Blueprint to Improving the Packers Porous Run Defense

Eliminating the missed tackles and getting healthy are two ways the Packers can impove their 32nd-ranked rush defense.

After hemorrhaging early in the season, giving up 209 rushing yards to the Seattle Seahawks, 235 to the Chicago bears, 146 to the New York Jets, the Green Bay Packers ranked last in the NFL in run defense four games into the season.

Upon reaching the season's quarter pole, it appeared as if the run defense was starting to turn a corner. They weren't perfect, but in giving up 111, 112 and 108 in three consecutive weeks to the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers, at least seemed the Packers were headed in the right direction. They even temporarily climbed out of the basement in the league's basement in the run defense rankings.

Then came Sunday and the Packers reverted back to old form, allowing Mark Ingram and the New Orleans Saints to explode for 193 yards.

"Your Achilles heel was the run defense because I think it was they had 11 third downs and nine of them were third-and-4 or less," explained head coach Mike McCarthy. "You're playing uphill as a defense there, against an offense like that, because now they're in a run-pass mode all the way through. Their play-action passing game obviously has more of an impact on your front seven, and they were able to hit the big shots on our back end."

The problem with allowing so many rushing yards is that the Saints kept the Packers defense guessing.

Facing second-and-short or third-and-short situations, the Packers defense didn't know if the Saints would run or pass.

If they ran, the Saints didn't have far to go to get a first down and move the sticks. If they passed, they would set it up with a play-action fake and expose the deep half of the Packers defense.

In order for the Packers to improve their 32nd-ranked run defense, allowing an average of 153.yards per game, and become Super Bowl contenders, improvement is going to have to come from within.

Unfortunately for defensive coordinator Dom Capers, there's no magic elixir. There's no free agency or NFL Draft for another five or six months. "Fixing" the run the run defense is probably unrealistic, but improvement is possible.

To their credit, the Packers already have solid pass defense, thanks in large part to winning the turnover battle and limiting damage by opposing quarterbacks in spite of what Drew Brees was able to do this past Sunday.

"We need to be more than a football team that has to rely on winning the turnover ratio," said McCarthy. "This game is about making big plays and taking care of the football and taking it away. Those are two of the most critical components of it. But to get to where we want to go, we have to overcome when we don't play just right straight to our identity or to our format."

The template for improving the run defense is three-pronged:

1. Eliminate the Missed Tackles

Missed tackles are a sore spot across the entire defense but especially in the Green Bay secondary.

According to ProFootballFocus.com (subscription content), players with five or more missed tackles this season include Tramon Williams (seven), Davon House (six), Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (six), Micah Hyde (five) and Casey Hayward (five).

Williams, House and Clinton-Dix, in particular, combined for eight of the team's 13 missed tackles against the Saints.

"Our issues on run defense are fundamental," said McCarthy. "We need to do a better job of staying square, getting in our gaps, and we need to tackle the damn ball carrier and put him on the ground, so that's what we'll be focused on."

The good news with a player like Clinton-Dix, his mistakes are a result of aggression, running with abandon and attempting to tackle with his head down and not seeing his target. There's hope that more experience and more coaching will allow the Packers first round draft pick to fulfill his potential.

As for the others, improvement—like McCarthy said—is going to have to come from fundamentals, including Julius Peppers, who's tied for the team lead with seven missed tackles.

2. Figure Out the Inside Linebacker Spot

The Packers have made several changes at the inside linebacker position.

First, it appears they've moved on from Brad Jones, who hasn't played a down on defense in each of the two weeks following a poor performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6.

Since removing Jones, there's been a timeshare opposite A.J. Hawk with Jamari Lattimore and Sam Barrington splitting snaps.

The Packers also made a significant move this past Sunday when Lattimore became the team's lone inside linebacker in dime packages in place of Hawk for the first time this season.

A change in the dime defense has more to do with the pass defense than the run, but cutting back Hawk's snaps is only going to help keep him fresh for the snaps he does play.

Is this the way the Packers are going to divvy up snaps the rest of the way? That's something they'll need to iron out.

