Packers 1st Round Big Board

This is a Big Board I’ve tailored to the Green Bay Packer’s needs and ranked the prospects into 4 categories. This doesn’t necessarily correlate with my Top 100 board but this will give you a better idea of the direction I’m hoping the Packers go in the 1st round.

Players I’d trade up for (In order):

1.       DeForest Buckner, DL, Oregon

2.       Myles Jack, LB, UCLA

3.       Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss

Players I’d be happy with at pick 27 (In order):

1.       Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor

2.       Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville

3.       Shaq Lawson, Edge, Clemson

4.       Darron Lee, LB, Ohio St.

5.       Leonard Floyd, Edge/LB, Georgia

6.       Chris Jones, DT, Mississippi St.

7.       Vernon Butler, DT, Louisiana Tech

8.       Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama

9.       Noah Spence, Edge, Eastern Kentucky

10.    Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama

11.    Kenny Clark, DT, UCLA

12.   Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame

Players I would need to be talked into at pick 27 (In Order):

(*Players I could probably live with depending how the rest of the draft played out*)

1.       Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

2.       Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio St.

3.       A’Shawn Robinson, DL, Alabama

4.       Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana

5.       Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan St.

6.       Robert Nkemdiche, DL, Ole Miss

7.       Kamalei Correa, Edge/LB, Boise St.

Players I’d be content with in a trade back scenario (In Order):

1.       Jonathan Bullard, DL, Florida

2.       Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame

3.       Emmanuel Ogbah, Edge, Oklahoma St.

4.       Kyler Fackrell, Edge/LB, Utah St.

5.       Kevin Dodd, Edge/DL, Clemson

6.       LaQuon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss

7.       Su’a Cravens, LB/S, USC

8.       Cody Whiteair, OL, Kansas St.

9.       Hunter Henry, TE, Arkansas

10.       Nick Martin, OG/C, Notre Dame

I'm hoping for a tradeback, but only 4-8 spots. Maybe net an extra 4th and still get one of these quality DL.

Seeing more and more mocks projecting Jalyon Smith to GB in Round 3.

If Sheldon Rankins or Shaq Lawson make it to 27 I'll run interference for TT to turn the pick in.

I appreciate your efforts, Cody. Not surprising that I don't agree with your lists, sometimes very strongly.

TRADE UP: The most I'd be willing to use to trade up is our 3rd round pick, and then very reluctantly. Per the trade chart, our third might move us up from #27 to #20. Our 2nd moves us up to 15/16th. Our 2nd and 3rd moves us up to 13 or so. Anything is possible, I suppose, but only Jack might drop into the teens. Note I watched one game of Myles Jack (he looked real good of course) and paid little attention to his medical situation, so I have no strong opinion on Jack.

Happy @ #27 guys: I'd remove Lee, Floyd, Jones and Clark from your list altogether.

Live with guys: I'd remove Correa, add Lee & Clark, but Floyd and Jones are still off the list.

Trade Back: If you're talking about moving back no more than to #40, I'd keep Dodd, Whitehair, henry, and Martin and remove the rest. I'd add Lee and Floyd, but Correa and Cravens are not worth #40 or better. for some reason I never watched Bullard, so no opinion.

Should include Rankins in the trade up section. If either Conklin or Decker is available (not likely) the Pack will be selecting OT in Rd1. I also feel like Ogbah may be a bit underrated; look at his pressures from last year - he led the nation and it wasn't that close.

the closer and closer we get to the draft, the more I hope he is taken before Green Bay picks. He could be good, but I think they can probably get as good of a player in the 2nd-3rd round.

A guy like Josh Perry, or Deion Jones or Jatavis Brown.

If he was there, I'd still say there's a better chance we don't take Ragland than we do. It goes against everything TT has done in the past. And I'm glad. You need to get somebody at a more explosive position in the 1st round. If BPA outside of Ragland is either a DT like Billings or (somehow) an edge like Shaq Lawson, I think it's a no-brainer. No way do I think Lawson lasts that long though.

The more I think about it the more I'm thinking an edge guy. That'll be a major need in a year or so, and you usually need first round guys to get a difference maker.

Evan, I have the same thought, a feeling perhaps (and not necessarily an endorsement, as if TT needed one). Walter Football currently has Ragland going #19 to the Bills. They have Butler as GB's pick, with Kenny Clark going #43 overall to the Titans. The logic to a Ragland pick could be:

TT sees a roster without any glaring holes. In this situation, he has the luxury to address the biggest need with the BPA at that position. Thus, Ragland does not have to be a Luke Keuchley, and he does not have to be a three down player. He just needs to be in the top 1\3 to make the pick worthwhile.

My total bs guess of a mock draft. Rd.1 Butler... Rd. 2 Deion Jones.... Rd 3. Haeg or Random OL ...Rd 4a Josh Ferguson ...4b Cody Core...4c OL again Rd 5. Nick Kwiatkowski Rd 6...KJ Dillon ...Rd 7 Punter. .....Sorry I am not up to date on my OL and punters but it's fun to throw some names around either way. Happy draft day folks.

