Anthony Smith To Return To Green Bay

Free agent safety Anthony Smith tweeted that he will sign with Green Bay once the lockout ends.

Anthony Smith is a prolific tweeter. Engage him in a conversation and he's likely to reply; he's just that kind of person.

So when Packers blogger Zach Kruse (@zachkruse2) asked Smith about his NFL future, I was not surprised when the free agent safety was completely honest and candid in his response.

Kruse asked Smith if he is "worried about his free agent status," to which Smith replied, "I ain't a free agent I'm bavk (sic) n green back just can't sign until the cba is signed."

When pressed on the specifics of a potential deal with the Packers, Smith replied "don't know yet but ima finish out there prolly."

After being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2006 draft, the Steelers chose not to offer Smith a new contract after the 2008 season. Smith was signed by the Packers in 2009 but did not make the final roster cutdown prior to the season. After bouncing around between the St. Louis Rams and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Smith returned to the Packers via trade in 2010 where he was a member of a Super Bowl winning team for the second time in three years.

It would appear that Anthony Smith will return to Green Bay for the foreseeable future, and I would bet there are a few other Packers free agents who have similar deals in place once the lockout ends.

We have a ton of depth at that position. Collins and Burnett are lights out. Peprah is solid enough to start somewhere. So with Smith we'd be 4 deep.
Woody already plays a hybrid position.

So much for players and coaches/negotiators/etc not talking during the lockout, eh?

Good point, but there is the possibility that the two sides worked this out prior to the lockout knowing that they couldn't do anything until they knew the years required for restricted/unrestricted free agency.
