Bears Trade For Brandon Marshall

Bears Trade For Brandon Marshall

New Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emrey is wasting little time putting his stamp on the team.

From Jay Glazer:

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms of a trade w Miami for pro bowl WR Brandon Marshall in exchange for 2 third-rounders.

Marshall will reunite with quarterback Jay Cutler who he played with in Denver under coach Mike Shanahan.

The last time the Packers faced Marshall and the Dolphins, Marshall had a very good game against mostly Tramon Williams in coverage, though Williams did grab one interception on a comeback targeted at Marshall.

This also sets up an interesting dynamic with the Dolphins, with some observers speculating that Miami is clearing cap room for Peyton Manning and a roster spot for Reggie Wayne - which would leave one less spot for former Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn to end up in free agency.

Zoiks!

The division looks even stronger now. Marshall will thrive with Cutler. Better load up on DBs in the draft.

Wow. This is kind of a head-scratcher. Seems like the Bears got exceptional value here and that Miami rushed this one. They couldn't get more than two 3rds?

Nice move by the Bears (who still suck).

Cole O's picture

There's a rumor that manning doesn't like Marshall
Which could explain why they sold so low

Starry Barts's picture

Yeah... nothing the Bears do frightens me; but still that seems like good value.

May the crippling curse of windy city receivers begin draining the lifespirit of BM.

PackersRS's picture

The Bears' passing game is still limited to 3 step drops and screens.

BrianD's picture

Once the Bears decide Marshall doesn't fit their offensive scheme, they'll send him to Carolina for a 3rd round pick.

As a Packers fan, this sucks.

No longer do we have to just stop the run against Chicago. (Which BTW - we struggled at last year).

Damn.

PackersRS's picture

We held Mat Forte to 2 yards in the first game...

Bearmeat's picture

How about the last game? Not so good - and against a no name too.

Face it RS. The DL sucked last year - especially the last half of last year.

The whole D sucked last year. This is NOT good for GB. We're still better, but the gap just shrank considerably.

Fish/crane's picture

It was that Anti-Bounty program. Now that that is gone- the D will tackle.

PackersRS's picture

One bad game and one terrific game doesn't constitute a struggle, as far as I'm concerned. There's also the HUGE asterist that Pickett didn't play the second game.

That's not to say the D played well last year, or that it doesn't need to do much better.

But, when Pickett was with the team, we held the Bears to 2 rushing yards (okay, Cutler scrambled for some yards as well). Hardly a struggle.

Vincent Jackson going to Chicago scared me more, but this is still a nice move by them. Though, they are still the Bears so they'll find a way to screw it up, I'm sure.

And there goes Mike Neal...WTF!

BubbaOne's picture

If it's the 3rd round pick Dud Bears rec'd for Greg Olson the trade in essence is him and a 3rd for BM...doesn't seem so cheap. Dud Bears also added $9.3M to their cap # this year and $27.5M total for the 3 years left on his contract.
Maybe Miami is doing three things: jettisoning large contracts to start over, acquiring draft choices to facilitate it, allowing Philbin to
bring in his version of "Packer People". God knows BM doesn't qualify. BTW-I wonder what Forte will think of this if he doesn't get a new contract.

Aaaww Man, now Dane Sanzenbacher, Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, and Devin Hester wont get a chance to shine...

Exquisite.

IowaPackFan's picture

The only guy that I am worried about (aside from Marshall) is Earl Bennett. I don't even know if Knox will ever be the same after that back injury late last season, and Hester will never be a prime wideout.

I agree with Evan, Vincent Jackson scars me more. He has a ridiculous yards per catch. I ain't so fussed about Marshall, he is good and he will be teaming up with Cutler again but he has led the league in drops for the last four years with 51 and he is a head case. Why else would Miami get rid of him? This is why I love TT's philosophy, create a culture around your football team and don't upset the locker room.

Packer UK's picture

Bears are going for it. They just signed Jason Campbell. Are after Jaguars DE 8 sacks last year, and are also looking at the Hawks TE John Carlson.

FITZCORE1252's EVO's picture

Frightening.

FITZCORE1252's EVO's picture

Going after a Seattle cast-off TE? Hmmm, seems to me they had a BETTER TE than that... Until they TRADED him a year ago. Just goes to show that franchise has no foresight, no real direction. They should have realized Martz may be gone... And they may want to keep Olson around... Just in case they switch to an offense that actually works with their personnel.

Don Hutson's picture

A new agressive GM. That I guess goes with a bad-boy WR. Well Chicago is the town for it. Marshall certainly gave the Packer secondary more than it wanted to deal with the last time he came to Lambeau. Gotta get those tackleing drills in place. Life doesn't get easier, but Marshall may also be a time-bomb waiting to explode over the Loop. the problem is he'll need to do more than hit a woman to get into trouble in Chi-town. They're good at protecting their fellons.

FITZCORE1252's EVO's picture

Gotta wonder why two teams in his six years have allowed him to leave for relatively mediocre compensation, given his fantastic production. Is he really that douchey? All signs point to yes.

Pretty easy to find trouble in Chicago, and you know he likes to use his pimp-hand... Just sayin.

Incredible foresight, just had the location wrong...

Point Packer's picture

Nice. Another nut-ball locker room mess to screw up any chance the Bears have at success this year. With this idiot and Cutler you have two good guys to start your quack house. Not worried about this. It will implode.

joshywoshybigfatposhy's picture

are the bears going to win the superbowl this year? NO

does this further diminish their draft picks for the future? YES

is marshall an assclown me-first WR? YES

can i remember the last time a big-time free agent WR head-case acquisition paid huge dividends? NO

will the marshall plan II ultimately be a failure? IT IS DECIDEDLY SO.

joshywoshybigfatposhy's picture

i just read that marshall was diagnosed BPD.

that is no small thing. i take back the ass-clown statement. don't get me wrong, we're all responsible for our actions and all that, but i sincerely hope this guy gets proper treatment and sheds the nonsense of NFL WR life that will only make things harder. i doubt he will, and this recent news doesn't look promising:

http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/7695896/chicago-bears-brandon-...

getting drunk and punching women (allegedly) at clubs is not exactly the best path for someone with BPD.

if i can wish him bad luck on the field and good luck in life, that's what i'll do.