3. Get Healthy

The easiest of the three fixes is one that should come naturally.

For the Packers, the bye week couldn't come at a better time, beneficiaries of the scheduling gods.

Not only will players on the offensive side of the football such as Aaron Rodgers and T.J. Lang reap the rewards from a week off, so will two starters in the Packers secondary.

"I had a chance to visit with (Morgan Burnett) and Sam (Shields). They're definitely getting better," said McCarthy. "I know their workouts before the game against the Saints, I know our training staff felt that they were improving."

The speed of Burnett and Shields have been sorely missed.

Shields isn't going to intimidate anyone with his size, but his speed allows him to be in the right position at the right time. His two missed tackles in 409 snaps are more impressive than House's six in 297 snaps.

The same goes for Burnett, who's relatively faster than Hyde and more reliable at this point in their careers.

A healthy Datone Jones will also be an improvement over the injured version.

They certainly miss Raji, never thought I'd say that and mean it. They really miss the big bodied run stuffers like Pickett and Jolly, although our pass rush has improved with Daniels, Jones, Guion, etc. I don't think you can have it both ways with this current roster, it just won't happen. I would however, play Barrington with Lattimore and only sub in Hawk. See what those guys can do together. Hawk is about done.

The secret to improving the Pack's run D is to tackle better? Seriously?

Please read below, which is being typed in BIG LETTERS (you know the sort of big letters that McCarthy told the press back back in May that they could use when he GUARANTEED the D would be better this year).

The Pack has NO NT OTHER THAN AN UNDRAFTED ROOKIE and HAS TERRIBLE INSIDE LINEBACKERS (not inexpensive mind you, because Jones and Hawk are not poorly paid by any means, just bad).

We can bash on Dom all we want, but there is (once again) a huge talent deficit at NT/ILB. The players can work on fundamentals all they want (and BTW have not Jones & Hawk been on the team for 15+ years combined?) but when you can't play you can't play.

I don't think anyone really disagrees that there is substandard talent in the middle of the front 7. Many of us were talking about it all offseason. Unfortunately, it did not get addressed sufficiently.

Nothing can be done about the talent deficit at ILB & NT now. Well, that's not entirely true, IMO. I think their best ILB is Clay Matthews. But he's used mostly outside in pass rush.

But they can put a band aid on by being better fundamentally in making tackles.

Sadly, I think there is one very, very important person who works at 1265 Lombardi Ave who disagrees with you and I that there is substandard talent in the middle, at least at middle linebacker.

At the very least, that important person disagreed that Brad Jones and AJ Hawk were substandard when he re-signed them to big money second contracts and because that person is in charge of personnel only his views matter.

That's TT's history. He gets blind spots that can take years to address. OLB, Safety, o-line and RB are all positions that were big weaknesses for a few years. Usually TT does eventually get it right but he sure can stretch the patience while we wait.

This would be where a good lesson in defensive play-calling would help. Isnt Dom calling his defense based on "down and distance", and what he has seen the Saints do so far this season? Like, its really a guessing game when its 2nd or 3rd and short, and Payton can call either run or pass.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesnt it work like this: Dom sends the play in, and the defense lines up, then the offense hits the line, and makes any adjustments based on what the QB sees. Maybe Dom needs some sort of alignment where he can better disguise what he wants the defense to do, and maybe make better adjustments on the line?

I still don't quite understand why they are playing Barrington over Lattimore. I thought Lattimore was doing really well at ILB when playing until he got hurt. Are they just using Lattimore on a snap count?

I really think missing Burnett really hurt the Run defense. Burnett has been playing his best football. He hasn't been perfect but he has been very good.

Also against the Saints, House was horrible. How many missed tackles did he end up with? He wasn't physical like he normally has been.

I think the biggest thing will be getting guys back healthy. Datone Jones will add more depth and keep guys on the DL fresh with a healthy rotation. Lattimore getting healthier I think will help and getting Burnett back will really help.

Another question i have though is how Capers called his defense against the Saints. Missing Burnett and Shields did he call the defense differently then he has the previous weeks? Did he change his game plan based on who was available?

