Are Packer Fans Online?

17 NFL Team's Websites & 3 Team Newspaper Sports sections have more web traffic than Packers.com, which is the highest trafficked "Green Bay Packer" website in the NFL category, according to Alexa.com.

I am a Packer Nerd. I help run a website devoted to Green Bay Packer Fans, so of course I check traffic on sites like Alexa & Compete. That is what is available to my current budget (ie. no budget) for research. Alexa posts web rankings based on it's traffic data (still under review & study for effectiveness) and they have sites listed similar to what you would find in the Open Directory Project. The difference is these sites are ordered by overall Internet Traffic Rank.

At least we beat the Jets at something.

So of course I go to this list:

And I find the most trafficked site is (duh) Packers.com. As it should be.

Where it gets sad is when you go to the Top NFL Sites:

Is this the same Green Bay Packers team that consistently ranks in the top echelons of the NFL when it comes to marketing and merchandising? All I can say is Packer Fans Worldwide need to get on this and rectify. I don't enjoy seeing the top trafficked NFL teams as Dallas, Philly & Pittsburgh.

a little sad that more packer fans aren't perusing the cyber world of cheese, however, i would probably guess that the majority of packer fans live in wisconsin, a state i wouldn't normally call "progressive and/or hip" - and...lambeau has been sold out for how many years? so people aren't going to packers.com for info on tickets...and...in wisco whenever there is packer news you better believe it is going to be on the 5pm, 6pm and 10pm news shows - so you don't have to look that far! but...those people are missing out on great sites like this one, and packers.com - which you can currently vote for your favorite plays of the year...a very nice feature they added last year. living in LA, i have to get my fix everyday so i'm all over the web. thanks for the great site cheeseheadtv!

I don't go to Packers.com because I get better info from other places.

The only reason I go to Packers.com is to look up stats and live shots of Lambeau Field.

It's not just packers.com. Packers.com happens to be the most trafficked Packer related site currently on the web. The list has 30 sites (including ours I might add) :)

but I see the point u may be making..there is a large diversity of places to get Packer news. But even with us Packers.com is a Hub. I guess I see the diversity of sites throughout the NFL.

So, what I wonder is how do RSS feeds affect this? Do they get counted? I seldom go to many websites any more since I get the majority of the new contacts in my feeds. How does this affect it?

Still, we have to up this number. After all, cowboys fans can't read and they are number one. What's up with that?

I assume the numbers don't include JSOnline or any other print media sites. I avoid them like the plague. My demographic falls well outside the heavy user category. It tool me a long time run across two sites, yours and packergeeks, that I like. And thanks to your commenters I'm beginning to find more. I've got to believe there are reasons other than information and intelligent discussion that are causing such a disparity.

I don't see it being site construction. Packers.com is as good as any other NFL site I've been to. Could it be ticket searches? Maybe team controversy? Packer.com reflects the tight control of the Packer Organization (i.e. no dirt). Site promotion? I guess there are a lot of questions. A more in-depth analysis may provide answers. Until then it's fun to speculate.

maybe since we have more forums then other team, we do not need to go to the official home page for information

but I never liked the page, little un friendly user wise

Philly I believe has been voted as one of the best web site for a while

The Packers don't want to use up any cap room to pay for a good marketing guy and an elite web designer for their web page. LOL

I go to Packers.com for historical information, and maybe to look at the roster from time to time, but that's about it. There are better sites out there for news, analysis, and commentary. I guess I'm just not that interested in what the site has to offer.

That said, I come here, DDD's site, and packergeeks (what, have those guys gone into hiding at a remote undisclosed location since Tuesday?) several times a day.

It's extremely difficult to get accurate tracking information for website traffic, especially for free.

Nick - Great point. The other thing I would love to be able to track/graph is like Top 30 sites Traffic of each team (Blogs, Forums, Main, News) as a block against the other 30- because you can see more of the big picture.

although I still say being anywhere within 30 for the packers organization is pretty bad...but I will concede that if you include all the pages (somehow?) generated BY Team. The packers would KICK every other teams ass. But then again..no way (yet) to prove.

How many non-Team-related FAN sites do the Eagles, or the Cowboys, have out there(?) That would be my question. da bears have sites like "Monsters of the Midway" .... but, I've never looked for independent fan sites on other teams all that much. If the 'boys don't really have sites like this one (or even IPB for that matter) then somehow that translates into more site activity because their fans aren't very creative (as a bottom line), correct? I would think that as a whole, when you combine all of the off(ad-hoc ?)sites and then add that stat with what amount of traffic Packers.com sees, I'm sure we top the List. Thye off site traffic I'm betting equals the number you see for Packers.com..... no?

It seems like there are a ton of Packer related websites, perhaps a greater number than there might be for other teams. (Glancing at the Alexa link you provided seems to support this theory.) I suppose this could spread the number of hits around.

And I agree on the point regarding the Journal-Sentinel, if their Packer blog isn't counted (and I'm assuming it's not). Given the number of (mostly inane) comments their blog postings get, I'd be highly surprised if they didn't get a ton of traffic.

Also, these listings seem to be based off of very recent data, thus the main Arizona online sportspage is 40th most popular NFL website. That obviously isn't happening if the Cards aren't in the Super Bowl. So I bet there's some correlation with the Packers having a down season, and the team website being lower in the ratings.
