Can Fangio Continue Success Against Rodgers and Packers Offense?
CBS Chicago's Dan Durkin provides an excellent overview of how the Bears' new defensive coordinator has been successful against Rodgers and company.
By PackerAaron
The Chicago Bears couldn't get much lower than they were last November after back-to-back embarrassments, the second coming at the hands of arch-rival Green Bay. While the team played out the string under the cloud of doubt that accompanies a coach who most feel is on his way out, Bears fans longed for a return to the days their favorite team fielded a dominating defense. Heck, simply a competent defense would do. Almost anything would be better than the monstrosity Marc Trestman presided over.
Hired by new Bears head coach John Fox, Fangio brings with him one very important point on his resume. Chiefly, his undefeated record against Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers while he was defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers.
Obviously, there are a lot of things at play in that undefeated mark, but Fangio's results against arguably the game's best quarterback are hard to ignore or easily dismiss.
CBS Chicago's Dan Durkin has a great overview of what made Fangio so successful against Rodgers and the Packers during his 49ers tenure.
Money quote:
When you sift through Rodgers’ game logs, one fact stands out. From 2012 through 2014, he went 0-4 against the San Francisco 49ers — and new Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was calling the shots for the 49ers in each of those games.
Obviously, it takes a complete team effort to beat the Packers. In three of the four games, the 49ers won the time of possession and turnover battles and had fewer penalties. But Fangio’s game-planning also played a big role in the four-game sweep.
I highly recommend reading Durkin's breakdown of Fangio's scheme and game plan against Rodgers while in San Francisco. It's quite well done.
Of course, the big test will come this fall when Fangio is tasked with duplicating his past success without the copious amounts of talent he had on hand with the 49ers. There's a reason the Bears were desperate enough to try and sign Ray McDonald (before that blew up in their face.)
The Bears had to go do some heavy shopping in free agency to just bring up the talent level on the defensive side of the ball to something resembling respectable, especially in comparison to what Fangio had to work with in San Francisco.
Still, that doesn't mean the Bears defense won't be much improved. I suspect it will. Both Fox and Fangio are excellent defensive coaches. No matter what the talent level is, they won't make the mistakes that Mel Tucker made repeatedly. (But that's a whole other post...)
That opening game can't get here soon enough...

From arguably the best LB unit in the NFL to the worst. Not to mention the rest of the Bears' pathetic D.
I'll take Rodgers this year.

Agreed.

Speaking of, something is seriously rotten in San Fran.

What you mean? Willis, Borland, and now Anthony Davis retiring? Iupati leaving? Harbaugh? Kaepernick?
Maybe I already know what you mean.
How quickly things can change!

Right?
What is going on there? I don't really remember anything like this happening before.

Aaron Rodgers is 0-4 when Capers tries to stop Harbaugh. That's all.

It's not that simple.

Yeah, it is. Aside from the ridiculously cold Wild Card game (which you can throw out because that had more to do with the cold), Rodgers was his normal self against the 9ers. Problem was, the defense gave up 36 a game in the other 3 games. He can't do it all.

But that hardly means Harbaugh>Capers.

Those losses were more on Capers than Rodgers by a LARGE margin.

While I would agree that the losses were moreso due to defensive shortcomings than offensive ones, I would disagree that Capers IS the defense. To blame him is to imply that he simply made bad calls or failed to adjust, whereas I would say it was deficient personnel and execution. I don't think Dom forgot to call "stuff the run", "blanket the receivers", and "sack the quarterback" often enough.

I agree with both of you. There were games where we couldn't stop the run-option and then there were games where we stopped the run-option, but got whooped over the air.

Another bad taste I hope they get rid of this year.

Take away two All-Pro LBs, an All-Pro DE and half of their DBs, now see what Rodgers can do,,,,

Lost a lot of credibility when he as well as Bears brain trust ( lol ) endorsed McDonald.

Fangio might never again have the pieces he had in San Fran that helped him look like an epic genius, just like Capers might never again have the pieces he had in 2010 when he looked like one too.

The Bears will improve but it's not hard to improve from pathetic which they were last season. They added a few FA this year on defense but not any that I'd consider "Game Changers".
One interesting point is the Packers signed Mike Solari, the O-Line coach of the 49ers under Harbaugh, that certainly can't hurt.

They could have Buddy Ryan, Jerry Glanville and Dick LaBeau coaching that D and it wouldn't matter. They manage to field 5 defensive backs that were unfamiliar with the concept of the forward pass. There were 9 players on that team unwilling to tackle.
They were pro-football players in name only.
Until every player on that defense is replaced, the Packers will rain TDs on them.

Bring. It. On.
Kaepernick has been kryptonite and the Bears defense ain't dominant like the Niners were versus every team...they're dormant.
The Bears still suck. Pack -5 opening day.
All day.

Dear Coach Fox,
Here is my resume:
Rodgers had zero wins against my defense.
When can I start?

I don't care who is coaching for the Bears, Lions or Vikings, Packers are the class of the North again