I disagree with you on Lattimore. If I am seeing especially how he played against the Saints, he consistently chose the wrong gap, and he is a huge liability trying to cover TEs. While he is a thumper, I don't think he has good football instincts. I do still have that hope for Barrington. Just don't think anything of Lattimore at all. And you may laugh, but I don't even think he is better than Jones. Jones have played horribly this year, but I think he can be better, and he had moments last year and the year before when he clearly displayed more potential than Lattimore. Just wished he'd play better this year, but I guess they won't play him unless they have to.
But at the same time, it is very telling that Bradford cannot even get on the field or be active on gamedays. He can't be anything at all, at least not this year.

Maybe forget about him THIS SEASON, but to write him off permanently would be the type of pessimistic view that I take issue with.

Hell, maybe, IN TIME, it does become apparent that he won't pan out. But there is nothing on either side of his ledger right now. Not every productive player is drafted early (Richard Sherman) or drafted at all (Sam Shields). We should all know that by now.

Nothing like jumping the gun.

I remember how awesome Darren Sharper and Nick Collins were as rookies...oh, wait.

All I'm saying is give this kid a chance before pronouncing him suck-ulent.

Bradford has to learn ILB. The coaches insisted on trying him at OLB for most of the preseason. At 6'1" and 250 pounds who runs a 4.76 forty with a 37" vertical, he looked liked he had pretty good hips and might be a prospect at ILB. Short arms are a problem. I never thought he could play OLB.

McCarthy says they need to "tackle the damn ball carrier". If players are still deficient in one of the most important fundamental skills of football, why aren't they benched or sent packing? Micah Hyde or should I call him Mike's Hype has been pretty much of a stiff this year and slow like Hawk Besides just throwing himself at the ball carrier's feet, I haven't seen him do much. A lot of the defense looked like they were saving themselves for their mini vacation. Using the fundamental skills they should have learned in high school would go a long way in fixing this defense.

well we are surely glad that you have all answers to our problems. Had TT drafted Ryan Shazier as you've suggested, and had he given away most of his draft picks for that as you've also suggested, then we'd look at something similar to his current production for the Steelers: 24 tackles, no game changing plays such as sacks or INTs... Great player. Just not in the NFL. Even Lattimore has 36 tackles...

oh you want facts? Yes, I give you facts. 4 games played, all 4 as starter. He finished all 4. 24 tackles, one of those 24 for a loss. 1 pass defended. That's it. Has "impact player" written all over him. He is undersized for the position with 237 lbs, plain and simple. And just because he was hurt and couldn't play in the other games doesn't mean he couldn't play well in the 4 games he started and played. Glad we didn't get that guy...
And please don't start with the name-calling. If you cannot even make an argument without calling other posters "clown" or anything else, then go back to where you belong - the Vikings board. Or better, since you already made up your mind, why don't you go to the Bears board and tell those people how good their team is and that they'll surely win the next game in Lambeau. Why do you waste your time with us ignorants, since you know so much about NFL impact players and we clearly don't? Remind us again, how many yards running did you expect the Vikings and the Panthers to hang on the Packers D?

Shazier hasn't done swat. Barr the 9th pick in the draft by the Vikes stripped the ball loose and ran for a game winning touchdown. Wow add him to Capt Munderline, and all the other linebackers and you see a team that can stop the run.
So deal with the facts: good teams run at will on the Packers due to a piss poor non exiatant linebacking core.

Looks like your boy AP is working on a deal to avoid prison time, so maybe he'll be back to join "Capt Munderline" and the other exiatant LBs (the ones that can do swat) and they can make a push for .500. Congrats on that.

Ya. Dam good thing they were making those yards on the ground. It wasn't until the second half that they realized, we can pass at will and score at will, why did we screw with the run when the other was so so much easier.

That's been a pretty big need for a long time, IMO. In hindsight, I'm glad they got Clinton-Dix but I wanted an ILB much more than a safety in round 1 of the draft at the time. Either that or adding a vet that could have been an upgrade--which is not a high bar to clear.

