Bits and Boredom: Another Big Name Acquisition & Packer Fans Are One of a Kind

With the offseason program complete and training camp still about a month away, we’ve entered into the final football abyss of 2017. While nothing is happening on the field at the moment, indulge me in commenting on a couple Packers-related storylines that caught my eye this week:

Another big name headed to Titletown.

Green Bay’s latest big name free agent acquisition is creating a lot of buzz—in medical circles, that is. Dr. Robert Anderson, renowned foot and ankle specialist, will be making his way to Green Bay to join the Packers’ medical staff under the team’s head physician, Dr. Pat McKenzie. Anderson will also partner at the Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, a medical facility located in the Titletown District across from Lambeau Field.

Anderson, who previously operated a practice in Charlotte, North Carolina in addition to working with the Carolina Panthers, has performed procedures on three Packers in the last three years: Corey Linsley most recently, the now-departed Eddie Lacy in 2016 and Ty Montgomery in 2015. Other stars Anderson has treated include Cam Newton, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and Derek Jeter.

While it may not mean much immediately, it certainly can’t hurt the Packers to now have another outstanding physician so close to home. From a business and community standpoint, the team should also benefit from bringing in a revered name in sports medicine to anchor the medical facility in their new entertainment district.

Packer fans are something else.

A couple weeks after two brothers helped shuttle Davon House to OTAs, a couple more Packer fans are in the news this week, surprisingly with both having a Chicago connection.

We begin in the courts, where Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin native Russell Beckman is suing the Chicago Bears. Beckman, who lives about an hour north of Chicago and holds Bears season tickets, claims the Bears violated his right to free speech by barring him from wearing Packers gear to watch a pregame warmup from the sidelines before a December game at Soldier Field last season.

It seems likely the issue will come down to a matter of fine print and all that, but I think you’ve really got to admire Beckman’s determination here. Packer fans derive much pleasure from beating the Bears on the field, but one man wants to take things a step further and hand them a loss in the U.S. court system, too. Well done, Russell.

Meanwhile, another fan of the Green and Gold can now show his support whenever he signs his name. Ryan Holtan-Murphy, a Wauwatosa, Wisconsin native, recently tied the knot with his new wife, Marie. On the surface, this isn’t groundbreaking news. Until you get to why Holtan-Murphy is currently in the process of legally taking his wife’s last name, which happens to be Packer.

Are there more important things to consider when contemplating marriage? Sure. But I think we can all agree it would be pretty cool to be able to justify tying every decoration in the house to the Packers on the basis of sharing a name with the team.

"I think you’ve really got to admire Beckman’s determination here."

Um, no, I don't have to admire it at all. He's being a big, stupid idiot. Furthermore, if the court wants to go the extra mile and fine Beckman for bringing a frivolous lawsuit, I'd applaud it.

This is a more worthless use of court time than Brady's deflated football lawsuit.
