Around the NFC North: 2023 Week 12

What's happening this week and next with the teams in the NFC North.

It was bizarro week in the NFC North. The Lions were upset in a game where they were the heavy favorites over the Packers and Packers fans had to spend Monday Night Football twisting their brains into knots rooting for the Bears.

Lions

The Lions succumbed to the Packers 29-22.

Game Notes

  • Never go full pumpkin. Thanks to plenty of garbage time, Jared Goff's surface-level stats look fine for this game. He had 332 yards, 7.5 YPA, 2 touchdowns, and he also gave away the game for the Lions with three costly fumbles.
  • The Lions' usual suspects, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, the Sun God, Sam LaPorta and Jameson Williams, all had productive games, it just happened to all be in garbage time because of the turnovers and because the defense is now certified horrific.
  • Someone named Jerry Jacobs led the team in solo tackles with seven. Turns out he is a corner. Another corner, Brian Branch who is at least mans the slot, led the team in total tackles with 8. I don't know what has to happen for two corners to lead your team in tackles while your first-round pick linebacker had just three, but it ain't good.
  • The Lions D also failed to get much tangible pressure on Love and had no sacks on the day, In the first match-up between these two teams, the Lions pressured Love relentlessly and protected Goff all night, in this game the reverse was true. I don't know if we can commit to saying the Packers' trench groups are now superior to the Lions', but they certainly looked that way this week.

Former Packers

  • Technically Patrick Taylor is a former and current Packer. He had 3 carries for 11 yards which was somehow not the worst yards per carry by a Packers running back on the day.

Next Week

The Lions look to get back on track against the Saints.

Vikings & Bears

This game was probably the worst game to watch of the season and

Game Notes

  • Talk about QBs turning into pumpkins. Media favorite Josh Dobbs and nobody's favorite Justin Fields both regressed in this game. Dobbs had a good few weeks before the Vikings choked against the Broncos last week and he was just bad in this game. At one point he was 16/25 for 99 yards with four picks. You'd think, "Geeze what a terrible performance, it couldn't get any worse," but then right after that he threw a ball out of bounds when Jordan Addison was open for a sure touchdown by about 7 yards. Fields, who has been bad for most of his career, had seemingly broken out with a more open offense but he did not look great for most of this game. He finally hit DJ Moore for a big play on the last drive of the game to set up the game-winning field goal. Many eye doctors are reportedly booked through the end of December as football watchers en masse called in an appointment because of the blood streaming out of their eyes after watching these two quarterbacks for three hours.
  • The Vikings proved in this game that you can throw four interceptions and still need just one touchdown drive to almost beat the Bears. The Vikings just don't have it. Any offense that makes you yearn for Kirk Cousins or that causes people to point out on Twitter that Brandon Powell (a journeyman wide receiver who has played for six teams in six season) is playing better than your first-round pick isn't going to get you far in the playoffs.
  • The Vikings' defense looked fine again. They had three sacks and forced three fumbles. It may not seem super impressive to hold the Bears to 12, but they are an NFL team and they just put up 26 on the Lions last week.
  • The Bears' defense probably played its best game of the season, they had four picks, eight total passes defensed, two sacks, and got the ball back to allow the final game-winning drive.

Former Packers

  • The Badgers Linebacker squad combined for just seven tackles this week, although TJ Edwards did have one of the four picks.

Next Week

The Bears mercifully have a bye and the Vikings take on the Raiders.

How bad are you if:

You are at home, playing a 3-7 team, and they turn the ball over 5 times and fail to score a TD.

And you still lose.???

You're right, the Vikings--Bears game was the worst game to watch...of a lifetime. The crowd was so quiet at times you could hear a pin drop.

If ever there was a game that both teams should take a loss for, that was it.

I enjoyed watching the Bears defense slap around the vikings and help make the Packers path to a potential wildcard spot slightly more attainable.

Side note: Is it just me or does Justin Fields have unusually wide-spaced eyes? At times, he looks a bit like an alien to me.

As ugly as the Vikes/Bears game was, every single Packer fan should be happy the
bears won.

I'm sure some are still celebrating the annihilation of the Lions (well deserved).

But lets put things in perspective a bit.

