Around the NFC North: Training Camp Edition
A look around the NFC North with a couple weeks of camp left.
By TimBackes

As the season gets closer to starting back up, it's time for us to get back into our looks around the NFC North each week.
Here's this week's preseason edition of Around the NFC North.
Chicago Bears
- The Bears had a scare Wednesday when running back David Montgomery was carted off the field with what appeared to be a serious injury. Intiail fears of a knee injury proved to be unfounded, but Montgomery did injure his groin and was in obvious pain. It's unclear at this point how long Montgomery will be out, but head coach Matt Nagy was "optimistic."
- According to Rotoworld, Nick Foles is "inches ahead" of Mitch Trubisky in the Bears' QB competition. Which... well... let's just say that doesn't exactly bode well for the Bears' quarterbacking in 2020.
- Matt Nagy says the Bears intend to keep two kickers this season, which is both a sign of their lack of faith in their kicking situation as well as the unusual steps teams are taking this year to safeguard themselves against COVID-19.
Detroit Lions
- While the Milwaukee Bucks will get the well-deserved credit for prompting the rest of the NBA and teams in other leagues to strike yesterday and potentially for the foreseeable future, the Detroit Lions took a stand of their own on Tuesday by canceling practice to show solidarity with the cause of racial justice.
- Over the weekend the Lions finally decided they would not allow fans at the stadium for the first two games at Ford Field. It's only a matter of time before teams or the NFL itself extend these protections for the rest of the season.
- There are a few tight position battles for the Lions, but wide receiver appears to be the one where there will be the toughest positions. Former Badger Quintez Cephus is likely to make the roster as the fourth receiver behind Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola. After that, it's anyone's guess. There are several players in contention as both receivers and special teams contributors. The Lions kept six receivers in 2018 and just five in 2019.
Minnesota Vikings
- Reports indicate rookie wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who many Packer fans were ogling during draft season, is having a fine camp. He's been getting reps both outside and in the slot and impressing coaches with his crisp route running. That being said, expectations have to be tempered for all rookies this season, in a year in which there was essentially no offseason work and no preseason games.
- The Arizona Cardinals' record-breaking signing of safety Budda Baker could affect the market for the Vikings after this year. They've got their star safety Anthony Harris on a one year deal at hte moment under the franchise tag. Now that the market has been set for safeties at a new high, the Vikings may find it difficult to retain Harris after this season is over, especially if the salary cap does lower next year to account for the losses in 2020.
- Former Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers is in his first season with the Vikings as a defensive assistant working with defensive backs. At 70, Capers is the oldest coach on the Vikings' staff, and he does offer some perspective into Packers players, but already Green Bay's roster looks very different than it did in Capers' final season in 2017. While you can expect the fact that Capers is now with Minnesota to be brought up during game days, don't expect him to have any real inside information that could manifest itself on Sundays. He is a sensible option as an experienced mentor to young players in what is a very unusual NFL season.

Well Deserved Credit? Try Breach of Contract. This is looking more and more like someone is trying to Incite Riots. Spite isn't Justice. Faith and Allegiance goes beyond sports. Even the idiots behind the guns. Love it or Leave it.

Yeah, why don't you leave it. North Korea doesn't have protests. I hear Russia is nice this time of year. And there is Iran if you like the hot weather but, remember, no beer.

2021 is going to be an interesting Offseason for Free Agency. That's for sure.
