Bits and Boredom: McCarthy and Rodgers Speak, House's Wild Ride

With the third and final session of OTAs occurring this week, the activity and excitement surrounding Lambeau continues to grow. Here are some talking points I’m particularly interested in:

McCarthy, Rodgers provide interesting sound bites.

During his Tuesday press conference, the head coach provided some insight into how he thinks the progression is coming along, particularly among the two younger quarterbacks on the roster.

“I think the young quarterbacks have struggled,” McCarthy said when asked about how second-year man Joe Callahan and undrafted rookie Taysom Hill have fared in OTAs. He went on to say that while it’s normal for the defense to be ahead of the offense this time of year, he wasn’t exactly over the moon with the quality of work the offense as a whole has put in the past couple days.

McCarthy also noted the new guys are “playing uphill,” as the team would still be in the midst of installation practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. Next week’s “review practices,” McCarthy said, are typically when the tables begin to turn and the offense starts to catch up to the defense.

While it’s not particularly surprising to hear that Hill has struggled, I did find it interesting that Callahan, who last year was praised for the way he led the offense during the preseason in Brett Hundley’s absence, hasn’t performed to those standards. It’s understandable that a second-year quarterback would still have some wrinkles to iron out, though it seemed he had a good grip on the system early last season.

Meanwhile, the starting quarterback was also available to the media Tuesday. Probably the most noteworthy quote from Rodgers came when he was asked whether or not he has discussed the quarterback pay scale around the league with team officials.

“That stuff usually takes care of itself,” Rodgers began, “and I also have a fantastic agent…he takes care of that stuff.”

The 13-year veteran continued, “I know my value in this league, and I know that the team appreciates me. I’m going to try and continue to make myself an indispensable part of this roster. When you do that, when your time comes up to get a contract, you usually get a contract extension.”

When asked whether he’s concerned he’ll ever have to take a pay cut to help the team stay competitive, a la Tom Brady, Rodgers tried to keep things light.

“I think you forget that Tom has Giselle, for one,” he quipped. “And two, we’re about $20 million under the cap, as usual. So we have plenty of room. We signed the last deal knowing it was a good deal for both sides.”

The quarterback did just about as a good a job as anyone could do with a line of questioning that can’t be all that comfortable to talk about. Granted, Rodgers is entering his 13th season and has obviously become accustomed to standing up for his value based on his on-field performance. But his comments were still refreshing in the sense that he clearly doesn’t feel he’s being undervalued by the team. A lot could happen between now and whenever he gets a new deal, but for now it seems there won’t be much drama when that time comes.

Davon House takes a wild ride.

In what has to be one of the coolest displays of kindness and fan loyalty you’ll ever see, Davon House was able to make it to OTAs this week with the help of a couple devoted Packer fans. After missing a connecting flight from Minneapolis to Green Bay Monday night, House found himself in a precarious situation. The car rental spots were all closed, and he needed to be in Green Bay for practice Tuesday morning.

When House took to Twitter to explain his situation, Mike and Chad Johnson, brothers and Packer fans, quickly offered to help him out. Mike, who lives just across the river from the Twin Cities in Hudson, Wisconsin, scooped up the Packers’ cornerback at the airport. On the way to Green Bay, they stopped to pick up Chad, who joined so that the two brothers could keep each other awake on their return trip.

According to House, he stayed awake as long as he could, talking with the pair and getting to know them. House zonked out after about an hour and a half, but treated the brothers to a Lambeau Field locker room visit at 3:30 in the morning, as well as some signed memorabilia.

I love this story for two reasons. First, the commitment from House to get back to Green Bay for OTAs is extremely commendable. Though Aaron Rodgers made a comment (with a grin) on House possibly worrying about his workout bonus, for a veteran player to go to such lengths to get back to town is extremely impressive. Second, the selflessness and loyalty of the two brothers is just outstanding. Sure, there are probably plenty of people who would jump at the chance to take a four hour car ride with an NFL player, but these guys took it to the next level, and for that I say well done.

Maybe new GM (after Thompson retires) will want a younger QB like Hundley, and the train will leave the station without Rodgers. :-}

I get the feeling before the regular season starts, GB will extend and raise ARodgers contract to where he is once again the highest paid player in the league ( he already was for a couple of years under his current contract).

There will be exaltation's from quite a few pundits and posters about how lucky GB is to have him and how he deserves this.

Yes, we have been fortunate to have a player of this high caliber at one of sports most important positions. Perhaps he does deserve to be the leagues highest paid player. But for every dollar we pay Arod, there's one less to go for possibly acquiring quality FA's either this year, next year or sometime during Rodgers window.

Sure we have $20mil in cap space now, but most of that, I believe, will go to resigning most of next years batch of GB FA's. Hope when Arod gets his raise he doesn't lament how it sucks to lose players like Lang this year. You can't have it both ways.

Mega deals are good for those who get them, but quickly restrict a teams ability to acquire or maintain additional talent. If Arod is serious about winning another SB, one of the best things he could do is play through his current $22mil/year - $110mil total contract (still a hell of a lot) and allow Ted to keep more of his own or actually go off script and acquire some talent while Arod can still move around.

As a fan I could give a crap about the reverence Arod would get from being the leagues highest paid player. A lot of it I believe, is just an ego-stroke.

The equation is simple - the more spent on Arod the less talent the team can retain or acquire, which gives them less a chance to win the SB.

You got my upvote, but I am reserved with some of your thinking. I doubt, for example, that Aaron pushes GB for extention. I think he is relaxed and he is convinced that Packers will offer him fair deal.

I think many of us are hoping that ARod goes the "Tom Brady" route and not the "I'm gettin' mine" route. From my perspective, that would show a lot of class on his part, especially since he stands to continue to make a lot of $$ when his playing days are done as a broadcaster, endorsement guy, on speaking engagements, etc. Many players have a hard time making any money on their NFL notoriety when their playing days are done...I don't think that will be a problem for #12.

We season ticket holders, better get ready to dig into our wallets for a 9th year in a row. However, the price I pay for tickets is a minor expense since I live in CA. It's the two airline tickets; motel; and car rentals; etc that lighten my pockets. I fully expect players salaries to rise and fans like me and you are going to help fund it.

I like to view the games from Lambeau Field and Rodgers is the best in the business behind center.

Time to make him the highest paid QB in the NFL once again.

If Rodgers wins another SB and the league MVP this season his value will go through the roof even farther than it has already. In that case, the Packers will need to decide how much is a 35 year old QB worth and how much time does he have left. Simultaneously there will be NFL owners out there who will sign AR just to make the headlines. I could see the L.A. Rams owner making a push for AR just to fill his new stadium. The question is does Rodgers want to remain in GB or does he want the mega-mega bucks? Thanks, Since '61

I'd be shocked if he really wants to chase the "mega-mega bucks"!

TK - I would be as well, but he would not be the first to do so and stranger things have happened. Also, remember when an agent is involved anything is possible. Thanks, Since '61

I think#12 is the last guy to need money. He's going to acting school & Hollywood or will probably become one of the best analysts ever. He's concerned about his legacy. Money is the least of his worries...or certainly should be!
