Campen Appears Safe

Lost amongst the many firings on the defensive side of the ball and the speculation regarding the identity of the new defensive coordinator is the fact that McCarthy finally wrapped up his meetings with his offensive coaches yesterday. As the Journal Sentinel points out, no announcements were forthcoming from the Packers, giving the appearance at least that offensive line coach James Campen, who it had been rumored was next in line to get the ax, will return in 2009.

Now, McCarthy didn't fire Sanders immediatley after their meeting last week. He waited a few days and then phoned him on Sunday evening. (A move that I think is pretty cowardly and has definitley tainted my perception of McCarthy - the least he owed Sanders was to tell him face to face) So there's every possibility that McCarthy might still place a similar call to Campen in the days to come.

I thought Silverstein and McGinn jumped the gun on that one. We'll see.

On firing by telephone, I agree for the most part. Unless, of course, Sanders was out of town (it is quite possible). In that case, what are you supposed to do?

You wait until you can see him face to face. (I somehow doubt, with all that was/is going on, Sanders was away...)

I don't know. It's weird. He apparently told fired all of the assistants in person and told Sanders over the phone. Something is going on that we don't know about.

Hmmmm!! Campen's charges were certainly in the sights of Joe Philbin. He had a lot of negative comments about O-line play regarding Grant's YPC and pass protection. Maybe they decided it's the players?

DDD - Agreed. It is a bit strange that he called Sanders basically to say - don't come in tomorrow. And then axed everyone else in person. Hopefully, Sanders will joing Brandt over at National Football Post and give us the scoop someday... ;)

He may well have talked with Sanders about his potential firing in his season ending interview with him. At that time Sanders might well have told him just call me and let me know when you've made your decision. In everything MM has done, including end of preseason cut downs when players are released he has stressed the importance of the respect of doing those things face to face.

I doubt he would have changed that just for Sanders unless they had previously discussed this and it was a request or agreed upon method.

Not sure I believe the "over the phone" nonsense - YOU NEED TO confirm that accusation before you Star Magazine it here on a PackerBacker website - this ain't the local supermarket. Always provide links to articles for that stuff.

As far as keeping Campen? I am totally against it. JMHO, but I don't think he could tie the Clydesdales together and get them to run AS A TEAM, even if it came with [screw C plugs into Slot D] instructions from Office Depot. That's just me. If he was successful, then Daryn Colledge's BIG arms would be the talk of the town in spanking defenses week in & week out. Tell me I'm wrong!

We simply need a better OLC, that's the end of it. It hasn't been righteous and he's been around long enough to call for what was needed LOUD ENOUGH thru the Press if no one's listening inside Camp.

IPBprez - Why so hostile?

It was in McGinn's Monday morning article, which I assume most die-hard fans read anyway. Here's your precious link: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/37127204.html

And the relevant quote:

McCarthy notified defensive coordinator Bob Sanders by telephone Sunday after they talked at length last week. Then he met with the six members of the defensive staff on Monday morning and released four of them.

Hey Everyone - Jags was just fired by BC. Think he's talking with MM about a job today?

RLC, I read some speculation that he will end up in Seattle with Mora, but I would also think spending another year in GB would be an option.

(This assumes that he doesn't get the NYJ job).

Maybe they bring him in as some sort of 'running game coordinator' - remember, he was the one who had worked with Gibbs in Atlanta and really seemed to know the ZBS.

Just fire Campen and make Jags the OL Coach/Asst Head Coach or something like that.

You fire your secondary coaches (who had two Pro Bowlers this year), but keep Campen?

I think MM is protecting his offense. Make everyone else (defense, special teams, strength and conditioning) the fall guy.

"You wait until you can see him face to face."

Aren't you the one who said we should hurry up and sign someone before other teams do? If you're going to ride that horse, how would he hire anyone with Sanders still DC?

Pick one!

How is it cowardly in any way? Was he AFRAID Sanders might hit him in the face? The man just fired 12173 damn people, he's got things to do, this guy isn't in town, guess what, he gets the phone call firing.

But about Campen, I thought the line did decent enough(4k passer, 1k runner)with injuries and young and growing players. Penalties were the big thing.

I don't look at it as being hostile. Joe Philbin used to be an Assistant to Larry Beightol(2003). It's discussed in my 2003 Yearbook. Yet, Larry's success(es) do not seem to have trickled down to James Campen. I question why not? Did Joe not understand Beightol's method(s)?

And, hey... asking for a link to anyone's comments here isn't a drastic request by any measure. Sure you were in the right mode when you read it?

If Bob Sanders was out of State, at the time, how else can you handle that issue? Does anyone know where Bob was when the call was placed? The Article doesn't elaborate other than to say they had "talked at length" previously.

O-Line was below average in protection, not to mention those penalties you refer to. Rodgers was constantly running for his life out there and penetration was like lunch break at Left Guard, the most. It wasn't much better (5%..?) on the other side. Aren't the better RB's getting over 1500 yards a season, on average? Bootlegger is the real deal, we just need to make sure he's protected. It will only get better. No protection? No one to blame other than the Line.

Dale - I never said that and you know it. Link please? I said that other teams were phoning people and McCarthy was wasting time. Bit of a difference, don't you think?

And before the rumor festers into fact - no one knows where the hell Bob Sanders was when McCarthy phoned him. This "he must have been out of town" story is not the 100 percent truth, no matter how many times it gets repeated. We don't know and probably will never know.
