Broncos vs Packers: How It Breaks Down

Aaron looks at how things should play out when each team has the ball and gives his prediction for the game.

When The Packers Have The Ball:

Look for Mike McCarthy to use extensive use of his multiple tight end sets today. The Broncos are a complete mess over the middle, with aging veteran safety Brian Dawkins being the only one who can even remotely cover anyone. Unfortunately for the Broncos, there's simply no way the old man can keep up with Packers tight end Jermichael Finley.

The one chance the Broncos defense has when it comes to slowing down Aaron Rodgers and company is the fact that defensive end Elvis Dumervil is supposed to play opposite rookie linebacker Von Miller. They are a potent pair of pass rushers, with Miller matching up against Marshal Newhouse, who will be getting his first start today at right tackle in place of the injured Bryan Bulaga. McCarthy will most likely start the game not giving Newhouse much help, but its something to monitor as the game goes on.

If Miller is giving Newhouse issues the way Miami Dolphins' defensive end Cameron Wake was killing Bryan Bulaga last year, the Packers can't afford to ignore it. Wake pretty much took the Packers out of a lot of what they were trying to do on offense in a game where the Packers offense struggled and the Dolphins ended up winning. McCarthy should learn from that lesson and give Newhouse the help he needs if its apparent he is over matched.

If the Packers can contain the Broncos' two edge rushers, they should put up points in bunches.

When The Broncos Have The Ball:

John Fox has brought his draconian offensive mentality to the Mile High city without the horses to run the race. Willis McGahee gets the start at running back and will probably get the majority of the workload ahead of Knowshon Moreno, who is coming back from injury. Regardless, the Broncos have been unable to get much of a push up front through their first three games so far this year and now they'll be going up against the Packers league leading rush defense.

Look for Tramon Williams to match up with Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, which is Orton's first read on many of the Broncos' pass plays. While Lloyd will get his yardage, Williams can more than hold his own there without help.

Broncos' playcaller Mike McCoy will try to keep his team on schedule by getting yardage any way he can on first and second down, be that through the running game, bubble screens. misdirection, whatever. The one thing he can't have a bunch of is third and long. If Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers is allowed to unleash his pressure packages, this Denver team simply won't be able to take advantage the way some teams have.

Enough Already, Who Wins?:

Fox is a good football coach who is attempting to dig out of the wreckage left by former head coach Josh McDaniels. While the Broncos could be a good team in a few years, right now they are not even in the same league as the champs. While they may hang around for the first half, look for the Packers to make this a laugher before the 4th Quarter.

Packers: 38

Broncos: 17
