Brandon Chillar Reportedly Released

Even with an injured hamstring, the Packers reportedly plan to release the veteran inside linebacker.

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly informed linebacker Brandon Chillar that he will be released.

"Chillar, who severely pulled a hamstring during personal workouts, was told that he had been let go," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "There was no way he was going to pass his physical, but the Packers could have put him on the physically unable to perform list if they thought he could come back from the injury."

Combined with the news that the Packers intend to either trade or release Nick Barnett, the Packers would seem to be surprisingly thin at inside linebacker.

While the Packers have supposedly been in negotiations with veteran Matt Wilhelm, the other backup inside linebackers currently on the roster are rookies D.J. Smith, Elijah "Peanut" Joseph and first-year player Cardia Jackson.

Whether the Packers are comfortable with those players as their backups to starters A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop remains to be seen.

Nothing official regarding releases has come down from the Packers. It's possible the Packers could end up keeping Barnett or restructure his contract or release and re-sign him. Or none of the above could happen. It's all speculation at this point.

Additionally, the Packers might scour the free agent market for an inside linebacker. They're not going to break the bank on a backup, but it's possible they look for a bargain.

Silverstein also brings up the topic of how the league and the team is treating players who got injured in offseason workouts. Chillar reportedly suffered his injury in a personal workout, which could raise questions about the value of practicing without coaching, guidance and without team trainers present.

Where the Packers go from here in regards to the inside linebacker position will be a development worth watching.

This could actually open up more trade possibilities for Barnett. The Packers might find a team looking to trade-up at ILB, and get a player back in return.

Will "Peanut" Joseph be this season's version of Sam Shields ?

I sure hope so !

I kinda liked Chillar, but I couldn't believe how light he was... almost a LB/ Safety hybrid. If he couldn't hurdle a guy, he couldn't make the tackle.

Is perhaps Brad Jones moving to ILB?

All parties with an 'in' say no. Wilde is on air re-iterating the same sentiment now (per a coaching source).

Depends on what you mean by getting excited. Jameel McClain, Eric Barton, possibly Kevin Burnett.