Both draft and FA were weak ILB groups this past offseason from what I read. Hopefully next offseason will offer more options.

He was not cheap, but Karlos Dansby was a free agent last summer and he is killing it in Cleveland. Currently the number 2 rated inside linebacker by PFF. (CJ Mosely who many wanted but who was gone by the time the Pack selected in round 1, is rated #1).

He would never have been signed as he is just not "Packer people," but Rolando McClain has helped transform what had been a woeful Cowboy D.

Wesley Woodyard and Brandon Spikes were OK inside linebackers who were also available last offseason but with all the money devoted to Hawk and Jones it was not like TT was likely to spend money on that position anyway.

I think we should pick up Danny Shelton in the first this draft. He's a monster against the run, and can take up multiple blockers. I saw him against ASU and he straight up looked like Wilfork in the middle. ASU could do nothing up the middle because of him.

If they have moved on from Brad Jones. (And thank god they did). Why is Jones still on the roster?

Promote the best PS guy, cycle another body in to practice and jettison the dead weight. The worst thing that happens is the same as now..they get no contribution from the roster spot. The best case scenario is they unearth another Tramon Williams or Cullen Jenkins. Or even a guy like Tom Crabtree or Atari Bigby--guys that can make a limited contribution for a short time. Which beats no contribution.

I think teams also look at where Perry is. Left side, run left. Right side run right. Perry is so slow and unable to seal the edge, the runners have 8 yards before the dbacks can come up and attempt a tackle.
Time DIx learned to tackle. Waaaaay too many one on one misses for a number one top draft pick.

2) Personnel (formations)

That's it.

The fact that this team looks good and then back to bad in run defense leads me to #1 and #2.

I thought one of the major reasons on moving Hyde to safety was to be able to run more Base. I seen a lot of Nickel against the Saints when they only had 1 WR on the field.

I saw a lot of bad football by teams that looked good the week before. The league is turning into arena football. 50+ points 1,000 yards of offense. If I was considering football at a young age I sure wouldn't want to play defense. Also I wouldn't want to be skip cowless, that would really suck.

You're right. Consistent defense is hard to find. The damn Lions seem to have gotten it together. The last two weeks were an opportune time for their implosion to begin and it didn't. Detroit has become the team to beat in the North. (And winning without Megatron). I'm worried.

First off we have proof that a defense can improve w/o adding a bunch of people...The Dallas Cowboys.

Second, the Colts won the SB when their run defense was horrible until their SS, Bob Saunders, came back and stopped the run.

Third, Green Bay was enough good players to field a very good defense. They aren't consistent w/ their fundamentals..dropping their heads when tackling, not wrapping up, not driving through the guy when you make contact. These are fixable. Players don't like to be embarrassed by their performance. If they aren't then TT needs to get rid of them. Will they ever be a top five...I doubt it because they don't have that middle thumper. They will get better when Rodgers gives them enough of a lead to make the other teams one dimensional. Until then, they can improve enough to win games.

How many 3rd and Medium to Longs did the Saints convert via the run? Aggregate yards mean nothing. The inability to get off the field on 3rd down and the explosive plays in the passing game by the Saints played a larger role when looking at this from a statistical perspective. Schematically the defense was outcoached. One of two possible things occurred in the defensive pass structure on the back end. Either Capers misjudged Hyde's ability as a deep safety or Payton schemed the defense in to rolling Ha-Ha in to the box. Ha-Ha should have spent most of the night in the deep middle....the place where he' s the most effective. Hyde is not a deep middle or half field cover safety. Payton attacked the ILBs with rubs and spacing on intermediate and short route concepts. I wouldn't be worried about the run defense. I'd be more concerned with teams exploiting the lack of athleticism and instincts via the pass.

Fatal - as in "We're not winning the SB this year." That's also assuming that no one steps up. I don't think it'll happen - but it could.

On the other hand, you never have anything good to say about a team that has won 2 Lombardi's and 15 Division Championships and more games than any other franchise in the NFL in the past 30 years.

I'm a realist. You are such a pessimist that I'm starting to think you've got serious issues.
