, Ruppert - that site is loffly. You best believe it'll be part of my Wednesday write-ups from now on. Whoosh.
-
How nice it was to see defensive players out there keyed up and making plays. It's great that Capers gave them a gameplan that allowed them to make plays. Please sir, can I have some more?

No, man. Jarrett Bush played the game, and we almost shut them out. THAT'S how good the game plan was. We beat Dallas BADLY with sometimes 10 man on the field.

Holly, anything I can do to help out the already-best-in-class Packers opponent preview!

Here's the shocking thing - Bush actually had good position and overall coverage on a couple plays. How the Cowboys couldn't exploit him more, I'll never know.

As I mentioned in the live blog, albeit in a much more intoxicated manner, it was refreshing to have a DC keep the pressure on late in the game with a 17 point lead instead of resting on his laurels. I'm sure he wanted to get the shutout for his defense, but in the past, Packer DCs have time and time again allowed teams to make things interesting late in games by sitting back in obvious passing situations and letting the defense get carved up by QBs with all kinds of time.
-------------------------

I still don't like Tramon Williams matched up against the other team's biggest receiver(Rice, Williams), but other than that, the scheme yesterday was perfect.

Oh, and one more thing. Al Harris should be called "White Out" or something. He completely wiped Miles Austin out of the Cowboy gameplan.

packsmack - while the d kept coming and didn't 'rest on their laurels,' romo actually DID start to carve up the d as the game wound down. on the edge of garbage time - but not quite there. i was a bit worried for a minute or two of the 4th quarter.

but then the D looked more like they did earlier in the season - bending to allow a drive, and then forcing a big turnover.

also, kampman is the starter. if only we had a sense before the season started of how badly we needed o-lineman, we could have made a trade. it sure is going to be tough to have to piss him off further at the end of the season by franchising him and trading him to anywhere BUT the queens. after the career-killing scheme change and his inability to fit in, i'd bet he's pretty unhappy. too bad, as he's a great packer.

I saw a rookie, Clay Mathews, flying around and in on or nearly every play. That energy, in my opinion, rubbed off on Hawk and Barnett. Jones did a very good job as a rookie also. The LB play was the best seen this year.
_____
Dline was almost as impressive Jenkins and Jolly (if he'll stop the damn trash talk) played very, very well. Raji is finally beginning to recover from the ankle adn Pickett is steady as usual.
_____
Woodson is from another planet - Harris good bye Miles (sorry fantasy guys) Collins and Bigby played well enough.
_____
Overall, a performance we've been hoping for. Thanks Dom.

MM has named Kampman the starter. The Line Backer play was the best its been all year, all 4 of them. Now they are going to switch it up, insert Kampman and even bring in Cillar with a club for Hawk in passing situations. Don't mess with something thats not broken. I just got chills during MM press conference today, a sense of over confidence. Damn I want a new coach with a brain.

The defense was inspiring yesterday. I hope you're right about Capers, Aaron. I'll never be comfortable being a defensive team, but I sure could get used to not losing to respectable teams. That game showed some pride and dignity. I've missed both.

C'mon, man! There's nothing more beautiful than a defensive, power running, though as nails team playing in the snow of Lambeau Field. Doing the power sweep! That's poetry right there.

Can someone figure out the blitz percentage when having the lead vs trailing? Nobody is going to blitz Favre with Adrian Peterson behind him, thats just stupid...and nearly two full games of trying to come from behind.

I agree with Dilligoff. We can do alot more in this D without Kampman in there.
Woody is as great as Reggie White, btw.

it was an outstanding performance, but i'de like to see more games before I decide. We saw some pretty awesome performances last year too, but we couldn't pull it together in the long run. Hopefully this year's different.

Nerdman - One big win and you are ready to raise Woody to the level of the all time great Reggie White... I'm not ready to go there by a long shot...(how quickly we forget). 2-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, 13-time Pro Bowl and 12-time All-Pro selection, holds 2nd place all-time amongst career sack leaders with 198.5 -sigh-

He was a great guy, I had a chance to meet him here on the east coast right around the time he 'came out of retirement' for Carolina. He accomplished great things off the field as well as on the field.

Woodson has been playing at an excellent level since joining GB. The case can be made that he's the team's 2009 MVP. I'd even go as far as to claim he'll likely make the Packers HOF. As to comparisions with Reggie, hmmmm...let's wait a couple of more years to decide. He's certainly on the right path.

As great as Reggie was I doubt he ever had a game with 9 tackles, 1 sack, 2 FF & a game-clinching INT....... I would contend that Woodson is having an impact equivalent to any impact Reggie had as a Packer ....... The opponents set up their offensive game plan in regards to Woodson just as they did with Reggie.... Plus Reggie had a little more talent surrounding him in GB than Woodson presently has...... Makes a difference.

Exactly what we need. The pressure worked on one of the best olines in the league, and it showed in the final result. We have so much talent on defense that we do not use.
