Bigby Signs His Tender

In the least-shocking development of the off-season, Atari Bigby has signed his one year restricted free agent tender.

Bigby could play a big role in the Packers resurgence next year if he can come back healthy in 2009. The Packers never recovered from the dismal drop-off in play at the strong safety position last year. For all that went wrong up front, and a whole lot did, it was all compounded by the less-than-stellar play in the backend (and yes, I include Nick Collins in that sentiment.) Here's hoping Bigby has a real return to form.

The guy's a major liability. People keep referring to his "old form." He had a decent second half of 2007, and all of a sudden he can play a big role? Bigby and Collins are "Dumb and Dumber" back there. If you're looking for a smash-mouth, run-support safety, I'd take a good look at Louis Delmas.

Thanks DDD - yeah, that's all I use at work and I haven't had any problems on it...

JoeBuck - I guess I buy into the ascent I see when I watch the end of the 2007 regular season, not to mention the playoff games. He was really starting to 'get it'. However, as you will see if you do a search of 'Nick Collins' on CHTV - I completely agree with your Dumb and Dumber comment. ;)

Yet another Packer FA who garnered no interest from the other 31 teams. To be fair with Bigby the Packers did attach a draft pick assignment to him. A 2nd, maybe a third? Cassel was traded for a 2nd.

He, too, has a lot to prove before he can be rated higher than a development project. 8 games does not a career make. He did show potential in the 13-3 year. He showed nothing before his injury in the 6-10 year.

And now Kuhn, Hunter and Martin are signing the temders. So what do the Packers have? Pretty much the same team they had last season. As fans, we better hope the acquisition of Capers does make all the difference. The talent level is exactly the same. Preston an Smith are both development projects, at best. And to be realistic, the draft is not likely to provide any short-term gains.

So, MM is on his own going into this year. If significant improvement in the W/L column does not occur, he is in big trouble.

Don't get too bent out of shape about these guys signing their tenders. If they don't make the final roster, they don't collect. Martin would be the best bet to return. As a big target with some excellent blocking skills, I'd have no problem with that at the $1 million tender he'll sign.

As far as Collins and Bigby are concerned, I can't believe we'd be counting on this particular pairing to transition to the new scheme. Bigby is an overrated "talent" who is a year removed from starting form. And then you have Collins who has been a no-show in the off-season program, and according to Barnett, there are definitely some intricacies involved in the offensive formations recognition, adjustments, and terminology with the new scheme. Yikes! This pairing definitely does NOT inspire confidence, from where I'm sitting.

If the Packers are going to get rid of everyone who did not play as well in 2008 as they did in 2007, we're going to have a roster of 1. I agree that Bigby was not as good last year as he was the year before. Pretty much no one on the defense was (although Cullen Jenkins might have had he been available all season). Such an approach means getting rid of not only Bigby and Collins, but also our entire LB corps- and Aaron Kampman. Because despite the fluffing that he gets in the media (and most blogs), Aaron Kampman pretty much sucked last year too. Certainly he was a shadow of what he was in 07. So if we're going to be intellectually honest about it, we really need to replace every single player on the defensive side of the ball.

In fact, there's only one player on the offensive side of the ball who played better last year than the year before. And that's because he hardly played at all in 07 (and when he did, he showed nothing). Of course, that's the same guy who's created so much Sturm und Drang amongst Packer faithful.

Go figure.

Joe, only question I have is this, who will replace them if they get cut? The new draft choices, the old draft choices or other teams cast-offs?

I'll be sending in an analysis of TT's draft success later.

Ron, it'll likely be new draft choices in most cases. Ted will likely take a late flyer on a WR prospect who will compete for Martin's 5th spot. Same goes for the FB position. McCarthy loves FBs, and I'm betting Ted either selects or signs one as FA. Hunter is in a crowded OLB group, which will probably have a first or early-second day draft pick thrown in there as well. Hunter is a pretty good ST player, so that gives him an edge over some others, but you never know. I'm not advocating any particular stance, I'm just trying to keep it real based on how Ted rolls. And he rolls with the draft.

FYI - in 2007 and 2008 TT kept 17 of his draft choices on the roster. Excluding Crosby, none are starters. There are some potential starters (Nelson, Jones, Finley and Jackson) but no starters yet. So, it is unlikely this year's crop will be much different. Expect 3 to 4 years of development and then only a much smaller percentage of the total picks will suceed. In 2005, TT drafted 11 players. Only 4 remain active, Rodgers, Collins, Poppinga, and Montgomery. Rodgers and Collins have been rated highly even though Collins is not considered that highly by many on this blog. Popinga and Montgomery are the other two and just what can be said about them? Below average NFL players. The draft under TT is not a panacea.

I sent you my state of the state pre draft packer analysis to your info @ web address. Let me know that you got it. I included a decent chunk about this subject. Preview: Atari Bigby is the NFC north's Troy Palamalu next year. The Collins haters puzzle me too....My take is that with Rouse also not clearly getting the defense last year that says more about the coaches than the players.....we got new coaches, time will tell. It will be nice to have a true free safety and true strong safety moving forward.

My goodness but Shottenheimer and sanders were a pair, no?

Right. You're not going to get an argument from me that building a roster almost exclusively through the draft is the right approach. The draft is an important tool, but Ted leans on it much too heavily. This forces him to have great drafts, which he hasn't had, and it also leads him to overvalue the "talent" on the current roster. Yet, here we are...

The 2006 draft has been called TT's best by many sports writers and analysts. He made 12 selections that year. There are seven remaining on the roster.

Round 1 - AJ Hawk a very average LB so far.

Round 2 - Daryn College a G/T that has a lot to prove before he's considered a successful pick. Greg Jennings a very good WR who could be an All-Pro

Round 3 - Abdul Hodge Cut. Jason Spitiz G who has much to prove.

Round 4 - Korey Rodgers Cut. Will Blackmon a good punt returner and average Kickoff returner. DB only in an emergency.

Round 5 - Ingle Martin Who can forget him? Everyone! Tony Moll a giant bust.

Round 6 - Johnny Jolly So far an average DT but has potential to get better. Tyrone Culver Gone!

Round 7 - Dave Tollefson - Gone!

In effect you've got one star, two average players and four below average with one of those bordering on a bust.

Not as good as some might say? You bet!