It was 4 weeks ago that some Packer fans were calling for the head of MLF, and Gute.
It was 4 weeks ago some fans wanted the Packers to tank the season and pick up a new premier QB.
It was 4 weeks ago that some Packer fans didn't see much good in their team.
Thumbs down if you'd like kids, but those are facts.

Fast forward 4 weeks and the Packers are the toast of the town, now i read about getting in the playoffs.
Some are talking the playoffs, even the (gulp) Super Bowl
Everyone's a hero, players, Gute, even Joe Barry.

As i mentioned before the Lions game, beating the Lions was possible, it is a week to week league.

Life is good for us Packer fans right now, and will be better if they beat the Chiefs at Lambeau .
If they beat the Chiefs, no telling what might happen.

Right now they have the 4th easiest remaining schedule in the league, and after the Chiefs game, probably the easiest.

Again, lets get to .500 by beating the Chiefs and see where we go.

To me...9 wins...is a win for the Packers this season.
Any more than that, well, even i may start chugging the kool aid....lol

On talk radio it's been discussed about the Packers signing Love long term around 50 million a year.
Anyone have any thoughts about that?

Here is my thoughts - to soon to, way to much! 2024 is the year were Packers finally clean up SC and then we can talk about sum of money to spend on the players (including QB)!

I strongly believe in Jordan Love to become another excellent QB for Packers for long time, but nobody knows what tomorrow is bringing. Now, so far so good. Constant improvement, better understanding opponents' D and using their weaknesses for your benefit. And his young team mates are also progressing and develops in the right direction.

Lot of money comes after you win something (division, play offs, conference, SB, MVP, All-pro etc.). Before that keep the wallet tightly closed...

I hope nobody gets signed to GB for over $20MM per year. Do you want to win, or do you want to hoard as much of the salary cap as the market will bear? Those are the choices, but you can't do both.

Plus, $20MM / yr is a LOT of money. To play a game. That you love.

Since'75,

I still do not think ML is a great coach. He has made multiple questionable decisions in games and made another one in the Lions game.

I do not care if the Packers make the playoffs. We need a solid LT, a good safety, and a solid RG. I would rather have a better draft pick.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This team is improving but we have no running game and the o-line is still a big issue. The good news is Jordan is improving as well as his WR's. Hopefully, that will continue.

As far as Gute and Barry. This does not change my opinion. Barry still needs to go after the season. This defense is ranked 18th overall. Not good enough. Gute still has not done a great job getting talent for this team. Go back and look at his draft picks and see how many are left on the team and how many are actual pro bowlers.

I just wanted to make it clear that my opinions have not changed and they will not. This team still has a lot of work to do and this front office needs a change.

Whiners gonna whine. What would it take for you to stop whining? Would making the playoffs with the lowest paid roster and youngest team in the nfl be sufficient?

jboss......It takes some intellect to pinpoint why they have the lowest payroll (- dead money) and why the offense is so inexperienced.

Why is that?
It isn't the coaches fault.
It isn't the players fault.

So who is left?
Management?
Bad drafting?
Bad salary cap management?
Bad personnel decisions?
God forbid we blame them......right?
They are beyond reproach!!
Accountable? Not on green and gold kool aid websites.
That's sacrilegious!!

Then we'll be accused of......whining...lol
Simply because....we can do our own thinking, drawing our own conclusions.

Read up on all the articles you can jboss.....take it easy, let someone else tell you what to think and do your thinking for you.

We can comment about the Lions game for another day or so but it's on to the Chiefs.

The Bearly/Viqueens game is worth no comment.

The Bears, on the road, turned it over five times and still won. I've never seen that. On cue, Minnesota has begun their annual fade and so the door to the playoffs is open for the Packers.

Six games remaining. Starting with the Chiefs, at home, with some extra rest/prep time. A chance to have a .500 record and 5 weaklings down the stretch. A really good chance to put some stuff together.

Thanks for the JL video. His passes are still not where they should be. At least half or more were behind the receiver. The deep pass to CW was short, if he leads him it is a TD. My take on this is that the receivers are improving in terms of knowing how JL throws behind. It’s clear that JL is getting more comfortable with his reads, he just needs to improve his accuracy. GPG!

I think it's more timing than accuracy... he gets that ball out to Watson half a second earlier and it's in the same spot with Watson running under it full steam.