CBS disagrees. I liked his tape as a conversion to ILB, but there is a difference of opinion - I suppose TT's opinion is the only one that counts. [Edit for clarity - CBSsports wrote about Perry: "Although not elite in any one area on the field, Perry is very well-rounded with the scheme-diverse skill-set and coverage skills that will make him a fit for all 32 defenses."

If Ragland is there at 27, you have to know many of the teams ahead of GB that need an ILB didn't select him for a reason. I don't think he's a 3 down LB, but many draft pundits do.
So often pundits/experts say GB needs an ILB, there's Ragland...Boom great pick. I don't think TT sees it that way. That's why I think Butler is the pick if he's there. He's one of the bigger DTs in this years draft and has the speed and size to disrupt anywhere along the LOS. That's important for Green Bay's sub-packages that Capers run for most of the game. I believe that's why Billings won't be the player chosen (another match people love to put together, a true NT and Raji is gone) since he's a NT and not much else.
So I'm almost perfect in getting picks WRONG in the 1st round for GB....but I still think it's Butler or a trade down.

Raise your hand if you had Damarious Randall as our pick last year?

Raise your hands if you had Datone Jones and Nick Perry.....and Haha and Bulaga. Those teo slid way down, we didn't expect em to be available.

Perry was a questionable fit.

So forget about all the guys we have guessed, named, so far. If there's another WOW NO WAY pick from Teddy that nobody has predicted yet, who could it be?

Josh Doctson? He's similar to Michael Crabtree, but better in most areas. Would TT pull that trigger? Jordy is 30 this year.

Derrrick Henry? Doesn't seem to make sense. But what of TT has him graded as the clear BPA?

What we DO KNOW is that TT is not afraid to take a guy a round earlier than you or I, or Mel have them projected.

His first two picks ever for us:
Aaron Rodgers and Nick Collins.

It doesn't get any better than that folks.

One of the very few times I would recommend a trade down if possible. Good depth with little change and with an extra 4th (as example) it's a chance to get younger for less $$$

Ragland fits a need, but don't see him as anything other than a solid starter. Guess that's what comes with in drafting at the lower end of the draft.

(Trying not to think about the prospects) After looking over our roster (again) I came away really disappointed with our DT/DE group. I also don't know why some are listed as DT rather than DE and vice versa. I'm just curious.

D-Line (An injury to Daniels and our Def. is f*#ked)
O-Line (Injury...Age...Future)
LB (As much as we like Clay at ILB our Run Defense still ranked 12th worst in the league. Either a pass rusher or Run Stopper would help Clay and the Run/Pass Defense)

Needs addressing and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if TT goes with 1 or 2 of those positions within the first two rounds.

DL IMO is our biggest need. Losing Raji really hurt. Compound that with Pennel getting a 4 game suspension and Datone Jones playing more OLB/Elephant End, our DL is thin.

The strength of the draft is the DL. Thats why I expect them to go DL in the first round and probably again between rounds 2-4.

Packers need more help at LB. To me that is their 2nd need.

OL they need another good backup OT.

I wasn't putting them in any particular order. I was just making note as I was reviewing the roster.

As far as the O-Line, I think Tackle and Guard is in play. One can argue that the O-Line had a worse year than the WR corps based on pre season predictions. Not saying OL should be the first pick, but if the right player(s) fall -- I wouldn't be against it in Rounds 1 or 2.

Playing Devil's advocate here, knowing that the DL group is so rich why not hold off on getting 1 or 2 until Round 3 and beyond? What if Ragland and Jaylon Smith...or Noah Spence and Justin Simmons are available at our 1st and 2nd picks? Would you be okay with those two if we could scoop DJ Reader in the mid-rounds?

I've been saying the same thing - with how deep DL is, the value play would be to wait till the 2nd or 3rd to pick one and go with another position in the 1st.

@Evan Many weeks ago I started off that same way. But as soon as I started looking at film the stronger Draft Fever hit me. I wanted a DL -- hell, I wanted 2 of them within the first 3 rounds (lol). I don't know what I want now. There's so many ways to go with it. So many variables. I see why coaches and GMs go bald/grey. I'm just watching YouTube/DraftBreakDown videos and I've had enough (lol).

Yeah, since we are in talks about the draft, I am just saying what positions I think need more help.

I completely get that devil's advocate point of view. I agree with it. I'm just looking at the strength of the draft, and who will likely be available. Odds are that the best players on the board will be DL. And that is where their biggest need is right now.

I don't think they go Jaylon Smith in the first round. But today there is a lot of talk about Myles Jack dropping. That a lot of teams are now questioning him. If he fell to Green Bay, I would take him.

I heard another reason why early 2nd round teams may like to move up into the 1st to draft a QB. The 5th year option. That would allow teams 1 more year with the QB on a rookie contract if they draft them in the 1st then the 2nd.

Something to think about.

Looking at the teams that could possibly trade back into the first round.

Pick Team
32 Cleveland
34 Dallas
35 San Diego (maybe a stretch but I have been rumors, Rivers is 34)
37 San Fransisco

If Lynch goes in the top 20, then Hackenberg and Cook likely move into the back half of round 1. In that case, the Packers might move down.

The other scenario is that they move up to get...who knows. The first 4th round pick might be worth 3 or 4 spots.
